is it their plan all along?
Sell cheap for awhile to poison us and then, raise the price after we are addicted?  hmm.gif

Y series won the market with "reasonable build quality" with "very competitive price/spec".
Now the former is stagnant, and the latter is disappearing ...

if my set is just single GPU, should I flash the bios or leave it as it is ?
*
if your unit is single GPU, it should run fine if you upgrade OS to W8.1. You may leave the vBIOS as it is if you don't want to take risk smile.gif

btw, if I use msata for cache & ssd as primary(os & program/games) will the loadin' b fazter?
*
No.
But if you have a laptop that support RAID on mSATA and SATA port, putting 2 same capacity SSD and run RAID 0 (beware of its pitfall) will give you crazy responsiveness laugh.gif

erk...
y400 doesn't support raid?
*
iinm, no.
(btw, when I said no earlier, I meant "mSATA SSD caching + SATA SSD" will not be faster than "SATA SSD only", ie if you go SATA SSD, there is no point keep using the mSATA SSD for caching, turn it to storage.)

Plenty of re-sellers selling Y410P at garage sales section. Go check price there.

QUOTE(Prothero @ Dec 18 2013, 03:11 PM)
Hi sifus,

After reviewing several laptops which are within my budget, I decided to purchase a Lenovo Y510p.

However, the default HDD that comes with the laptop is a 1TB HDD 5400 rpm.

With that kind of HDD, the booting time will be slow I presume.

So now I am interested to purchase another hard disk (SSD or SSHD) so that my windows can be installed there.

The thing is, I am not sure if I should purchase an SSD or SSHD. In my personal view, SSD is better in terms of booting time but the storage is so small. Meanwhile, SSHD is slower in terms of booting time but the storage is much bigger.

And another question is, will the Windows have no problem if I change the preinstalled Windows in the laptop which is installed in the 5400rpm hard disk and transfer the Windows to the SSD or SSHD that I will buy?

Hope some suggestions can be made of what I should do now.. Thanks

http://www.thessdreview.com/our-reviews/cr...d-review-480gb/

Crucial SATA m.2.
Should be available in early 2014.
This is probably the first retail available m.2 (only SATA, not PCIe) from SSD major brands.
The size seems to be too long for current Y series. (iinm, current Y510P only has space for 42mm m.2 )
Let's hope Lenovo do something more sensible for next round of Y series smile.gif
