Haha.. that is quite a quick response!

Actually i m planning to get a foldie to commute from house to office. Basically from Jalan Genting Klang to Jalan Tun Razak. All though it is only for work, but i foresee i might be using it to tour around and adventure, maybe with you guys one day.

Have been reading this thread and did some researches until i got myself blurred.

My budget is below 1000 but depends on whether the bike below that price possible to be upgraded later or not by adding parts. Else, i might need to increase my budget. Plus in looking into rigidity so it last longer and light at the same time.

Raleigh UGO seems attractive for the price of Rm650 (either from kajang or selayang). Dahon and Terns maybe better but too many range of models to choose (that is why i got blurred). Prolly need to visit those shops one day

Basically, no one bike is perfect cos maybe there is one or two thing need to tolerate but hopefully can find the best fit me.

In dilemma now.. lol..
*
Ugo with RM650 price is consider a valuable buy. Myself riding one. So far so good.
If branded, go for Dahon basic one which is Dahon Vybe C7. Price below RM1k.
Better still get basic Tern Link C7 which will cost you somewhere RM1.3k ish..

Yesterday was riding with my friend on tarmac slightly downhill. I am in front and suddenly my fren crashed on head. How it happen according to him he duno why do sudden brake and it flip. (LGS bike).
Had a head trauma, broken teeth, crack finger and and blood from face etc. Blackout for a few seconds.
When I bring him to Clinic, he keep on asking me repeated question such as what day is today, are we riding together, and he cant remember anything except being in the office. (short term memory loss/lapse)
Then after cleaning injury, clinic suggest to go hospital. Go Columbia Asia Bandar Puteri, check by emergency dept (9pm) and ask me to go Sunway Medical as they doesn't have neuro-surgent there. When otw to CA, he finally started to gain back his memory. I thought he is back to norm but nope, it doesn't. Now he keep on repeating what he had jes said over and over again.
Reached Sunway, x-ray arm and found crack on finger and need plastering. X-Ray on head and lucky no problem after being checked by Neuro-surgent. Jes something like head trauma where patient suffer short term memory lost and will be back to normal after a few hours. What he did in short time, he couldn't remember. Admitted for a day for observation.
Later will go visit him again.. Freak me out. Now wan to cycle also takut takut a bit liau..

raleigh ugo is better than urbano 3.0? pls enlighten me..
*
1. Frame - Both Alloy Frame
2. Gear - Both 52T crank but Raleigh 7 speed while Polygon 6 speed = Raleigh
3. Rim - Raleigh doublewall while Polygon singlewall = Raleigh
4. Brake - Promax vs Tekro = about the same

I would go for Raleigh mainly because of more gear ratio.

Thanks for all the concern. He also didn't know why he brake and I believe he brake front brake hence wheelkang (wheelie belakang), flip and crash with head down first. Lucky ada helmet! Also he is quite heavy hence the impact is more critical.

i think the older urbano 3.0 is 6 speed, but the latest one is 7 speed.  my urbano 3.0 that i bought in SG last dec is 7 speed.  it is the one in the link below.

If the speed and price is same, then choose whichever brand, design and colour u like. tongue.gif

All these got to do with rider experience and bike's front brakes.

1. always wear helmet no matter what
2. buckle your helmet tightly. Wearing them without fasten properly = no helmet protection also
3. ask your bike mechanic to reduce the tightness of front brakes (especially folding bikes 20" with disc brakes)
4. train at grass area with emergency brakes, get used to how your bike behave under emergency brakes
5. reduce protruding items on your handle bar (when u slam your brakes, your face will hit handle bar first)
For newbies going downhill and not familiar with the route. Follow all the rules above.

- Then lower your seat a little and bend down while riding to lower the CG (centre of gravity)
- do not go panic and slam front brakes.
- do not try to catch up with experienced riders while going downhill

Lastly, if u have no confidence over steep DH, comedown and push. icon_rolleyes.gif

last year when coming down from Gunung Jerai uncle behind me slammed front brakes and he literally turn into zombie like face.

i was in front of him going 40+ then heard loud bang, then i cycled back to helped him.

