I saw a few companies got his letter also 2 months ago. Basically i told them to use BSA format and send back together with lampiran A. AND DO NOT SEND OUT SERIAL NUMBER. When during BSA time many years ago, they did not ask for serial number, but number of pc/ server & type of software only. Then yearly should submit same declaration of number of pc and software. We should follow it this way.

You should not give out serial number to them because it might be sold or given to pirates to make legitimate copies of your software. If you have original software, there is no need to be afraid of them come checking. You should have all the necessary windows stickers, office license and anti virus licenses ready if they drop in.

I do not have any idea why they need proof of purchase for. Check for stolen computer/ software? Tax the software/ hardware selling company? Tax for the units of computers in office?

If it was a scam, then u only provided not enough details for them to work with. If u provide number of pc and software (Which is enough for them to do a counter check) then you have nothing to fear. And NO serial number should be given. If they want, they should come and check, take pictures so we know who took it.

Giving out serial number to anyone/ anybody is already an offence to begin with. Being a Gov agency does not give u the right to take this also. Because seriously if i were a big time pirate and have links to that agency that is collecting serial numbers, i could repack and sell a genuine copy of any software already. Most software companies already know of such tactics of selling stolen serial numbers. rclxub.gif

Company should only give out serial numbers during Microsoft audit, when dealing directly with Microsoft personnel, not other people.

Newspaper cut out from nanyang on 18/06/2013.

This thing is definitely real. The question is, to what extend can they carry out the audit? 20,000 companies? Just how much human power and time do you need to check every 20k company?

Secondly, how deep will they dig into your pcs? Companies these days use so many software these days: ms office, adobe, autocad etc. Will they seriously look at every single software installed on your pc?

It would be helpful if any member can share your experience if you have been audited before.

It's easy. Just like BSA they will stick thumbdrive into the pc and it will scan the registry and program files folder for any trace of pirated software. It will take a couple of minutes to scanand print out a report.

So far it is only 1 or 2 companies reported being caught right this year ? to check over 20,000 will take many years.

Checking companies from reports is much easier than checking from companies A-Z. If u have a business, go legal less the stupid worries of getting raided and fined. Might as well just worry about finding more money.

For those that already email them the serial keys and proof of purchased, wondering what they going to do with it.
Ignoring them, but there are still ten of thousands unaware of it.

Guys for your information, the letter is real.

I been receive this kind of letter since year 2012/2013

On 2012
- They just request stated what ever license you have and how many PC you have.
(Do not ever ever give your license key)

On 2013
- The will send you a reminder to do audit.

Do not worry, as long you all use original software, nothing to worry.

2 Kind of scenario:

1. If BSA or Supplier(without enforcement people) claim they want to do checking.
- Do ask for Court Warrant.

If no warrant, please ignore them, they don't have any right to access your premises.
If you allow them come in and found pirate software, they will give some dateline to purchase back the software.

2. If BSA with enforcement people and court warrant, you have no choice to allow them to do a search. (Someone is reporting with evident).

Best practice is do software audit every 6 month.

What to do when they come over:
1. Inventory List
2. Licenses available
3. Invoice

With all this is good enough, and please do not give your admin password to them.

By the way they will visit with vendor (microsoft or autodesk) with their legal team.
