Guys,

Last week i bought this model without researching further because they offer me free gifts and discount (mum and sister keep making noise making me cant think logically)\

The picture quality and everything seems good in my eyes and i just trust my instinct.

There is no review on internet however i saw W802A review and the spec seems to be similar.

Is this model KDL55W804A good ?

Thanks.

I think the W804A is a good deal. It's 1080p HD, uses passive 3D (no flickering on sensitive eyes compared to active 3D) and supports DVB-T2, which is the Digital TV system RTM and Media Prima will be migrating to in the future. And the demo set I saw at Sony showroom at The Curve has no lag on a PS3 (comparatively, my LG has small almost unnoticable lag on PS3 but horrible lag on Wii and other analog input console).

I'm planning to get one once my aunt is forced to upgrade to B.yond and I dump that LG in her house.

Ya but the 55" Triluminos 9xx series cost almost 3 times more, worth the price dif? Have not had the chance to compare the difference.

Seriously tho, if the 804 came in 60" i would have grabbed it, Im happy with the pq and features

I suggest that if you play retro games a lot, particularly pre-HDMI consoles like NES/SNES/Wii/MegaDrive/Saturn/Dreamcast/PS1/PS2/XBox, check the set completely first. LG TVs are very well known for their lag especially on analog input. Don't trust the salesperson, personally take a console to the shop and test. I made the mistake of trusting the salesperson's word with my LG. Big mistake.

Maybe victim of older Sony TV self destruct after just few weeks? Remember that some Sony TVs released a year or two ago commit harakiri just after a few weeks due to bug in firmware...

Speaking of which, I hope that doesn't happen with the W804. I'd prefer getting a Sharp, but 1. Sharp don't have Passive 3D set (I don't like active 3D- again bad experience from demo unit at Sony Center where the salesperson handed me 3D glasses to demo but forgot to charge the thing) and 2. Sharp currently don't have any DVB-T2 ready TV in the market.

Experience with the glasses made me wonder what will happen if they run out of battery in the middle of an intense PS3 WipeOut HD Fury session...

I think it is overpriced. Not that it is a horrible TV, but for how much you pay for it... there are better models out there.

While blacks on the W804 is decent (you have to activate Adv. Contrast though), it does crush shadow detail if you put Gamma at -2. Unfortunately, having Gamma at anyhting higher than -1 would make the TV too washed out, no matter what your contrast on brightness settings are.

Color accuracy is poor on the W804, especially blue levels. Enabling the Clear White helps a little bit but you will have to offset the Red and Green bias a little bit so that you still keep proper greyscales.

In terms of input lag, the W804 is amazing if you play games. Meassured around 16ms with a Leo Bodnar lag tester device. I usually think passive 3D is stupid (as is 3D entirely), so I'm not going to comment on this one.

So once again, the W804 isn't really a bad TV but just decent enough. Just that paying over RM3k (I don't know how much of a discount you got, but I assume the total price is still at least RM3k) for the TV isn't a good deal.

sharp is abit slow in new tech due to its financial issue to it main company, so u wont get da latest tech from sharp. unless sharp has more big investor for its coming capital...

And while I do that people beat me senseless and I lose the game? shakehead.gif

Don't get me wrong- I like Sharp. I just don't like Active 3D for several reasons (fear of battery running out in the middle of an intense gaming session and I waste precious time in swapping glasses, and I can actually see the flickering caused by the glasses' shutters). In fact, I strongly believe autostereoscopic 3D (glassless 3D- which ironically, Sharp invented but almost never capitalize on outside of licensing it to third party) is the future...

as what i know da latest model of active 3d spec from samsung, according to da salesman claims tat he is also has da same item, can use it continuously for 7 hours. so i'm not sure about other models...

& 1 thing i can confirm, i like sharp picture quality, but da it is lack of latest tech, so i hav forced to turn 2 korea brand, which is samsung & lg.

but, when u hav astro sd or astro beyond, samsung f8000 has da best picture quality among all, if u dont believe, u can always go to ss2 happy household retails to hav a good look, there has afew leds tat is showing astro daily.

just share my experience on 47W804A

After spend some time on the color setting, finally almost find the best match to my eyes. Really need to find best match for ASTRO hd & sd, becoz when i follow HD, the SD not good enough, so need to find in between.

Tested astro HD, pendrive FHD movie ( via sony S4100 player ). So far so good.

Loved the build-in wifi, also tested linked the youtube from my android phone. Now still no time to test other sony apps becoz i'm using sony phone.

also done the manually firmware update. Got it from sony website.

A plasma, specifically a Samsung PS51F5500 for RM3.2k. Has everything the Sony W804 has but just leaps better.

Better blacks, way better color accuracy, handles motion better, a more robust Smart TV option (this though doesn't mean anything if you're using a HTPC or a media player with XBMC of course), has 3D as well (bleh), and just downright better picture quality with a lot more options to really calibrate the TV unlike the W804's fairly limited options.

About the only thing the W804 does better is lower input lag, lower power consumption and it handles bright rooms better (as is with all LCD TVs).

i know u will gonna said tat, but for me, a 100% for me as 'NO' to plasma. 1st, sorry but no offense tat, i will banned plasma, bcoz i will not pay more electrical bills to tnb as bills increase almost every yr, unless i hav a rich dad or mayb my boss pay me doubles monthly, so plasma is out of my options. 2nd, heat is almost double or triple than a led can produce. for a little small house with no air con living hall, plasma is totally out of my expectation, not even just plain lcd like those old days big ass lcd. 3rd, black levels is always mention lcd & plasma forum, but in actual life, for a normal guy with just a small house, no theater room, i would not prefer plasma bcoz it needs a dark environment to expand its pros rather than cons, if a plasma put in my house living hall, i can tell da living hall will be 'HOT AIR-CON' once da tv is switch on after 5 minutes. lastly, from tv viewing distance from tv to my sofa is just bout 5feet max.

