My current set-up consists of 5 units of Synology old models for media consumption.

DS1010+ @ TV Series (1080P)
DS410J @ ANIME & CARTOON (720P below)
DS411J @ TV Series (720P below)
DS213J @ P0rn
DS411J @ TV Series (720P below)

Total for all? 40TB capacity.

All the above were bought used or given away by friends. If I have at least 20K cash then can really upgrade to a better Synology with at least 100TB or higher.

exactly. so shud i just deactivate it first before plug into the other NAS ? Its taking upto 24 hours to repair (from 4TB to 8TB). i still have another 4TB hdd to go. guess i need to deactivate first ? can I deactivate and format the NAS HDD before unplug ?

iI would suggest to allow the repair to settle first before doing anything.
What's your rush?

in my experience, the NAS still usable during the repair process

Guys I tried to use Xpenology on my old HP PC core i3 (2017) and 4gb ram.. someone get stuck and can't seem to load the DSM ; likely the USB stick is not compatible

Anyway I need a Synology NAS ; mainly or only using to backup Google photos. I need the AI recognition and metadata manager

Which model should I consider .. is 2x4tb sufficient?
*
AI recognition by Synology photos is pretty 'meh'
Do more research if that is your main usage for getting the NAS

I'm currently running the following NAS at home. All are located on an IKEA Hejne rack.

DS-410J X 2 units
DS-411J
DS-213J
DS-216J
DS-1010+

Each with 2TB drives. Why? Because 2TB was cheap and plenty in the used market especially for Enterprise or Black drives. I usually buy those with less than 40000 hours.

About a week ago, I found a DS-2411+ for cheap and decided to get it. It was old but perfect for my home office and a chance to consolidate and retire the old J units.

I loaded 10 drives of 2TB as 1 storage pool and another 2 more 2TB drives as Hot Spare. No need to worry about pool degradation as the unit will recover itself automatically.

Today, I'm retiring the following.

DS-213J X 1 unit
DS-216J X 1 unit
DS-410J X 2 units

The DS-411J will continue to serve as my temporary storage during the migration period and the DS-1010+ will remain as my TV series storage.

Once all is done, I will put these up for sale at Carousell.

I am aware of serverpartdeals but the customs tax and shipping could be high. I bought 6x 18TB seagate Exos X18 a year+ ago from Taobao, back then no but even with 10% it's not that bad. The drives are refurbished or from data center as well, zero hours (probably wiped) but they were < 1 year old.

All 6 drives are still working fine today. However it was a gamble, also worried that I get DOA drives. Shipping HDD back to China is close to impossible so you weigh your risks.

Has anyone here using the 2.5G/5G dongle 'hack' for their Syno NAS?
Which brand of adapter is available to purchase here in MY?

well the nas booted up and running truenas. now just restoring datasets from backup right now :}

well i'm using a 15U rack, it fits all my switches and the 4u rack in it. As for the OLD tower nas, putting that on an ikea box shelf along with the rest of my collection. Thinking of replacing that with a sturdier metallic shelf.

if you check shopee they got 15u open rack. for homelab this size is good for most builds. But i would recommend navepoint 12u or 18u open rack

but i didn't see any local stock, but you can't go wrong with this one. it's depth adjustable (which you would need if later you want to use rails for something like the 4u nas case i got) smile.gif
well nothing wrong with going desktop pc case. as long as it can fit ur drives, the motherboard psu etc... thats really all u need  smile.gif
