Striker left with sickening cut after a clash of heads in training and is set to miss Anfield, Moldova and Ukraine

Wayne Rooney has had 10 stitches inserted in a horror head injury that will sideline him for both Manchester United and England this week.

He suffered the sickening gash to his forehead after an ­accidental collision with team-mate Phil Jones during the champions' final preparations for today’s clash with Liverpool.

The striker is now out of United’s Anfield ­showdown and looks ­certain to miss England’s ­crucial World Cup games against Moldova and Ukraine.

Rooney will wake up with a huge headache this morning - and Moyes and Hodgson will know exactly how their star striker is feeling.

The striker needed several stitches and left United’s Carrington training ground with his head swathed in bandages.

And Sunday Mirror Sport can reveal that ­he is out of the trip to his native Merseyside.

The Old Trafford’s medical team have ­already contacted the FA to inform them that the head wound is serious enough to sideline the 27-year-old striker for England’s forthcoming World Cup double header.

The Three Lions face ­Moldova at Wembley on Friday night before travelling to face Ukraine in Kiev on ­Tuesday night. England need to win both matches as they pursue their qualification for next year’s World Cup finals in Brazil.

Rooney’s absence will be a massive blow for both his club and country.

Manchester United coach David Moyes has warned fans that it could take up to two years to develop a side in his own image at Old Trafford.
The Scot has admitted that he has already called on the advice of Sir Alex Ferguson half-a-dozen times but will not be using his predecessor to help him secure transfer targets in the last week of the window.

‘Normally, a new manager never inherits a team that is as good [as Manchester United],’ said Moyes (right). ‘Typically, you inherit the job because your predecessor was sacked — because the team haven’t had the desired results. Here it’s completely different. I take over from a manager who has succeeded. But United are a club who have always had to evolve, grow, and that will encourage me during the next two years.

‘But the previous coach left incredible things in place. The most important is the mentality, the mentality of winning — “We won the title? OK. Win the next one”. This is something that is difficult to express in words, but when you’re immersed in it you feel it, you see it. The players have this spirit of competition.

‘But it will take me perhaps 18 months or two years to change things as I wish. How long did it take Sir Alex to make changes the way he wanted? What is great is that I will have the opportunity to do this at Manchester United. I would not have been given this at other clubs. I went to see him the other day, while recovering from his hip surgery, and he was terrific. I can call for his advice whenever it suits,’ he said.

‘I’ve talked to him a half-dozen times. It will be hard, very hard, for anyone to approach [what he accomplished]. But I worked hard at Preston and Everton to get to this position and I’ll work hard for Manchester United to remain at the top.

‘I don’t go to see him to ask advice but I will say, “This is what we’re doing, what do you think will happen?” He is someone who will be part of the fabric here. The day he told me that I had a job, after 10 minutes we were already talking about the team, what to do, what would be expected of me. He told me things straight.’

Manchester United are edging towards a £36million deal for Marouane Fellaini after Everton asked for Jesse Lingard on loan for the season, write Steve Bates and Alan Nixon of the Sunday People.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez wants to take United midfielder Lingard as part of the deal and Old Trafford boss David Moyes will make a decision after Sunday’s clash with Liverpool on whether to release the highly-rated England under-21 star.

Fellaini is ready to quit Everton after agreeing to an emotional farewell against Cardiff on Saturday.

The Belgian agreed to turn out only after crisis talks with Martinez who pleaded with him to give one last performance.

Fellaini played in the 0-0 draw and now expects Martinez to honour his agreement and let him go to United.
