Well, first of all, people need to understand that single threaded speed tests to a server located ~20000km away are a very bad way of measuring the capability of one's connection.

First and foremost because this is very rarely representative of actual usages. If you use any popular service such as google, facebook, twitter, etc. They all rely on CDNs to deliver their content so you never actually hit their main server, but instead a cache sitting nearby. Secondly, your web browser can make 6 to 8 concurrent network connections to a single server, so you can imagine how relevant a single threaded test is (i.e. it's not).

And on top of that, testing against such a distant server will introduce many variables outside of the control of your internet provider, so cut them some slack, they don't own the world's backbone and TCP/IP has never been designed to be fast: it's designed to guarantee the packets will reach their destination, even if they have to take a longer route to get there.