He got deep cuts on the forehead and bleeding all over his face.
I picked up pieces of front tooth from the road. Then he was spewing blood from his mouth, whole face all bleeding.
His gang finally came with pick-up truck and sent him to hospital.

Should be a nice morning ride but ended tragically.

let me rephrase that
Slamming front brakes is very dangerous. Slamming front brakes on a downhill, you'll guarantee to miss your face without scars

Exactly what happen to my fren. Slammed front brake over 25kph DH.
I did 55kph during my DH last Saturday and come to think of it, damn scary now. doh.gif

We all just want to ride and sweat it out. Some like Dahons (like me and wife), some like Terns and some like Raleigh, Whatever the brand, we still ride, the bike will still takes us to the intended place. Maintenance is also important and to be able to spot what's wrong with the bike, one needs to be able to feel a perfect bike first. This has to be ensured by the shop that sells the bike. I have bought 3 bikes from Sew Leong in Dengkil. Why? He's cheaper because since his shop or rather father's shop is fully paid up, my guess, and overheads are way way lower than the city's bike shop. Every bike that I bought, I buy it straight from the box and I don't need it to be adjusted. But that's me, because I have been fiddling with bicycles since I was in secondary school.

To state a fact, all except one bike mechanic are not truly qualified if you look for paper qualifications. Only Gary of CCI in Penang is truly qualified. He was supposed to take engineering in US but when he arrived, he switched to bicycle courses and spent a year doing that. His grandfather was so angry with him after finding out and stop talking to him. Later, (it's his grandson anyway), he still funded him to start a bike shop CCI. I knew him well when I was in into mountain biking and buys stuffs to upgrade my riding gang's bike. I also seek a lot of technical advises from him. His shop was finally taken over by a son of a rich banker who was also a fellow rider when he failed in business and till today it's still in Penang. No matter how technical he can be, Chin Aik is still doing well, learning the ropes, not from US or any cycle shops but from experience. My point here is, in Malaysia we learn to become good from scratch. The bike mechanics here in Malaysia could have been a car salesman, a hawker selling Hokkien mee (like me  tongue.gif ) or even an engineer.

Unless you understand the geometry of a bicycle frame, how physics affects the ride, we are not specialist. Just knowing, 'this is good , this is lousy' or in fact, just knowing to to dis-assemble and assemble a bike does not makes us specialist. Neither does knowing how to adjust all parts of the bikes , we can call ourselves specialist. It's all a learning curve. I also know of a bike mechanic who thinks he knows it all and feels threaten when some plain looking old rider can do better than him. I mean, shouldn't he improve himself by trying to learn what he doesn't know. There must be something he don't know, right.

Then they are others who are well educated, hence can read a lot of literature about bikes. He gets every detail of the bike from the net, from manuals from the boss of the company itself. He can tell you anything regarding bikes but couldn't spin a spanner. Can you call that specialist?

My point is, brand is nothing! All bikes can be ridden and it is just a matter of comfort and also the EASE of maintenance. Just buy whatever brands we like according to one's budget and preference. Not all can afford a 5K to 10K bikes. Even if you can start with a RM700 bike, you can still upgrade it later. It's like savings while riding. Makes it easier to start. Even if you buy a Trinx or an XDS, you can slowly buy better components and upgrade step by step. Then at the final stages, you have double cranks and FD, 9 or 10 speed, lighter seat post and handlebars, better cables, better pedals, better seats and tires and finally you can change a frame. Then you get your dream bike.  rclxms.gif Many can't afford even the first bike, let alone have multiple bikes, like, this bike for this route and that bike for that route etc.etc.

IT'S THE PEOPLE WHO TRY TO BE CLEVER WHO NEVER ARE ; THE PEOPLE WHO ARE CLEVER NEVER THINK OF TRYING TO BE.