Well, I wouldn't know the variable circumstances you are facing in your own stead because you didn't mention it. The question from you was which TV between RM3k - RM4k would I pick.
No offense taken of course, no worries. smile.gif

dual play means 2 players can play games on da same screen with fullscreen on, unlike those days 2 players share half screen on da same tv...

i'm thinking of getting the 55" LA6200. this is much cheaper than getting the sony W706 or W804 series.

i tested the LA7400 series before, which is using 200Hz panel instead of LA6200 (100Hz).
to my opinion, the LA6200 behaves more like sony W706 while the LA7400 suits well with W804.
but i failed to notice any difference during the 3D conversion with trumotion/motionflowXR onboard.

totally agree.

but what i meant was the TruMotion and MotionFlow XR which many reviews suggest to enable them when watching 3D content.
since the (in LG case) TruMotion for 6200 is 100 while the upper 7400 is 200, i still cannot differentiate them.
maybe need to take a better look later side by side.

if u put it side by side (left 6200 & right is 7400), u will feel tat da left side abit jurky & da rite side abit smooth in motion like ppl moving, text moving & etc... tats all depends on how fast your eyes scan ps... my eyes abit sensitive eventhough i'm 4 eyes... jugger is noticeable on 6200 but still alot better than those 50hz tv & 600hz plasma, 7400 is much better & of coz 8600 & 9600 play smooth in fast action movie...

Passive 3D is Not a Stupid thing !!! Actually it is better than Active 3D because Passive 3D is brighter due using Non Powered Shutter Glasses like
in the case of Active 3D. Anyway, as what the Expert in Internet Web said " The present 3D Technology is still NOT REFINED yet ! Nevertheless,
PASSIVE 3D doesn,t cause Fatigue watching espesially long long Movies.....(Sources are all from Internet Expert......)

Therefore in my eyes, 3D all together is a stupid thing. I meant no offense to 3D lovers, I respect the fact that you like 3D.
But 3D is still stupid to me, at this point in time.

i downloaded 1 3D movie in MKV format. It's not playing thru TV USB, or S4100 player. ( i know, they are not support )

Then i try my media player, which is support MKV, but it's only playing 3 second, then it's stop. It that because of the HDMI cable must use v1.4? Or the media player also need to support 3D?
but my computer can play the file without any problem ( of course no 3D, it's split to 2 side by side ). So the file no problem.

SSBen,
I am NOT saying I like watching 3D....I was replying to your comment on saying " Passive 3D is a stupid thing " .....Actually Passive 3D
and Active 3D all have the Pros and Cons. But at this time, all 3D Technology on TV is still at its " Infancy " stage. We will have to wait maybe
another Two to Four years before the Picture is as Good as a Normal 2D. I like watching Tv on the normal 2D mode.....

Yes Alex, But at present, a TV set is manufactured on one 3D Mode. That is either Passive 3D or Active 3D. Active 3D works on the principle of
opening and closing of Battery Powered glass Shutter which is why Active 3D permit less Light to pass through and hence, the picture is not as
bright as Passive 3D. While the Passive 3D uses normal Unpowered Glass and permit all the lights available and picture is brighter.(better)
The Expert recommend Passive 3D at this stage because although there are " lines " in the picture, it doesnt cause Fatigue watching especially
long Movies.

Your room is 8 feet from wall to wall or you're gonna sit 8 feet away from the TV? There's a difference.

If you just use 1080p sources, then 55" is... well, barely fine. Play 720p or worse, SD content and you'll see the darkside of upscaling.
So if I were you, honestly no deal. A 46" would be a better bet.

I was feeling a bit generous when I typed that...

I'm not really sure about the refresh rate, will check tonight (although I'm pretty sure it does 24fps 3D at 1080p, meaning at least 48Hz at 1080p)

Wow... that far, even SD would look like HD. It'll be extremely hard to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p too.

Just saw one today displaying a football game.

Colours are all good but I saw the movement of the ball is not smooth.

When the players passes the ball... you can clearly see a trail behind the ball when it moves forward.

Don't know it's bad video source or refresh rate thingy.

Currently considering this Sony model and Samsung 55 inch 7100 model.

Which of these 2 is more suitable for gaming?

Not an expert in LCD LED TV.

if i were u, i will pick sony bcoz of the price & same brand of ps3, so definitely no problem compatible with it. as for samsung, the contrast & brightness is high, but its pricey & not worth the money unless u dont mind spending more into the same size of tv...

if ure a sony fanboy, sony ps3 of coz will b 1 of your favourite... so sony brand tv i will only recommend w804... bcoz if u wanna 3d, a passive 3d will b better than active 3d due to less torture like flickling left rite...

if ure a sony fanboy, sony ps3 of coz will b 1 of your favourite... so sony brand tv i will only recommend w804... bcoz if u wanna 3d, a passive 3d will b better than active 3d due to less torture like flickling left rite...

804A is highly recommended for PS3 Gaming and I find that the setting for under gaming Standard is suitable for battlefield4 and from cnet and most TV forums recommends the us version of 804a which is 802a this for PS3 because of its input lag especially first person shooters...

As for the trail on the football you need to set that particular channel to sports mode or motion flow which is normally off and a native to LED's.

A big Plus for its passive 3d and IPS screen ..too and great screen mirroring with my note 3 and DLNA connection to my laptop as the media server.

and for those of you who hooks up to PS3 and find that with the PS3 on and you can't get the options to pop up to change the picture settings which I had

Go to Settings/Home and I believe its under general TURN OFF THE BRAVIA SYNC settings to OFF!!!
was driving me crazy trying to resolve this untill the merchandiser in SENQ resolved it for me....

