The most common mistakes new players make is to try to rush to deal as much damage as they can from the beginning.
For example, once I see moves like turn 1 Arcane Missiles I immediately know my opponent is new.Card advantage is very important in this game and you have to remember that you only have 30 cards. Treat each one valuably and try to get 2 for 1 (or more) card trades.
this. lol

to further clarify to newbies:
imagine delaying this arcane missle to say, turn 10.
10 mana right?
put an ogre magi, kobold +2 sp for 6 mana
assuming you cleared the board prior your turn, or maybe you can use your minion this very turn to finish off whatever that's left out/resummoned
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/177-frostbolt (3+2 = 5)
+

+
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/589-arcane-missiles (3+2 = 5, no longer random since you cleared board)
4 mana = total 10
all directly to the hero, suddenly you're dealing a total of 16 damage vs a measly 3 (assuming no minion if you're 2nd player)
if you already had done 14 dmg to enemy hero prior to turn 10, grats you just won the game
