My field of work requires a lot of intensive research, analysis and survey (among others) which led me to this piece of information: perfume gifting. It was very popular way back in the late 90s - early 2000 whereby perfume was topping the gift list, as well as wish list. Still very popular till today especially as Chrismas gifts, way beyond as the Valentine's gifts. Ok, I admit, the number one Christmas gift is still toys and FYI, flowers (not only roses) and chocolate are the top two Valentine's gifts.

My question is: what is your thought on perfume gifting? I used to give perfume as Christmas gift until my wife told me not to anymore; she has far too many bottles that can last her for a few centuries. I can understand why: because to her, or a non-perfume collector, you are supposed to finish a bottle before you proceed to procure another one. Why? It is due to the perceived value of the perfume - applying something 'invisible', only visible to your nose, and cost a little hole to the wallet (or purse). It is not something that any layman can understand and appreciate.

I do have to agree with you on this. After all, x'mas presents are mostly gifted to children. I think it all started when baby Jesus was gifted gold, frankincense and myrrh by the three wise men before the Santa Claus story took over. Growing up as a Christian, receiving a x'mas present was the happiest thing for me.
There are still a lot of things you can choose to gift for your loved ones other than perfumes. I would do the same too if I were in your position. The main reason I chose perfume as gift is that my mom was a perfume user (who isn't now) and my wife isn't. As a noob fumehead, I wanna gift them the best/appropriate perfume to the best of my knowledge and budget. I want them to enjoy and love wearing fragrances like I do to justify my constant fragrance purchases. Okay, the part about justifying purchases was a joke biggrin.gif

Being born in an old-fashioned, fourth generation Catholic family, toys are a luxury when I was young, and only be given on special occasion like Christmas. I tried to practice the same towards my little princess but failed tremendously.

Houses with a sample policy that isn’t on their website:
Frederic Malle – If you phone the NY store, they will send you three samples of your choice for a handling fee of $20.
Serge Lutens – If you email them, write them, or phone them, they will send you a ‘book’ of their wax samples (Petit Livre des Salons) and possibly a spray sample of a current scent. (They’ve been very accommodating on two occasions for me but some have not had luck, fyi.)
Robert Piguet – If you email them, they will send you any samples of your choice for $3 each + $15 shipping.
Hermes – If you send them a thoughtful email, they will send you any sample you ask for (though I’ve heard they’re more helpful in North America than in Europe).
In all these cases, the stores will be most accommodating if you sound like you intend to buy. Keep that in mind when you craft your email/call.
When you can’t get sample sets directly from the house, these are the options:

Tried it at Tangs a couple of days ago. I get some pine and some incense. Quite interesting but wears close to skin.

Tangs at Orchard Road? You are absolutely right about it being very close to skin.

Yeah. Tangs at Orchard Road.

For those looking to try/buy Tauer Perfumes in Singapore, the only two stores that carried it may have ceased operation. All I saw were empty lots :-
- Blackmarket @ #02-10, Orchard Central shopping mall
- Hide & Seek @ 71, Bussorah Street near Bugis Junction

No wonder the numbers that I called earlier are not in service.
*
I didnt know Hide & Seek have ceased operations. I was there early 2013 and they carried quite a number of niche houses like Histoires de Parfums, Mona di Orio & Etat Libre d'Orange.

SOTN - complicated, I got LIDGE, Chaz Bond and Riverside Drive by Bond No 9. Yeah, i was haunting those SAs at The Parkson, Pavilion. My fav? LIDGE. Smoky, masculine and sexy.

To my untrained nose, Chaz Bond smells very similar to Amyris by MFK.
