it happen once before but i forget is hdd1 or hdd2. i diagnose repair and turn off beep and it last quite a while. now it beep again and it show hdd1 i dont remember is it the same or different hdd. i turn off the beep already. but few days later it beep again.
i try diagnose once. but cant remember is it the same hdd or not. this time it cant diagnose and repair. it shows need replace hdd. hdd degraded. sad.gif

btw im using 2tb x 2 now running the synology hybrid. if i buy a new hdd which is bigger in size lets say a 3tb or 4tb or 5tb it shouldnt be an issue right? i can just remove degraded hdd and plug in new hdd and repair it correct? sorry im new in NAS. reading the FAQ in synology it says can. but i dont understand on how the space is being divided. does it means now i can store larger capacity?

You can just plug in and select something in the setting to generate back the data.

You can put larger hdd size. But you won't get the extra space. If your existing hdd is 2tb, plug in new 3tb hdd, you only get 2tb from the 3tb hdd.

If a hdd in Nas is degraded status, when we rma it, is it possible the data be retrieved by the manufacturer?

Rather if we keep biz info on the Nas, and there is a need to rma 1 of the hdd (raid5) is there risk of losing info to 3rd party?

The data need to be in raid in order to read it. Without another 3pcs hdd, the data in the hdd is useless.

Or you can plug into any pc as 2nd hdd and wipe it out the data.

This is the following case of my Synology DS1815+ NAS. The story is ontop.

Today I get back the NAS. They exchange a new for me.

After I write a complain to the HQ, they request me to RMA to them or RMA to the local distributor. So I send it back to the local side.

The tech guy told me this model have a lot of complain. Not unusual.

Between a week, get a replacement. My 3 yrs warranty is almost expired. Hopefully it can last long.

Put back all HDD and fired up. Reconnect back, link back the DDNS and update the ver. Everything work find now.

Tht is a nice and quick solution.
Local guys are at amoda building right?

I had request for hdd tray replacements as the latch is always broken. (ds1515) Hq in Taiwan send directly to KL via courier.

Brought from subang jaya. Their SC at USJ.

When I return the spoil NAS, tray, cord etc didn't included. Cause lazy to take out the tray from the HDD.

They exchange the new 1 with everything. Now I have 8pcs spare tray. biggrin.gif

My current NAS is a Synology DS212j, and although it works well, the interface is incredibly slow and there are less updates for it. I just use it for the occasional torrent, where I have a browser plugin to right-click and send the download task to the NAS. Also do an auto backup of the important documents from my work (using Cloud Station Backup on the PC), which is then also backed up to the cloud. (Using Cloud Sync on the NAS) I am quite happy with the data redundancy since the NAS is also using SHR mirrored. Meaning I have a data copy on my PC, one on each NAS HDD, and one in the cloud, and is accessible when I am out and about.

may I pick your mind on this back up.
While I understand for mirror in NAS/PC, how do you sync the files in PC>NAS>Cloud?
Does this mean all the files (in 3 locations) are the same all the time?

Can, I'll try to explain what I have done...

On my PC I have installed Cloud Station Backup. This app always runs and monitors the folder "My Documents" only. Whenever I create a new document, or update one, or save anything to "My Documents", the app copies it to the NAS. NAS username and password has to be saved in the app.

On the NAS I have installed Cloud Sync. Cloud Sync is also monitoring the specific folder that I backup the PC files to, and it will backup to the cloud when there are changes to this folder. Cloud username and password has to be saved in the app, in my case it is to Google Drive.

There is another way to do this, which is called Synology Snapshot, where the NAS keeps previous versions of your files. This might save your ass if you ever get ransomware and all your files are encrypted, as it allows you to recover files from their previous state (...before encryption) I am thinking to use this method too, that's why looking to do an upgrade to the NAS.

So, right now this is the way I do it. If I'm up and about, and have to refer to an invoice, for example, I can log directly into the NAS using DS File, or can just check on Google Drive. The files are the same in all 3 locations, and are the latest ones. But the "master" copy is on the PC, and all others follow that one.
*
Thanks! noted on the master copy being the one on the PC HDD
So anything modified on the master will be reflected to the others...

but what if NAS files were modified instead(or files other than the master', what effect will that cause to the set of data?

just installed PiHole as per https://mariushosting.com/how-to-install-pi...r-synology-nas/

as per advice it is best to hv the router use PiHole as the DNS so all the devices connected to the router will hv adblock
did that via https://ali-bahrami.medium.com/home-network...rs-d2393299ef7f

end up my UnifiTV box unable to connect
anyone with UnifiTV can assist?

tq

i guess I managed to get things working
was missing a router reboot after keying in all the numbers sweat.gif
tq all

will monitor fer a few days to see if can feel the benefits

@stormer.lyn
Noted on the backups, my main storage would be my digital photos
so if the master files corrupt, it will affect the rest? am I understanding it correctly?
Your syncing is done weekly? or more frequent?

I already vacuum the NAS and its connector, first drive only detected I/O error and bad sector when running data scrubbing, I plugged it to PC and executed extended smart test with Western D Dashboard but didnt found any problem.

For the second RMA drive, it is indeed a defective drive as the western D dashboard showed "poor" status, extended smart test cant be executed due to error code 4.

It is western D drive for NAS, however the drives I got from RMA are not with RED label.

recertified/refurbished drive don't hv red labels if not mistaken
