In Malaysia averagely I can save ~40% of my nett salary. Doubt I can do the same in Singapore. Hence my questions since I am not aware of the cost that people will incur in working there.
*
assume you can save 40% by living some off ur parents... but that probably saving 10% in sg is already more than 40% in myr rclxms.gif

Commodities trading is big here in SG, almost on par with Switzerland.

I also want to move into soft commodity trading eventually. The big ones here are Noble resources and olam but even Glencore, Trifugura, Bunge and such have a big presence here.

I was from a local bank doing trade finance, so i see their bills pretty often.
But in a midst of a job change now, moving into a bunker fuel trading firm.
Hope to be able to go into commodities trading though!

What do you want to do in a trading firm? Trading, finance, ops?
*
noble and olam in trouble.... lol, share prices drop so much...

KPI? brightoil? bp? sentek? sk? chemoil? exxon? global? transocean? hong fatt? universal?

bunker fuel is semi commodity what...

2 main func in a trading coy is trade n finance... ops is backroom stuff, waste of time... if your coy is a manufacturing coy, then maybe projects will be big too

It depends on your lifestyle. You only need less than 1500sgd for basic needs exclude car loan and house mortgage.
I can do nothing with my 50% saved in Msia. But I can achieve a lot with the 65% saved here. I know some friends who fly every weekend for backpacking or couchsurfing.

Share price dosent affect the fundamentals of the co ma.. I guess they're impacted by the low commodity prices now.

I don't know, I have a thing for soft commodities like grains, wheat, corn and such.. Hahaha!

I going into chemoil.. Are you in similar industry too?
*
it does, in terms of financing, the 2nd most important element of trading... those are trading companies, not upstream players, should not be affected so much... noble 'tried' to go upstream and put on assets, got burned bad... olam played with creative financing and bet on long term investments, kena muddy waters... doh.gif

landlord is in the wheat industry... i am in the rice+salmon @ sushi industry laugh.gif

chemoil ar? r u guys a jobber only? or have some form of processing?

QUOTE(ohserena @ Sep 13 2013, 12:50 AM)
Just found this very useful post about working in Singapore.

i believe the initial objective for this post is to provide/exchange information for singles/fresh grad/young professional who intends to work in Singapore.

My question here is: How about small family?
My husband and i both have a stable income job in Penang and Malaysia, distance is a b****, so we are thinking to find a location that both of us can work together, we have a baby. Is it difficult for look for job + nursery in Singapore? I asked a few opinions from friends and family, not to mention about securing a job first, having to find a good nanny and baby-friendly accommodation is already a headache.
My friend said single room not meant for mommies and babbies, i need to rent a whole apartment that's about SGD2k? (is it true?)
And i probably need to hire a nanny and get one of my family to come down to watch the nanny taking care of the baby....

I hope to gather some information here, especially if you are  a young family working in singapore, I appreciate your advice and opinion, thanks in advance.
*
nope, many new work places have childcare/nurseries... nanny to me is a nono in sg, either it would be too exp or the nanny wouldnt be good enough.. dont risk it

yea, even with master bedroom, it is too small and usually landlord/main tenant wont allow that... whole hdb apartment goes from 1.8k-3.8k/month

ermmm, if your kid is >7 months, probably leave d kid in msia with your parents? can ask jitsiong