Kudos

Found W904A but not W954A.

I really like the colours of W904A but dont know if it's good for gaming. Not sure about the input lag for W904A.

Definitely a good LED tv for movies.

Should I go for 55 inch W804A or 46 inch W904A?

Which is why I asked if the W 8 04 can support them. I know they use passive glasses, but I don't know if the passive glasses which are sold at cinemas (occasionally, Cineleisure) are compatible.

if u watch normal 3d (not imax 3d) in cinema, u can use your passive 3d glass there bcoz there use the samethibf there as well. but in imax 3d, the passive glass is abit different, u can check & bring in your 3d glass to imax cinema, compare the lense & u will notice something.

Just bought Sony 55W804A!

I'm impress with the 3D. Haha.

Btw... What's your gaming mode setting?

Mind to share?

Only HDMI 2 will auto detect ps4 or all of them will be auto detection? Because when I connect my ps3 into HDMI 1 or 3 (Can't remember) and then do setting... there are no game mode but when I connect my ps4 into HDMI 2 and entered setting on the tv... it shown im running game mode.

Still new to this tech..... last time was more straigth forward.. haha

Hi,

Just bought my 55W804A from SQ last Friday, offer at RM4849, without any extra free gift.
Was thinking hard earlier whether to buy LG LA7600(with many good features as well) but finally decided on Sony w804A when the price drop from RM5999 to current level.

Anyway have no time to really enjoy it yet. Only try on Astro programs so far, SD channels pq not good as expected but happy with the HD channels especially the movies. Also try the simulate 3D and quite happy with it. Not trying on any real 3D source yet as I do not have 3D blue ray player.

Looking forwards for any tips from you guys here on how to optimize all the features and make full use of it!

Like I said, I've seen Transformer 3D Imax at Time Square... The 3D wont go popping out like what I wanted it...

It's just like the W804A... Just in layers... Maybe my eyes got problem... Even that dude in the movie holding 2 guns in his hands doesn't pop out in Imax.

The only popping out effect movie I watched is Alien Vs Monster Animation, the scene where some guy playing the Ping Pong thingy.

But I'm not really into 3D tech... Disappointed in Resident Evil 3D with all the 3D advertisement... LOL

Most if not all TVs don't send DTS out from the optical port, so no way around it. Otherwise, get a Dolby Digital AC3/5.1 version for the movies you are watching.
The solution is to get your source directly to your HTS and let it decode from there.

Thanks for the input Ben, was wondering if I can do that, i.e.:
1. PS3, Bluray Player, Astro Byond connect to TV HDMI.
2. TV optical output connect to Home Theatre/AVR.
3. Expect DTS/DD or whatsoever (not Stereo).

But since you highlighted this, then probably it's not the best approach.
My HT's HDMI changer goes kaput on me.. that's why I was thinking about that approach.

Ya, found out that Sony TV can't now,
previously using Samsung can, the have built in encoder for DTS,
Now input straight to HTS support 5.1, but interface not so nice

How about Astro HD channel Dolby Digital sound output? What is the correct setup ya?
Astro HDMI 3 to TV then HDMI 1 from TV to HTS can output 5.1?

Well if your HT cannot switch sources then there's a little bit of trouble there. You can try getting a HDMI switcher box perhaps?

Why so cheap omg...? I didn't see the Harvey Norman advertisement, and just now I bought the samsung ua55f7100 at rm5999, that's 1.1k extra now compare to what I thought was only rm500 extra... Haizz

don't be sad pokchik, I also sad too, paid for my samsung ua55f7100 on the same day harvey and ikano power advertised 55w804 at such a good price. I was considering these 2 tvs not sure which to choose, most places i went 55w804 at senq, sengheng, electrical shop, sony center, etc etc last week they quote me rm5499 no discount a single cent, dammit.
Then i went samsung shop at pyramid, they quote me best price rm5999 for f7100 which is good bargain compare to many other places around rmn6.5k to rm7k plus sometimes. So i thought rm500 difference only between the sony and samsung, i chose samsung cause of the higher model range and 200hz panel with active 3d and smart internet function which is miles ahead of sony.
But picture quality wise, actually to be honest, I prefer IPS over tn panel and sony is using IPS, however when I went to see the demo display between samsung and sony, I couldn't tell which is the better, cause samsung always display the same video demo and sony always display the same football clip...I can't do side by side comparison with the same video clip.
I will easily choose sony 55w804 over samsung 55f7100 if I know the price difference is almost 1.5k. Almost can buy a sony ps4 for this extra paid. sad wei

Hi Vannus, im also comparing ua55f710 and 55w804a. U bought the sammy for rm5999??? Isn't that a real good bargain? Went to senheng today and they quoted me rm7299 for ua55f7100 and rm4999 for 55w804a. Would really consider samsung if can get rm5999 too.

Arggh... cant make up my mind on which one to get.
Samsung.... bright and vivid... but Im worry to bright to hurt my eyes after watching too long. Like the Apps feature.
Sony... passive 3d is good.. I feel uncomfortable with active 3d glasses. The smart feature not as smart as Samsung, I guess? Good price of course!

How do you feel bout your 55f7100?

sony w804 if not mistaken is matte ips display. f7100 is glossy tn display. w804 100hz while f7100 i read on net they said 240hz. I think it's not bright cause usually will use natural setting and you can lower down the brightness a little. But to me most and foremost is the physical look where it has the silver sleek frame. =) at least for the rm500 extra during my time of choosing it. But for you i think sony is better value for money cause the gap is higher now rm1k++...But lastly it's up to your preferences. Both are good tvs.

