Do you have experience in IT or some sort NAS?

You might want to consider the cloud 1st.

Takecare the NAS is not easy. Security data and hardware require some experience.

Minimum experience should be ok I guess.

If you take care the NAS, you have to responsible for the data security. Not easy task.

From my experience of information for the NAS disaster,

1) the NAS Synology get hack and kena ramson ware. The company is near my home. All the data gone as the boss don’t want pay.
2) A LY guy here house get break in. Took away the Synology NAS. All gone.

How the 365 prevent ransomware ?

Last month my house have this TNB irregular electric voltage incoming. It comes down as low as 140v and goes up back to 220v (still low).

It detects by my UPS which keeps on switching to the backup battery and normal mode. But I thought it was the UPS or battery got problem. The irregular voltage also detects by the flurosent light and the fan speed.

Switch off the UPS and the NAS. ON back later the UPS but immediately smoke coming out. My UPS gone. The NAS remain OFF for few more days as I order a new UPS.

TNB solves the voltage problem later on.

After getting a new UPS and connecting back everything, the NAS cannot be ON.

So I change the battery in the NAS. Same problem. This time suspects the PS problem. Order a new PS and install it back. NAS can power ON again.

Then check inside the data. HDD has an error. The Backup folder is missing. (which is important) So repair the HDD and back to normal. Check upon check, the backup folder when into encryption. Which I didn't have or set into encryption anything. Lucky I able to use password to unlock it. (don't no where the heck password come from)

1 hell of the problem solve by the TNB problem.

The thing I cannot understand is, the NAS PS rating at 110v -240v, but spoil also. The NAS power OFF as normal. (not immediately power gone) But effect data inside change. (Maybe because of battery change?)

Another lesson learn from this, get a UPS that has an Auto voltage regulator. To prevent such problems. I m using APC Pro 650 now.

New UPS

I think the old UPS doesn't have AVR. The UPS is over 12yrs old. The new UPS has AVR that can adjust 3 type of voltage sensitivity. But I think the range is still too wide.

The UPS has surge protector built in. And additional surge protector at the wall socket before UPS. So I don't think it is a surge. I have experienced a lightning surge through the network cable which spoils my NAS. The NAS cannot be repaired and I give to a member here.

Actually, I don't know there is an encryption future in the NAS. Till I experience the folder lock. And I don't have the password either. I tried all my passwords that I know but fail to unlock them. Last just try my luck with 1-8 passwords. And it unlocks!

Yesterday suddenly another problem came out. Fan 2 has a beep fault. But the fan is running fine. I need to further test it later by swap the fan.



Additional the NAS is protected by 2set of network surge protector.

Compare to previous WD red, Ironwollf is abit noisy.

But if just 2HDD NAS, that not so notice.

Ironwolf 16TB drop to about RM1k from Amazon. Cheaper a lot now.

I don't care about the warranty. Take the risk.

It has been running for 3yrs now.

Over my 15yrs experience in NAS, SS is more reliable as is running at lower speed 5400rpm. Now using Seagate and WD is the shorter life.
But talk long time storage, hdd still better many others.

Last week update to DSM 7.1.1-42962.

Regret. Damn, I have to learn the Synology Photo again. And rearrange all the photo.

Previous is still DSM 6.2. I reluctant to change is because worry about the Photo and movie. I have ton's of it in the NAS.

It is not about the look. But the folder and file arrangement is according to my way with the older ver.

With DSM 7.1.1-42962, all change. The way pic arrange and album is different and present on the site.

Family and friend sharing had to setup again and I lost. I got to teach them again how to use. And they are not all in Malaysia.

That's why I m regret to update.

Now I m rushing to learn and organise some new photos into the NAS. Tomorrow got to teach a group of friends how to use and upload their photos. Farking hell.
