No, system file takes around 1GB only, this is because we use different calculation method when we talk about file size, one is decimal standard which measures a GB as a literal billion bytes (1,000,000,000). (16GB=16,000,000,000/32BG=32,000,000,000). Another one is binary which doesn't measure it that way. Binary measures in 1024 (1KB=1024bytes/1MB=1024KB/1GB=1024MB). In OS, it measures in binary standard. So you do the math and you should be able to get the result in binary standard.

Since TWRP didn't flash the zip for you, so you can just download the OTA zip file and flash in TWRP, after this flash the SMS fix, it has been updated to 4.4.2 version.

What error message? System file verification failed?

Try using CWM then, TWRP is having issues with 4.4 rom, or use toolkit to sideload, toolkit will boot back stock recovery before sideloading the OTA zip.

Yes, I find that touch screen is more responsive when there is no screen protector applied on it, less ghost touch too.

Edit: It's not GEL bugs, you need to update to latest Google Search version(3.1.24.941712) which contains the landscape icons overlapping bug fixes.