Yeap that's right I feel like the 4k tv 80 inch sony is a wow but can't afford it at this moment. Maybe after 4-5 more years when the price is reasonable then can buy 1. There is always something out there will be better than what we buy today. So just be happy on the money you spend. There no right or wrong

They just announced new models at CES 2014 last week.
The W950B, W850B, W800B, W630B, and W600B. Very sure they'll have a new IPS panel on the W8B series.

Here are some brief details - http://store.sony.com/-cms-ces.2014.television.landing.page

Yes, looking forward to it too. After how Sony has sort of dissapointed with the current W8 series (in comparison to what they did with the W9 and W7/W6 that is), really hoping they have a better IPS panel in hand.

From what the youtube said about the colour reproduction. Yes, Sony W8 series vivid default settings has better colour reproduction and not colour blind. The tower picture is clear.

However about samsung what this guy says is totally not true. My new Samsung f7100 default setting out from the box, dynamic, standard and natural are colour blind and damm bright. That's totally crap. However I re-calibrated the standard setting, I can get what the result sony able to get. After completed the calibration, and when I put dynamic contrast to low or medium. My samsung still can see what sony can see and the picture is like popping up a bit real and it's crisp and clear that doesn't fatigue the eye. The colour spectrum is wide too. magenta and cyan, black, white, blue, green and red is awesome.

This is my calibration website and it's free.
http://www.avsforum.com/t/948496/avs-hd-70...mp4-calibration

I also did the same calibration on my computer LG IPS PC monitor. Colour is awesome, black is black and I never satisfied as before.

So for those who has this w8 series, you may try to calibrate your tv and make it even better.

Good luck =)

Use own eye balling to do it, however when comes to colour spectrum I can't do it, it requires colour filter tool.
So I just grab the color spectrum settings from avs forum. No choice ^^

hi, sorry this is a little bit out of the topic,

but i'm curious,
for gaming wise,
i was thinking of either getting sony KDL46W804A or Samsung 46" 7100/7500 series,
which would be better looking when it comes to playing PS4 ?

IIRC, the Samsung 7500 series has an input lag of 47ms and above. The 7100 is also about that high although I'm not quite sure.

The Samsung obviously looks better than the W804 though, but I personally feel that 47ms is a little bit too high for gaming. You may not be able to tell the lag if you aren't sensitive to it and aren't playing competitive games however.
So here's the deal, if you are going to get a Samsung ES7500, why not just get the Sony W904a instead? You get an input lag of 19ms, a TV that looks as good as the ES7500 (I personally feel W904 is even better with the deeper blacks and screen uniformity) and you pay less (last I checked).

Sony 904 I thought its at least 6k-7k+?
The only reason why I would want to go for Samsun is because of ps4 AND the smart function, so that I can watch movies as well sad.gif

And as I've understand, sony smart tv function usually needs to pay for most of the movies right ?
As compared to Samsung most of it it's free right ?
Any advice or any help on that sad.gif ?

This is normal for all LGE PASSIVE 3D panels.

This Sony (w8) uses PASSIVE 3D panel from LG, there is a FILM patern retarter fixed on top of the LCD panel. The horizontal gap between pixels is needed to properly or correctly register the odd and even lines of the polarizer, which gives you the 3D effect.

hmmm i thought that this effect only happens if you enable the 3d?

im seeing a few units that have variance in them, some are prominent, while some are not.
the one i have, i have got to sit at leaest 3 meters back to knock off noticing this.
it only occurs on certain color, light blue for instance.
the rest are perfect you cant see the imperfection.

see attachment.

Attached Image

do you have the 55 inch as well? if you load up windows 7 character wallpaper, the one with the cloud cartoon, you can see what i mean.

Yes i know what you mean, im referring to watching in 2D. There is a PERMANENT film (FPR layer) on the display, regardless in 2D or 3D. Thisl layer is absent on other models of sony TV. Check out LG 3D Cinema TV, its there too, being the same panel type.

Its a non issues since you wont be viewing the TV that close in 2D or 3D, in fact its 3D only works at distance 6ft above. I have not seen a display with FPR film that doesnt have this effect.

Also dirty screen effect (DSE) also common with panels with filters.

being a 55" the gap becomes more obvious compared to smaller models. This gap is a requiremennt for FPR polarizer passive 3D technology, google to learn more.

those ppl are more like CS with limitted knowledge base, changing a new unit will not fix problem.

backlight bleeding is a hit and miss thingy, some are bad some r better.

Also, I still see thin, black horizontal lines on FPR flat panels, especially in large single-color areas and text, that are not visible on active sets.

http://www.soundandvision.com/content/clos...-3d-flat-panels

So in 2d it should look like this, the left image.

Hi Culpa
I wanna ask you
I bought this tv to utilise 3d movie playback.
Had tried hsbs and hou, it works great
however when i play 3d iso file, i feel inconvenient as my eye easily get pain (not sure how to describe it)
it looks nice due to image sharpness and better resolution i think
Only my eye can't bear with it
do you know what the reason. Is it because of passive 3D(only handle half resolution)

Half resolution or left right 540p+540p should have not caused the headache. Active 3d flickering shutter is even worse.

The left and right 540p is interpolated by the brain to yield A virtual 1080p, it might literally not a true 1080p in technical sense, but the picture depth is better than half resolution. Our vision is more of a combined vision of both, never a seperate left and right.

When viewing 3d with FAST motion, never sit to close, try moving back further another 1-2ft.

Hi Mea Culpa,
I'm planning to get either the 46" or 50" w704 model. I don't plan to watch 3D movies and price affordability are the reasons I chose w704.

