Super Puma EC225s set to return to work

By Rob Watts London 12 July 2013 00:00 GMT
Regulators have given the go-ahead for the North Sea fleet of Super Puma EC225 helicopters — grounded after two emergency ditchings last year — to resume flights over water if new safety checks are passed.

Concerns on the labor shortage in the oil and gas industry, the BIG CREW CHANGE is one of the reason. I guess this is the global issue not only in US. So folks, keep trying and don't give up..

"As of 2011, 26 million U.S. jobs – 20 percent of all jobs – require a high-level of knowledge in any one of the STEM fields. Additionally, between 2008 and 2018, there will be 2.4 million job vacancies for STEM workers, according to a Georgetown University STEM report. Of these job vacancies, a large percentage is needed in the oil and gas industry. Around 64 percent of all companies report concerns over filling skilled job positions in the coming year.

Most of the positions needed in the industry are specialized and in areas that didn't even exist a decade or two ago, such as seismic interpreter, hydrocarbon mud logger, geomechanics, and subsea engineer.

"Companies frequently cite the skills shortage as the biggest challenge in achieving growth so as an industry we are pulling out all the stops to make sure we have the skilled people required to develop oil and gas for decades to come," said Malcolm Webb, Oil & Gas UK's chief executive, in a statement."

QUOTE(Stamp @ Aug 17 2013, 07:02 PM)
I was recently told that of a basic salary for a fresh engineering graduate working in oil and gas (a PSC in Msia) to be RM6K, which I thought could be the highest salary for a fresh graduate in oil & gas Malaysia.

Any other company offering higher than that?

Im curious to know.
*
I know some drilling companies pay higher than that for the engineering graduates. Especially for their training program/fast track program. But it is not massive recruitment like the operating companies. very limited.

I'm talking about the basic salary but if total salary including offshore allowance, I guess most of the fresh graduates in the service companies (i.e slb, BH, HAL etc) will get more than RM6K...

hi, guys. just want to know. does he or she has to know how to swim to work on the offshore? thanks..
*
I would say it is not compulsary. But it is good if you know how to swim. During the Bosiet/Huet, for those who are don't know how to swim will have more attention from the instructor (if you mengaku you dont know la).

Cannot deny this industry is cyclical and very dependent on whether the company you're working for managed to renew their contracts. So, no more rotation for me since I am back to my home country. The work arrangement will be on-call.

TalentCorp as I am just a regular degree holder, would require 5 years plus outside Malaysia to return and get the goodies. So, I did 6 years in Qatar, 2 in Brazil, now can balik and enjoy a bit... Then cabut again in 2~3 years time, wash, rinse, repeat! TalentCorp REP is easy to apply (can be done online), especially when you're in O&G industry since it is NKEA.

If anyone thinking to sit for IADC/IWCF well control course to boost their career (which I dont know it happens or not), I suggest you have/read some basic drilling knowledge and principles and also the well control equipments.

Secondly, please choose the correct training provider. Some instructors will teach you how to answer the exam questions without telling the theory behind it and this will make you struggle. And if you want, I suggest you start with IADC first...

I'm not telling that you will not pass the exam but for your benefit especially for those who are self-sponsored,I hope you dont risk your usd2000 for something that you will just stressed your mind thinking to only pass the exam.

Just sharing...

Bart, better to stay with SK. U should know why, the are big EPCIC company know. They targeting all market in Malaysia.
Furthermore they have IBD (International Business Dept) to look potential international projects.

Sometimes we need to choose salary might be less, but long term career path is good. Or some of company will paid high, but the project only have 1 and 2. So you think and decide.
