Placed an order for the Audio-Gd ROC balanced headamp and the DAC-19DSP1 for the HD800. Since it will will arrive before my friend is back, I will be able to test them out on my headphones.
Now that I got a chance to hear the HD800 is I am wondering now the effect of replacement cables on the HD800. This was because having listened to the HD800 and its timbral presentation of instruments (which is very true and realistic), I I switched to the HD600 with its DHC cable and found its sonic image brighter, almost edgy. Switching to the Cardas cable seem to have a more a more balanced sonic picture now. I remember reading that someone compared the Stefan Equinox on the HD600 compared to the Cardas and found the Cardas to be better and synergises well with the HD600. In contrast, the Cardas didnt go well with the HD650, and the DHC type of cables are better suited for the HD650. Maybe it's because the HD650 has a slightly darker sonic signature. There's been much discussion about the HD600 and the HD650 with the HD600 being more balanced and neutral while the HD650 is more musical. So it didnt seem appropriate to lump the HD600 with the HD650 isn't it?
I also tried out the aftermarket on the HD25-13 and found them balancing the treble and the bass now instead of being more bass heavy on the stock cable.
Anyway, I'm rambling and OTT...
I guess I could get a clearer picture once the Audio-Gd stuff arrives....can test kao-kao...
Was about to order the DHC Clone cable for the HD800 but this aspect of changing the sonic image of the headphones seems to make me think if it is a good synergy. I read lots of reviews saying the DHC makes the HD800 clearer.
So anyway, maybe Sep90 can comment about the HD800 with a replacement cable?

Does it brighten up as in sharper treble or does it make the HD800 clearer? On the stock cable, while it sounded good, I detect a slight sibilance in the treble and lighter bass compare to the HD600 and HD25. (

how can I compare HD800 with the rest LOL

)
actually i agree with u bout the cardas cable ...i was using it to test my hd650 but it doesnt match my hd650....other way around it giving me slightly deeper bass with hd600 and spectrum is push at the center....hd650 still have the dark signature but cardas is not getting rid of the veil taste which all of us hated it
however if u put the price of cardas cable with Stefan Equinox together , i will take the equinox cos it's match perfectly with either of my hd600 and hd650....the reason is it is neutral, brighter and prat is slightly better than cardas...listening to Hotel California, Michael Jackson Beat It and Jazz managed to maintain the upper frequency that hd650 tends to rolls off (guitars double strings, and Drum rolls, etc,)
anyway, are u sure that u getting the hd800? if yes, then u should get the Phoenix for it....Roc may sound similar but since it about 100 to 200 extra i think the phoenix performs much more better for it's value
the reason is the phoenix has separate power supply which negate completely on EMI/RF inteference and hd800 will perform according to source and amp counterpart..
i think u after spending some time with hd800, the hd800 soundsignature is very clinical and unforgiven + the treble is very very sharp to u cos it's depends on types of recording (good or bad the hd800 will definetly reveal everything in it's path) + the stock cables r silver plated copper (spc) cables which contributes the edginess and sibliance highs...
the only thing u can do is get a better cable to tame down the treble and giving it more punchy bass on lower end.
phoenix is better suited for hd800 cos of dark signature and smooth background and no noise level/humming effect
the cable for hd800 is depends variely on yur type of signature....most ppl who personally know methat i love upper frequency/upper bass which has very airy presentation and have a wide space between instruments and placing
mids is the most important part for me..must not be too syruply or thick or u loses out the rest of low bass and details and not so dry u will get tired when listening to it...must be perfectly balanced or tonally right in audiophile terms
bass i think most ppl know me would refer me as a basshead..lol but i think pcworks, akabane, theng ye, enigmatic, and rest of the gangs knows me well which type of bass i going for....deep, punchy, articulate and fast bass...my oyaides/arcolinks/blacksands/crystal cables showed me different types of bass which i deeply craved for...
not the least, if u like hd800 bright soundsignature, then get the DHC 7n silver cable or silver/gold mundolf....
if u like the hd650 type of warm, bassy and fun type then get the OCC copper for it.....
silver will give more cleaner, smoother and wider soundstage/tighter bass but may be bright or clinical to some ppl
copper will give more intimate warm, smoother low end and not so sharp trebles but loses out some of the transparency