Also read somewhere that the color reproduction of the w704 is quite accurate out-of-the box. No need to calibrate by video professional.

Do you think this is a wise choice?

Do you even need 3D? If you don't, save some money and get the W7 instead. I've never recommended the W8 due to its decent-at-best black levels.

1) 46W704 - RM2650
2) 50W704 - RM3500
3) 47W804 - RM3500

I personally think 3D is stupid for a TV size under 60". It's just not immersive enough to be worth the trouble, it's also just a gimmick in my eyes that doesn't add visual flair to most movies save for a few special ones that does it well.
So it's up to you decide if 3D is important to you or not, if so then head for the W804 or even the LG LA7400.

Because it's not hard to find out? Check the panel serial, verify on the manufacturer's site, use a zoom lens to check on panel pixels, etc.
Do some research on panelook.com.

It's not difficult to find out what panel which TV uses, unless it is modified.

W6 - AUO VA panel
W7 - AUO VA panel
W8 - LG IPS
W9 - AUO VA Panel

i didnt buy from a shop, i got the factory reject model, got few scratches on the frame. The price offered was way lower than market price, so it was hard for me reject it, plus found a way to remove the scratches from the net by just using an eraser, which suprisingly work!

So far after using it for few days, function wise 100% working, just that it was rejected due cosmetics reason.

my bro got the w904 which is almost the same in terms of pq, but design wise, according to my bro, w954 is slightly thinner because it uses glass for the front n back of the tv

ARC has got nothing to do with 5.1, in a way whether they work or not. Read up on ARC - http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/arc.aspx

Explain more on why your HT isn't working though. No audio? No signal?
As for Sony's Smart TV, unfortunately it is something they'll never be able to match Samsung or LG in. Ridiculous, coming from a company who owns the PlayStation brand, lol.

At least there's Netflix and Hulu Plus however.

Yeah... that's the bad thing for Sony. BRAVIA SYNC incompatible with other brands.
I'm using Samsung HT 5.1 DVD system. Normally when i watch Bluray with my PS3 normally it works with 5.1 channel (was using optical cable from ps3/ps4 to Samsung HT). Since Sony W804A has HDMI (ARC) Input so i connected HDMI (ARC) to my Samsung HT but it works 2.1 channel instead of 5.1 channel. laugh.gif

Wondering is it becz of my HT must has ARC too?

If it's RM1k or less, then sure that's quite an exceptional value. RM3k? lol... that's highway robbery.

i didnt buy from a shop, i got the factory reject model, got few scratches on the frame. The price offered was way lower than market price, so it was hard for me reject it, plus found a way to remove the scratches from the net by just using an eraser, which suprisingly work!

So far after using it for few days, function wise 100% working, just that it was rejected due cosmetics reason.

my bro got the w904 which is almost the same in terms of pq, but design wise, according to my bro, w954 is slightly thinner because it uses glass for the front n back of the tv

thx for the info bro, did you buy it from a sony employee? or through any particular channel?

can't really disclose the price, but its 50-60% lower than market. it doesn't come with any 3d glasses. just the tv n the 2 remotes.

the supplier won't and can't guarantee the stock, i got lucky because the w954 was available that time, and only one. Sometimes he gets the 2012 model.

one time he got 55HX955 , sold it for below rm4k.

The stock doesn't come often, sometimes 1 tv in 1 month but model is unknown until the day before delivery.

Btw some TV will have scratches on the screen, but not noticeable if the TV is not. Or u can use Vaseline to cover up the scratch, and it works from personal experience.

Yea man.. I also from LG LCD so it's quite big difference and upgrade.. for my small room is 47W804 served me very good. Even my fiancee also can feel the difference. Yeah Sony Smart TV is quite boring. Only Youtube able to watch 1080 full hd as i dont have to connect with my Laptop to watch.  biggrin.gif

Regarding the ARC input. Hmmm... My old Samsung HT dont have ARC. I guess my HT 5.1 not working.
Is it becz of my HT is not ARC that's why 5.1 not working?
*
QUOTE(SSJBen @ Mar 3 2014, 07:48 PM)
ARC has got nothing to do with 5.1, in a way whether they work or not. Read up on ARC - http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/arc.aspx

Explain more on why your HT isn't working though. No audio? No signal?
As for Sony's Smart TV, unfortunately it is something they'll never be able to match Samsung or LG in. Ridiculous, coming from a company who owns the PlayStation brand, lol.

At least there's Netflix and Hulu Plus however.
*
Previously was discussing abt my problem with ARC.
At the end i didnt use the ARC port anymore. I'm using Optical Cable output from PS4 to my HT input.
Under PS4 Sound setting > [Primary Output Port] > [DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL)] and Bitstream instead of Linear PCM.
When watching bluray under setting needs to set Bitstream MIX. So my bluray movie is working with 5.1 DTS now. In PS4 XMB 5.1 is working as well. biggrin.gif

very interested in Sony 55" W804A model, i wish to ask if its possible to do this with this TV set:

laptop/pc >----HDMI----> W804A (TV) >---- Audio Digital Output----> 5.1 Surround Speakers.

assuming the source is a 5.1 audio file or 5.1 audio movie file, do i still get to output 5.1 audio to a 5.1 surround speakers?

I have a 55W804A for a few months now and recently picked up a 2nd 55W954A which was at clearance. The W954A is much slimmer but has much superior sound, in terms of bass, range and clarity while the W804A sound quality is very average in comparison. Also another main difference is the black on the W954A is very black vs. the W804A.

