Perhaps we are waiting for the right CB, beats me...areas we need strenghtening in particular - LB and CB, we manage to get past-his-prime toure...dont get me wrong, he might still be useful and competitive to put it bluntly..but not the sort of statement of intent most fans are expecting...instead we got ourself a mignolet...least that i expect...still remember when we signed dudek and kirkland for a combines fees of roughly 10million++,,altho dudek can claim credits for his heroic during CL..still there is lingering bad aftertaste from kirkland's deal which cost more but badly underutilize....pure waste of good money...liverpool havent had the rub of the green when i comes to keeper...we let go of friedel which turn out one heck of a keeper..legend in fact...the rest comes and go..into oblivion even - sander westerveld anyone...really hope that mignolet is an excellent contingency, its anyones guess....

With Mktryan and the whos the next CB deals shrouded in mystery...perhaps these are the areas of importance to BR,in which he kept it close to his chest..

I think mignolet is for the future.May be back up for now but reina is certainly gone by next summer.

Signing the likes of mhiktaryan/eriksen and a top cb to partner agger such as papa or alder will signal our intent for top4.

... in a position that doesn't really need strengthening lol.

Disagree with the earlier poster about our keepers, PR has been fantastic for us.

Valdez's contract should be expiring next summer, then there's a high chance that Reina will be back in Nou Camp. Didn't see anything wrong with bringing in a notable stopper a summer earlier in preparation for his departure.

maybe but perhaps it was more of the (adaption) system of play. Mainly the way the back begins when we have the ball esp under rodgers tactics.

he is definitely less protected by the way we organise from the past (2 defensive midfielder) but we have shown by shifting to a more attacking play.

Pepe is amongst the well paid athlete in lfc. on a hindsight getting the new keeper is more or less a precaution, should barca opts to cash in. the 2nd option is to provide reina some competition for one season. after which i'm pretty sure we'll sell reina.

its business for FSG.

Reina seems keen on leaving, and would definitely leave if Barca come knocking on our door.

And Mignolet has proved himself to be a very capable GK.

Simon Mignolet has become Liverpool’s latest signing in an ambitious summer spending spree, as Brendan Rodgers considers an audacious swoop for Gerard Deulofeu, the Barcelona forward.

Mignolet completed his £9 million transfer from Sunderland yesterday after passing a routine medical examination and finalising personal terms on a five-year contract.

The Belgium goalkeeper is Rodgers’s fourth signing in the past month after the acquisitions of Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Kolo Touré. Rodgers is now considering a move for Deulofeu, who scored 18 goals in 33 appearances for Barcelona B in the Spanish second division last season.
The 19-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in Spain, but is aware that his immediate prospects of playing first-team football are slim at the Nou Camp.

Deulofeu is understood to be keen to join a club who prioritise passing football in the event that he has to leave Barcelona, and fits the profile of player that Rodgers is keen to attract to Anfield.

Liverpool would be likely to face strong competition for Deulofeu if they decide to make a move for the teenager, but the presence of Alberto, with whom he enjoyed a productive partnership for Barcelona B, could be a trump card.

Liverpool are optimistic that a deal can be struck with Shakhtar Donetsk to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who has been warned by his club that he faces a fine after failing to return to pre-season training.

We have seen last season friedel vs lloris and de gea vs lindergaard. So, next season we can see magnolia vs reina

Thing is Friedel is in the twilight years of his career and would therefore be more accommodating to the idea of being replaced. Lindergaard was signed from Norway and should expect to have to earn his passage into the top flight. Also, with Denmark 2nd from bottom in their World Cup qualifying group, he may not have much to fight for. Both Pepe and Mignolet are established no.1's and both are currently no.2's in their respective national setups vying for the no.1 jersey.

I'm all for having two strong keepers. My concern is keeping both of them happy. I have this niggling feeling that the Pepe Reina transfer saga is far from over.

I'm not seen much of Mignolet bar youtube videos but I can say that Pepe is the sort of keeper who will thrive under our current system of play. His form was patchy early last season but he raised his game towards the end. I think Pepe is best playing behind a high defensive line. He isn't the biggest of keepers so he's likely to get swamped in a crowded penalty box. He is good with his feet and loves coming off his line so having acres of real estate in front of him is something he relishes I feel.

I'm still waiting for news of us being linked to a defensive midfielder. I think this is a key position for us more so under Rodgers where when the team pushes forward, the defensive midfielder takes up a central defensive slot, with both centrebacks pushing up wide. We were porous at the back last season and one reason for that was our inability to drop back fast enough whenever we lost possession. A Mascherano would be perfect given his experience playing in a back four with Barca.

Gerard Deulofeu?! shocking.gif That's one interesting prospect that I've follow closely. IMO, if we can land this kid then it's as good as we've made a "30 million" type of signing. Still I'm waiting for our next CB target to surface after Papa's deal seems to be put off recently.

The signing of Mignolet just shows that perhaps BR cannot forget this:
