Which pathways should a law student take to be easier getting into big law firms in Malaysia after graduated?

Hello, I actually have several questions regarding law degree & the career paths, I'll try my best to explain myself & if you're in the law field, your advice will be a huge help!

1. Currently starting the first semester in UKT in BAC. I actually searched up many online forums and information regarding the big legal firms in Malaysia. Some ppl commented that big law firms mostly recruit students graduated from UK and BPTC, while others commented that the big law firms are also aware of the difficulty of CLP. What are your perspectives on this?

2. I was planning to do UOL but studying UKT saves me one academic year as there was no January intake of UOL in BAC. The next UOL intake would be in September. I would go for UKT only if I got scholarships (I was left behind but I study very hard now), or else I would switch to UOL in Year 2. My question is whether UKT or UOL first-class honour is more valuable in the eyes of the prestigious law firms in recent years?

3. Also, could you please share some working/ studying experience in the legal profession? Your sharing will definitely help out a lot!

If you're experienced in law field/ graduated/ currently studying/ a lawyer/ legal practitioner, your advice would benefit me a lot! Thanks in advance.

1. I wouldn't say that it makes that much of a difference. If you're good, firms would want you regardless of BPTC/CLP. Although one aspect to be aware of is the graduation time, BPTC ends their courses earlier, then local grads followed by CLP students. So by the time CLP students get their results and start applying, pupillage spots at popular firms would have been filled up. One way to negate this if you take CLP would be to apply earlier, even before you sit for your exam and try to get a conditional offer instead.

2. Not sure if this is true but the word on the street is that a first class in UOL is more difficult to obtain compared to a first class in UKT. I wouldn't place too much reliance on the comparison between the two although a 2:1 seems to be the minimum requirement for some firms. If you go the the firms' website and go through the list of associates, you will see that they are from various universities. I would imagine a firm will want to look beyond your certificate and look more into your personality to determine if you are a good fit for them.

3. I think if you are prepared to work long hours then you're off to a good start.

Yes it's possible.

I know of mature students who did part time degree and later CLP.

There is definitely memorization involved.

What's more important is the ability to apply what you learned to a given scenario.

I see you have asked a number of questions here related to law. Which stage are you actually in now? You have asked questions pertaining to chambering and now you are asking about enrollment to LLB.

anyone knows or took masters in law without doing a degree in law beforehand? i went to ask BAC, they don't allow. though i told them why not give me a try, if i fail in first semester, then remove me. if i can pass, then just let me continue. but they still ask me to do degree 3 years with them first. i plan to do part time weekends or weekdays after working hours for this master in law.