Actually I was quite happy with the W804A picture quality and was considering another W804A for the 2nd TV (Desa clearance at RM4599 for 55W804). Glad I bit the bullet and went for one of the last few 55W954A left in the market. New W955 is coming out very soon, and not many W954A left. I was told that the retail price of the W955 will be similar to the retail price of the W954A but it's very worth it if you can catch a clearance price on the 55W954A (RM6,999) and find one in the market. Most of them have been snapped up.

just got my new 55" W804A yesterday at Desa Home Theater at Desa Kompleks at Kepong for rm4,599. for some reason and i am not sure why, i decided to buy and paid around extra rm450 for three more years of warranty, so in total of five years. i upgraded from Toshiba 32" 32WL66E. was a bit worried that it might not fit in the car, the packing box for this TV is: 1489mm x 839mm x 172mm (luckily it fits in quite nicely in the car trunk without much hassled.) The box were a bit scarred with tears and dents but otherwise the TV looks good and in good condition.

here is a simple outline user experience review on it...

the good stuff...

1. the Passive 3D is great, easy on the eyes, and once you set the Simulated3D to "high" and angle my height a bit, the effects is WOW thumbup.gif comes with four glasses, good quantity for a family movie night. 3D is bright and vibrant compare to normal viewing. watching anime with Simulated3D is an incredible feeling.

2. simple and easy first time setup. quite user friendly for first time users.

3. the load from powering-on to ready to view is around 10 seconds.

4. tried Diablo 3 and some FPS games, the response is incredible. the low input lag of this TV is truly great.

5. easy to adjust sound menu and the decoding from variety of source seems pretty good.

6. ability to plug in my mobile HDD with movies and series and play and load all of them.

7. up scaling from SD to FHD is quite good. you really have to tweak the settings to make it look all nice though its "vivid" preset is quite alright as well. Custom setting for best effect. from 720p to 1080p especially anime is very vibrant and bright from mobile HDD. a truly different feeling. seeing one piece in a truly different light. hahaha...

the not-so-good stuff...

8. as the W804A has only an audio digital and a headphone output, i have an old Logitech G51, and i have to route a 3.5mm jack and converted to the red/white connection.

9. loaded a mobile HDD into, the browsing menu is not so friendly especially when you have long file names and it hang a few times and restarted itself especially folders that have many many files like fifty to hundred movie files. it would be good to have a list option than thumbnail option of video files.

10. no subtitles fonts setting. it comes with default white fonts with a 25% transparent background. which makes it pretty ugly.

11. the menu is a bit slow sometimes and there is a lot of sub-categories. luckily the remote has a few shortcut buttons that makes it easier. if not it be quite annoying to switch certain items or options.

12. the brightness becomes quite dimm/dark after i set the motion to "clear / clear plus / impulse" which i have to brighten & enhance it up with other colors. which at many times not enough to compensate the loss of brightness. i am still trying to work around this and hopefully the update software would make this a lot better. this is also considering that i has set backlight to MAX.

i haven't got time to use it for long and chance update the software for it yet but maybe there will be more improvements after the update.

all in all,
i am still pretty happy with the 55" W804A and i did compare it with the new 50" W800B, i got the chance to compare it side by side in The Curve Sony Store and the W800B feels so small even despite its just a 5" difference and they both look almost the same to my eyes. i choose the W804A because of low input lag, extra 5" (even thought 55" W800B is coming soon), and passive 3D (easy on the eyes & battery free).

Asuming your speakers has optical input, then yes.
However, do understand that the W804 only passthrough Dolby Digital and not DTS. The majority of movies are encoded in DTS, so using the pass-through from the optical out the W804 would mean for the audio to be downmixed into LPCM 2.0 (stereo).

There is a trick of course, where you can use LAV Audio and Reclock to encode a DTS file into AC3 Dolby Digital before transporting the signal through HDMI.

Your speakers also need to decode Dolby Digital in order for surround to work.

In regards to your opinion:

12) No amount of firmware/software updates will fix the dark screen issue. Reason is simple, because "clear/clear plus/ impulse" is basically a mode that interpolates the screen achieve a higher refresh rate. It is how it is, nothing will fix this and it is the same on all other TVs.

Bro Ben,
thank you for the clarification, please forgive me if i did ask any dumb question as i am pretty new to the AV stuff and was reading around about codecs and stuff... for a newbie like me, its pretty rclxub.gif rclxub.gif
really appreciate your help.

now i am learning to trying to reconfigure the MPC (Media Player Classic) to have audio output through the HDMI as Dolby Digital 5.1 or AC3 5.1 to fully enjoy the surround experience. i am planning to get the Logitech Z906 in the future. i notice i have a lot of video files that are in AAC 5.1 format as i go through their audio properties.

this link seems to teach "How to config ffdshow/LAV and reclock for HD audio"
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=152520http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=152520

Bro Ben,
when you said this TV pass through Dolby Digital to the optical output, does this also include Dolby Digital 5.1?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

on another note about the Sony W804A,
playing files from laptop or through USB drive, the colors / motion / sharpness is very very nice.

Dolby Digital is 5.1.
Check up on Dolby's site to see all their technologies - http://www.dolby.com/us/en/consumer/techno...er/listing.html

Just don't be suckered into their marketing of course. smile.gif

Also, why would you want to spend money on such poor quality speakers? Spending RM1.2k on the Z906? Kind of a waste. For a little more (RM1.7k or so) you could get a much better entry level Yamaha NS-P40 with an entry level Yamaha V375. You'd have much better expandability in the future.
Even the Denon DHT-1312XP is a better buy than the Z906, despite being old http://www.lazada.com.my/denon-dht-1312xp-...atre-58487.html

There is no 55" W800B as far as I know. 50" is the largest panel size for W800B. Yes, the blacks on the W800B is much better vs the W804A but the size is disappointingly a little too small. 55" W800B would have been a good model.

The 70" W850B is way too bulky to wall hang based on what I saw at Desa Home Theatre. Perhaps the 60" W850B will be the next best option but I haven't seen one in real life here in MY.

Bro Ben,
thanks for the info. will look into it and hopefully there will be a sale somewhere or sometime in the future. the Yamaha NS-P40 & Yamaha V475 looks promising but i hope not to blow the budget above 1K, will keep an eye out. Definitely agreed on the expandability part.
Confuse on the Dolby Technolgies. hahaha... rclxub.gif

Bro Geekin,
you are right, at the moment it is not available, but i am pretty sure it will be available somewhere in year 2014.

Bro Glamour,
no idea when 55" W800B will be coming out, i just saw it on the catalog listed as "coming soon". i googled around it seems to say available around Autumm 2014. That feels like a long long time.

AS for why i decided Sony instead of other brands, i guess...

1. i got sold by the X-Reality Technology. i know... i know... could be marketing gimmick. rolleyes.gif

2. Samsung it seems is exclusively in Active 3D, at least in its 2013 models. I wanted Passive 3D as i read around that its more comfortable on the eye, less flickering, and no need batteries.

3. Didn't quite like Panasonic or Toshiba. Not sure why.

4. the W804A has one of the best lowest input lag. The W7XX doesn't have 3D and W9XX are way beyond my budget.

5. 55" is a nice mid size point and the other manufacturers are a bit not too keen on this, they are either bigger or smaller in size.

6. Audio Passthrough.
althought W804A is not listed there but it seems Sony is more or less a safe bet.
http://www.cnet.com/news/20-tvs-tested-whi...to-a-sound-bar/

7. i saw LG current lineup, the nearest to W804A is its 7400? i could be wrong. but that one cost a lot more.

8. Sony & Samsung TV models seems to have a luxury look to them. hehehe...

i have a w904A and i tried playing mkv files both movies and anime from a hdd plugged into the usb port but the subtitles are white square boxes instead of fonts and I can only select from one subtitle using the remote. I cant select the other subtitles in the mkv. I have checked the file in mkvtoolnix. is there a trick to seeing the proper subtitles?

Because plenty complained about last year's W804 having shitty black levels and poor color vibrance, which actually looked worse than the much cheaper W674.
Sony switched the W8 series to AUO VA panels this year and thus active 3D instead of passive 3D that was possible with the LG IPS panel on the W804.

For me personally, yes. I hated how poor the blacks were on the W804. Though the IPS panel on the W804 is a necessity for the viewing angles if your room is setup with sofas beyond the 60 degree viewing angle limit of a VA panel. You can certainly still watch, but colors will shift beyond 60 degrees (some VA panels are even worse) eventhough specs state that they have an angle limit of up to 178 degrees.

So, see how your room is setup to be like.

Though if you were to go for an IPS panel, I'd suggest you go back to LG instead.

Thanks 4 d info. notworthy.gif

D TV is for my living hall, where d viewing distance is 2.4m from sofa. Furthermore, I need bigger angel view for all my family members. Hence, W804 is out.

If looking for LG as alternative, wat ur suggestion? I need a TV tat have

1) low input lag for gaming
2) playin DLNA movie that supports fr my NAS
3) 3D

Budget less than RM4k therefore I only can think of W800B

Yes, this lg supports dlna but just checked the price,
47 = RM3K
55 = RM5K

Wif that price, I find that it more worth it to get 2014 model 50W800B @ RM3.5K

RM3,999 is only the MSRP. Look for retail elec shop, e.g. TBM is selling @ RM3.4k

the first time i saw W800B in local stores, i wonder why they opt the 50" size.
now i know, they no longer use LG panel.
tried the GUX, and i like it more than last year's model.
the only that turned me down is the active 3D.

now i'm waiting for LG to launch their TVs.
the latest model from LG which uses webOS seems gooding.

for me, if the price is the same between 55W804 vs 50W800B, i'll go for the 55.
just because of the additional size and ability to watch 3D while lying sideways on my sofa.
as for the pq, its minimal to me.

still... i really love the webOS. damn hard to decide.

I went window shopping last week, and they sell the 55W804a at the same price with the 50W800B.
so yeah, my comparison is legit.

alex,

after LG announce the availability in our local stores, i'll wait for Raya promo, than again the YES promo.
if the price is still not right, i'll wait for the 2015 edition to launch, then buy the 2014 model..

but then again, the 2015's webOS might be much better.

i really hope it is upgradeable for this year model.

I went window shopping last week, and they sell the 55W804a at the same price with the 50W800B.
so yeah, my comparison is legit.

No luck, too far.

It is very good deal, as SONY Malaysia is selling 47W804A at RM3,999 which is same price as 50W800B. But 55W804A at RM5,499

47W804A

i noticed that as well. wonder why Sony still maintain the pricing for old stocks.
comparing between those two, i obviously choose the W800B regardless of the passive 3D.
for me, the menu is much more user friendly than the 2013's models.

for my opinion, they might use back the same panel, upgrade the contrast & brightness, upgrade with webOS but with locked features so tat only currently version 2014 will hav such features but not the previous 1... compare the price shown on the foreign countries websites the price isnt tat big difference, so i assume they just add something different tats all but not fully change...

what i meant was i hope that the OS is upgradeable. the webOS will improve through updates over time, i believe.
they should be selling the new model right now, it's already end of April.

i dont think so, bcoz once upgradeable, whose gonna change new tv then? even samsung e8000 series evolution kit can b upgradeable like f8000, but then main hardware still fix, it only upgrade partial firmware just to make it slightly different but not totally changed...

