Oh yeah. I heard there was already a new window, but damn! I've just got this laptop with windows 8, and just when i'm getting used to this, a new version came out?  doh.gif  doh.gif  doh.gif

Btw, what's the difference between win8 and win8.1? is there any difference in terms of gaming performance, boot-up, security, etc? If it only differs by some apps, then sorry... win 8 all the way smile.gif

win 8.1 ?
I just formatted my y400 to win8 yesterday.

Just a minor upgrade from W8.
Most of the tweak is on the UI. And for those who hate Modern UI, great news smile.gif brows.gif

1) Why don't you try all the laptops you stated above with battery only. Take off the power supply. You will notice a lag spike. WHY? Laptop is underclocking itselt to allow for the battery drainage. 6 cell battery with a high end graphics card will last 20 - 30 mins maximum. Don't believe? Go test yourself.

2) So even with optimus, so what? Haswell? SO?
The GPU is the one thats draining your battery fast, your processor can be efficient as hell, but your BIOS will still downlock itself to save battery life. and thats when YOU LAG. As a 'gamer on the go' with 40mins of battery life and laggy gameplay, you SYOK ar?

3) The lenovo y500 is no exception. Its lags when you run on battery too. Its just normal with 2 graphics card and all.

Don't call other people troll please. Learn to respect before you flame others.
*
1. Actually, certain models allow users to set power profile. User can select "Max Performance" (for example, and can further customise) even when on battery only. The laptop will not lag (CPU & GPU still run on max) even laptop is on battery, just that it will drain battery very very fast laugh.gif

2. He is talking about portability as well. Gamers may have other part of their life to think about, you know smile.gif So when someone are surfing the net or doing some light work, having Optimus is definitely a major plus.
Haswell also has much better IGPU, so a lot of tasks could be run with the IGPU only.
If some gamers seriously get hands itchy when only battery power is available, they could force the game to launch with IGPU only (in the Optimus ap), turn down the details, and can still get some fun smile.gif

Let's make this very clear doh.gif

Y410p do NOT have mSATA port.
It has the latest NGFF m.2 port.
Do not think of buying a mSATA SSD and putting it into Y410p. It will not fit.
When the Y510p come to Malaysia, it is the same deal. No mSATA port. Only NGFF m.2 port.
SSD brands that has m.2 port form factor include Crucial M500, Intel 530 (to be launched in Aug13), Samsung (inside the latest MacBook, http://thessdreview.com/our-reviews/2013-m...ie-ssd-review/), Plextor (late Aug13) ....
BUT, don't go out and buy those m.2 SSD. The problem is the length. Lenovo somehow only leave space for a 42mm long m.2 SSD card, which rule out all the large capacity m.2 SSD which are 60/80/110 mm long doh.gif
And m.2 is a very new interface. So hold your horses smile.gif
http://blog.virtium.com/?p=378

In short, if you want large capacity (> 128G) SSD in your Y410P or coming Y510P, you only viable options:
a. Swap out the HDD with SATA SSD (easy);
b. Sacrifice the ODD (need caddy).

If you want small capacity (~ 32GB) SSD for caching in Y410P or 510P, do NOT buy mSATA SSD.

W8 has windows defender for free.
W7, if you want, you can use Microsoft security essentials.
Personally, I just find most Anti-Virus being resource hog. And if I take normal precaution in handling my files / downloads / emails, I could make do without anti-virus.

Any recommendations on who I could buy a Lenovo Y500 or Y510P from in Penang?
Just came from a shop last weekend & either the salesman there don't know the model well, or just trying to sell me the darn laptop by telling me what he thinks I want to hear.
Laptops do not have a FTL drive yet.

you can contact hikari at LYN garage sales.

Just got a msg from Hikari85. The Lenovo Y510P should be available at the end of August. Hmm. Wonder got merdeka sale or not.
I'm considering getting either a Y500 or a Y510P from her. Anyone have any experience buying stuff from her or not?

Thanks,
*
Hikari85 is a reputable seller.
They don't carry much inventory, very lean. Distributors confirm to them that there are stocks, then they take order and take payment from clients.
If you are in Penang or Butterworth area, can self collect.

and do you think 2 years warranty is enough? i am thinking like a laptop after 2 years is old enough to retire already  hmm.gif

Reseller sifus like storm88, hikari85, devour ... should get some indication already tongue.gif
2-3 years is about right for upgrade cycle smile.gif By then you'd start working already? More bullets to spray laugh.gif

Apologies if this is out of topic/scope, but would I really see a tangible major difference in performance between the Y400(i5) & Z400(i7)?

Mainly using for Video, photo editing (LR4, PS CS6) and also some gaming (I play skyrim on lowest settings on my old laptop) and will not be my focus, mainly games like MMOs, and maybe XCOM, or games like that, I do not need highest anything as I'm on budget and am realistic with expectations.

Thanks
*
Y400 local set don't spec with i5. If you go for grey import, beware of the Lenovo Malaysia warranty support issue.

The new XCOM do benefit from the better GT750M in Y400.

i7 in Z400 is pushing the thermal profile to rather uncomfortable territory tongue.gif

Y400, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT750M@RM2799, 4GB, 500GB, W8, 120wPSU, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty
Y410p, i7-4700MQ + GT750M(GDDR5)@RM2899, 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, 120w psu, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty
Z400 touch, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT740M + (1366x768, touch)@RM2799, 4GB, 1TB, W8; 2 years warranty

Looking at the RSP, go with the Y410p, if it is within your budget.

Ideally I would like to get the y410p though its slightly outta my budget reach for now. And not too sure I can wait too long as I'm still using my circa 2008 HP DV4 which feels like its on its last legs.

Ahh my bad, meant to be i5 Z400 & i7 Y400... facepalm

If you really can't wait to save up more, Z400T with GT740M could give you quite good performance in HD resolution.
But I strongly suggest you hang on for may be 1 to 2 more months for Haswell refresh smile.gif

Y500 local set stocks are drying up fast. Good luck finding them smile.gif Go with Y510P lah smile.gif
Yes, if you could find the Y500 single GPU, you could buy the external GPU later and slot it in (need to be the exact model. SLI only work if GPU match).

Also note the you need the 170w adapter as devour sifu mentioned.
The touchpad is not "problem". it is a "fact" that user have to adapt tongue.gif

<insert new Y series name here> with new Haswell core i7-4700MQ + GT750m(GDDR5) and longer battery life with optimus in MY.

Can anyone mind to share that, what is the meaning of battery life with optimus? what is optimus? sleep.gif
*
Nvidia Optimus - a solution from Nvidia that enable Nvidia GPU to kick in only when needed, otherwise laptop is running with Intel IGPU. As a result, this enable laptop to achieve longer running time with battery power, since Intel IGPU draw a lot less power.

Y510p m.2 port only has space to fit in a small capacity card (32G at most, iinm). You can try to install W7 on it tongue.gif
And that is on the premise that you could find a m.2 SSD card now tongue.gif
