take the hard disk out and use another machine to do the backup; clone it; or whatever.

well, good luck!

as a prevention, you might wanna take the photos of the laptop (whatever you can think of; side view, front view, top view, rear view, etc.) it's especially important to take notes on where the grills are exposed (rear view, vents, etc.)

this way you can check it out for external anomalies later.