Which would be a better TV? the Sony 55W804A or the Panasonic TX-55ET60?

Looks wise, imo the Panasonic wins hands down. I'm not too sure about the color/clarity/backlight/etc.

Anyone has any opinions? Primarily using it for watching blu-ray, astro and a little bit of PS4 gaming.

firmware and OS update should be ok, IMO. like when we upgrade our androids. they can retain the hardware, thats no problem.
i just dont want to stuck with the same GUI like the previous Sony XMB or LG Smart Hub.

any idea how much the 55wt60k costs now? is that the unit with IPS panel?

i am contemplating in between the Sony 55w804a and Lg 55la8600

the lg is probably 2013 edition and i am not sure about the sony, both costs roughly around 5000 bucks

for me, i for sure wil pick 55la8600 bcoz the origin of ips panel comes from lg, w804 also using the same panel, but the internal smart features r totally different. lg smart has lots of things to play with... these i cant explain further but u hav to visit the shops to hav a good look at it... u wont b surprise if u compare these 2 models... but final pick lg...

i dont think 55" W850B will come into our market soon.
they have the 55" W800B advertised as "soon" in their web, and also 70" W850B as available for Rm12,999.

if it's me, i'll get the 954A.

Agree. The W954A is top of the line and is absolutely beautiful with a single slab of glass look. It's a rare offer and if you call around most shops no longer has stock of the 55W954A left since it went on clearance.

To be quite frank with you, Triluminous doesn't mean anything. In reality, Sony does try and handpick the best produced AUO panels for their flagship TVs (in this case, the W954a). They would then calibrate the sets so that it would look better than other AUO panel used in their other lines (W6 and W7) out of the box. Majority of users do not have calibration tools or even the knowledge to go around it, so yeah basically Triluminos makes the W9 look better than the other lines through properly picked panels and calibration, not because Triluminous is some magic LCD panel that does wonders.

That being said, the W9 would obviously look better even after post-calibration in comparison to the W6/W7 due to generally better panel uniformity and better motion handling. It's still the best all-around 1080p LCD TV from 2013 though.

So yeah, don't always get suckered up into Sony's marketing.

even if it doesn't mean anything (to you at least), it still produces one of the best color among displays out there.
and with the lesser price of some of the old models, it really outweighs other competitors.

RM3999 at courts,
http://www.courts.com.my/product/IP08219/s...d-tv-kdl55w804a

Thinking of KDL-60R550A model instead, do let me know where to get the cheapest if you know any. laugh.gif
*
Really good deal, I would have bought it if I spotted this earlier. Courts is the last place I'd check for good deal, darn.
R550A cheapest I checked was RM5199 but again, out of stock too, checked in Puchong and Harvey Norman Setia Alam

Apart from 5" more, i'd go for KDL55W804A as higher tier than the R550 series.

I didn't manage to get W804A, did not see this promotion when I made my purchase, super regretted it
Bought LG LA8600 instead, RM5k from a shop in Puchong. Initially was quoted RM5.6k for that unit, until I showed the salesman Yesmember website, he then sold it to me at RM5k. I think also partly due to I asked for refund from him given that I paid for W804A but the next day he told me out of stock, so might as well sell at lower price than to lose the deal entirely

You wanna get W804A initially and later you went for LG LA8600 instead after being told that W804A out of stock?
If this is the case, you should demand for full refund from him and not choose another brand/model.

I asked for full refund as they quoted other replacements at higher price (including LA8600 at $5.6k), but later they revised it down to RM5k after I told them I can get better deal elsewhere for LA8600, and would ask for full refund if they can't match the offer. They got back to me few days later and said they'd match the deal. So why not? Besides Yesmember, I didn't know anywhere else selling that model at such low price, and few shops that I went told me W804A already out of stock as well. Though after I read about Courts selling W804A at RM3999 today, instant regret laugh.gif

Netflix (and other apps) does not appear on your Sony TV unless you are connected to a VPN/third-party DNS. So yeah, set your connection up properly first be it through your TV or router.

Different DNS services has different ways of setting them up.

Choose the DNS service you want then follow their guides.
https://simpletv.co/
http://www.unlocator.com/
http://www.smartydns.com/
http://www.proxydns.co/

All these are good, so choose the one which is most suitable to you. They have guides for various devices.

All the suggested DNS services are paid sites except for the last one (proxydns) which i tried already but does not work however I will try again.
Some step by step guidance on a free service provider will be nice smile.gif

Choose whichever you like. A DNS is simply just a DNS, doesn't matter who your ISP is.

Unfortunately, free DNS are often useless, unstable and are easily blocked by Netflix/Hulu+/any other paid streaming service. So yeah, pay a little bit and forget about the hassle.
ProxyDNS is the cheapest and it has worked for me. I'm currently using SimpleTV.

The DNS can be set on the TV and that is all it takes right? And also, netflix and hulu and all would automatically be downloaded once the TV detects that I am in 'US' ? Nothing else needed?

Yes.
You don't have to download the apps, it's actually already there in the TV. Just locked out of view and usage if you aren't "in" the US.

All the DNS service that I've listed has free trials, so try them out and see which works best for you (by right in theory, there shouldn't be a difference).

Bro, I managed to get Netflix working!! I am not sure what I did right. I mean I did change the DNS address but it didn't appear immediately after that. After 1 day only did the app appear with a few other apps not previously seen like Hulu Plus etc.I guess the tv updated itself after changing the DNS address. rclxms.gif

i use this TV for air race games and FPS such as Bioshock Infinite. so far i don't feel any input lag that is noticeable. but then again, i am connecting it using HDMI and from my laptop to play games.
