Bro, i have no doubt that the camera of the HTC One wins in low light IF it functions correctly. I am unhappy cause mine doesn't.

Call me butthurt la, I admit.  cry.gif

I feel u bro. cuz it's kinda annoying at times... but what to do? cry.gif Lets hope for a software fix. I realise that the algorithms in their image processing makes the image turning purplish hue when taking black subject. Even with adequate lighting...

TL;DR its not a manufacturing defect, more likely a defective design

All CMOS sensors will behave this way. Sensitivity to blue/purple is always higher than other colours as blue/purple photons have higher energy per photon (ask your Physics teacher why. If he/she cannot answer ask him/her go back to university).

After that, its a combination of both hardware and software. Its not a fault as in broken stuff, but more of a hardware design issue. Firstly, the front-end gain is high, therefore the noise, in this case blue channel noise, gets amplified.

Next is the software. By right good DSP should tame this aggressive gain and return the blue channel back to reasonable levels. The aggressive nature of this again due to HTC engineers needing to deliver on a promise of great lowlight sensitivity, is the cause of this purplish tint.

In this case, its a mix of both hardware and software design issue. Its not a device failure or out of spec because the specs were specified so by HTC, though it may appear to be a defect. The sensitivity of each individual sensor will be different, and will have slightly different noise floor levels due to the nature of mass production. Thats why some of you sent into warranty and got back a less purple camera module. But this is entirely random, as evidenced by those who claimed warranty, had it replaced, and still have purple.

In any case if there is a defect, it is a defect in HTCs specifications, and a defect in both hardware and software design.
