Some poison for RoadBike. rclxms.gif

Frequently Asked Question on what kind of bikes to get:

1) Aluminum bike - 10 speed Tiagra (maybe mixed Tiagra - Sora), priced around RM3k up- this would be the absolute lowest point i would say to start from... any lower and you will land outside of 10speed equipment and any upgrades will certainly be more than the difference you saved not buying this bike.. shimano launched tiagra with 10speed beginning of this year making this a considerable choice... also, this grade of bike will have a more common grade of cockpit (handlebar, stem, seat post, saddle) and cheaper wheels

2) Aluminum bike - 10 speed 105 (maybe mixed 105 - Tiagra), priced around RM3.8k up- most likely the same frame above with a different paint livery, this would be an entry level into shimano's definition of competition components... tiagra would be what they called the top tier among the enthusiast group.. although both 10 speed... but materials and feel... tiagra has a shift indicator while the 105 does not hence giving you a pro feel (what the bike shop will tell you)...mostly.. tiagra has a bit more plasticky bits than 105... some slightly more expensive models might even start offering slightly better wheels like mavic aksiums along with better slightly better graded cockpit...

- i would not try and go past 105 on a aluminum bike... the best brands like specialized or bmc will be selling an aluminum bike equipped with 105 for a little over RM5k... going 1 notch up into ultegra will lead you to start looking into higher end bikes as those bikes will surely creep past RM6k and most likely a mismatch between frame and component grades... you will be practically trying to pair a set of RAYS CE28N onto a Perodua Myvi if you get what i mean in car terms...

3) Carbon bike - 10 speed 105 (possibly not full 105), priced around RM7k up- this would be a foray into performance bicycles... although a carbon frame... but this are not the best carbon has to offer for 2 reasons... carbon cloth grade (less modulus, less weave, lower grade binding agents) and the man power / time needed (less complex layup schedules) to layup the carbon layers into producing a frame... basically a mass produced frame with the lowest production cost possible... not all that bad... it should still be on par if not better with the best of the aluminum frames in terms of stiffness.. basically, component should be similar or slightly better than the aluminum 105 bike depending on the price you pay...

- here i would name one which shocked me quite a bit recently... saw this Look 566...this http://www.lookcycle.com/en/int/route/velo...-bike-2013.html , but i guess a previous year model...... carbon frame with Mavic Aksium wheels... not a complete 105 with some downgraded cranks and calipers... a carbon frame with comfort geometry retailing for RM7.1k if my memory serves me right...

- price is slightly high for some people... but if you look at it...maybe under 30% more if you are looking at a Apex or 105 equipped Specialize Allez

4) free for all - death - bankruptcy - you name it...
- step into this and there will be no return...

Beside on the modern roadbike, there's also classic roadbike that worth to consider, if you're classic roadbike lover.

at best, this is considered a classic remake...

with columbus tubing at least... if there is any chance that anyone still makes a bike with reynolds 531 tubing, even better...

it has to be small round tubes and lugged in order to qualify as classic...

if my bike size is bigger than 50 i would have to wait two months for it. but trek has a 54 waiting for me. D:
*
size 50 vs size 54 really big gap.

have u find out what size suite u? read below. A good bike shop wont simple push u to buy a bike that doesnt fit u.

but still there's many do so. hope ur shop is honest one.

i dunno... i think the internet is so big and there is so many things to watch over....furthermore, each of us have different expectations on cycling groups... some wants lots of chicks to ride with, some want extreme sadomasochisticly fast group rides... some wants rides where there is lots of crazy extreme bikes that makes no sense.....it is hard to post the right thing... tats why we always recommend the power of google to do that...

we'll get out of our c0cking mood once some serious topic turns up... else, we jus post nonsense for most of the time jus to humor ourselves...call it syiok sendiri, we don't care...

or jus use baikbike.com lah (add a bit of malaysia flair to it)

lemme convert this track back to it's righteous path....

Would it be better to go for alu or entry level carbon then?

you need to tell us about urself.

budget got already RM5k. does it just for bike only or include accessories.

mind you, you need to get cycling wears, helmet, bike meter, clip pedal, clip shoe etc etc...

so its important you tell us ur goal. ur cycling goal. what you wish to achieve in 2 years time...

ok, you can start with A/S/L. thumbup.gif

Actually I'm just asking on behalf of my partner. He's 33. 192cm and 115kg. He intend to do cycling as workout. His friends and cousins cycle too. Supposedly want to go bike shopping this weekend but will be grateful for any pointers and feedback from more active cyclist here.
*
Polygon have a good selection of flat bar bikes around RM1-2k. rest of money can invest in accessories ie. stand pump, hand pump, helmat, in this case, clip shoe clip pedal not required, cycling pant, cycling jersey, a good sunglasses, bike meter.

cycle is 1 thing, look good also another important thing.

waits, ur partner friend and cousins never poison ur partner??? ish ish.... this is not how cycling community works!

we poisons each other.

Hi actually they poison him terribly. Brand like Time. Ducati. Argon. Look. But we prefer not to spend so much so that's why seek external advice. They said Polygon out but no give reason.

Some say my partner is tall. Frame hard to find. Better get expensive frame from start so no need upgrade frame, only parts. Justification is my partner tall, big bike less resale value. Harder to sell. Others say start small. Get normal bike and upgrade as he goes. What's your advise?

Noticed front page got put price range. That will help.
*
have you and your partner ever visited any bike shop? Visit few bike shops, and you will be able to identify which is good which is just pushing to sell.

walk into bike shop with clear intention on ur purpose of bike and budget.

A good sales person will explain to you accordingly (which you will be hardly find nowadays) most of people walk into bike shop with homework and research done at home.

Polygon is from Indonesia and in other's mind it's no match with brands u mention above. Thus no reason needed. death penalty.

there's many thoughts on a bike.

For some, they know their path, race intention, thus they get the high end carbon bike and no future upgrades needed.
For some, they dont know how much they will likes cycling, thus they get entry aluminium level bike.
For some, they know they likes cycling, but dont know how far, how sustain they able to be in cycling, they get mid level aluminium bike with 105 spec.

beside that, an after sale service from a bike shop also important.

We not able to put price on front page as the prices of a bike can range from hundreds until many many thousand.

btw, not yet buy a bike already thinks of its resell value? rclxub.gif this wont be helping you in getting a bike.
