HI all, I am a graduate in Electrical and Electronic. I have been working for 2 years already. My job scope is software base, using C programming. I would say, it is more to firmware engineering. The problem now is, if I want to move on, I do not know whether the skills I have now is sufficient for me or not.
What if I change field, back to hardware or production? Will my pay be cut down as well? Current salary is 3k plus.
Really doubtful about the my job scope here and also the needs of the current market.
Thanks.

In engineering profession, switching discipline is rather hard without sacrifice in salary as your experience and skillsets are not much useful of the discipline that you want to join. At least from my experience can tell me. But the fact is if you think you are more interested in hardware or production (<- Are you sure?), can you can guaratee that after you join?

Sometimes you need to gamble to find happiness. If you are bored because of been doing the same thing again and again or can't seems to solve problems that other co-workers related to you, then changing the industry will be a temporary tranquility. after you have completed your first cycle in your new job, you will be back to square one ie. having the same boring sensation.
The best is to do what you like to do best. sometimes in life, we need to take chances that seems to not work in the beginning, but all in all, it is the decision of what you want be that important.

The thing in engineering is until you actually do the job yourself, not listening explanation from the experienced people, it is hard to know whether you do really "like" it.

What kind of device do you do firmware on?? Do you know finite state machine?? This is a great area!!! If you are bored of doing stuff in your current company, you could always do firmware for something else. Nowaday, there are about 35 procesors in a car and they are putting processor in washing machines and so on.. Dreamer This post has been edited by dreamer101: Apr 25 2006, 06:51 PM

Yeah. Real time OS. My job scope does not touch a single thing on hardware (hardware layer stuff). I am doing the interfacing of the hardware and user interface. Ya Finite state machine stuff. Not bored with colleague but sometimes, i felt that I believe a engineering line does not stop here. I want to explore more because the market out there requires. Nope to production and testing. I prefer RnD. But it is kinda hard to find in KL. I'm in Penang by the way. Dreamer, is firmware engineering having a good future?

Dreamer, is firmware engineering having a good future? I still do not understand why you cannot find a job in R&D with firmware engineering experience?? What industry do you work in? Firmware engineering is fairly portable across multiple industries. You could be working on designing test equipment, telecom equipment, automotive and so on... In fact, any kind of equipment with embedded processor is sort of open area for you. There are so many opportunities out there for you. Even if you are in Penang. What kind of RTOS do you use?? What kind of processor do you use?? Dreamer

In house processor i guess. I didnt really touch the processor. Not using Assembly though which is my fav subject in uni. Ive got a lot of colleague who came from KL also; namely from Japanese company like JVC and Panasonic. Yea, so which means any embedded software I can work in? Nope harrychoo, Not Altera but the one next to it
