Hi guys, sorry to change the subject, just a quick question/survey...
I read somewhere that when your car is stationery at the traffic light waiting for green light, changing gear to N (neutral) is an advisable way to preserve longevity of your gearbox/prevent wear and tear. Is everyone here doing that? Some quarters said it is not good to do it, as if you are not careful, you end up hurting it more when you don't give it anough time to engage when your lights turn green and you hastily switch it to D,?! I know my NA gear is 4 speeder AL4 while Turbo is AT6, but from how I understand it, that doing it is advisable for any car (but I have read this sometime back, so not sure it apply for those DSGs too), Any Feedback? |

QUOTE(jfcheong @ Feb 26 2013, 02:29 PM) All the while I engage to N at traffic light. Just bcoz I lazy to hold the brake with my right leg Hi Bro, apology actually missed your comments coz scroll too fast...the guy who told me it can hurt if shift back to D too fast was a mechanical & electrical engineer, so it created my dilemma of leaving it at D or Neuralize it when stationary...Those thing u mentioned earlier does make sense also, imagine ur car start accelerate before the gear box catch in the correct gear/ position, might hurt your gear box. It will be great to wait for maybe 0.5 second for the gear to hunt in correct position before release your brake pedal? Just my comment... Btw, I like your new avatar! Nice avatar? Yes when i saw it just this morning I can't help liking it instantaneously either. Our Lion holding Renault as Shield and Citroen as spear , shows who is the real boss, rite???!! QUOTE(SKYjack @ Feb 26 2013, 06:17 PM) The AL4 had those problems. On older gb when you engage/disengage gears, solenoid valve is energized/de-energized. This cycle if too frequent tends to shorten life span of solenoid valve and eventual gb failure. This has been rectified with our technically improved gbs. Btw the gb on the NA is AT8. AT8? Then why my gearbox show AL4??See pic Attached thumbnail(s) |

QUOTE(jfcheong @ Feb 26 2013, 06:44 PM) OIC, my memory is going downhill lately...sigh.... It is a sign of ageing Gee, if that the case Nasim is guilty of using old al4 gear box casing then ? Aiyo another cheat. Grrrr.... What I meant there is stop traffic light shift to N then daydream n then light turns green. Car at back honked. Wake up from day dream. Shift to D quickly n accelerate, the last bit too fast /hastily done, click clack cluck, even the sound scream out "hey dude , handle me with care" |

QUOTE(clayton-chew @ Feb 26 2013, 10:04 PM) Guys, have been driving peugeot 408 2.0 for about 3 months now (gf's car). I find that the brake even after service + repair for 3 times, it still make the squeaky sound when braking slowly or when reverse + brake. Did anyone encounter this? The car is only 4 months old. If I may say so, I think your gf has good taste, that is why she choose u? I also find that the light sensor and rain sensor are not that reliable at times. The silicon wipers I got them replaced twice! because after awhile, they do not wipe off the rain that effectively. I notice that Peugeot is designed solely for left side drivers, do you notice when you engage the gear, you could not see which one you engage to? and also the wiper movements priorities the left side more than the right side when it should be the other way round. Another thing I realise that peugeot 408 2.0 suspension is really flimsy (the car will wobble hard when sudden movement), not sure if is for comfort, but I much prefer steadier suspension like mazda, volkwagen or bmw. Overall, it's a good car. Big size, powerful engine and sporty look, however FC-wise, it's below average, full tank = RM100 = 400km +/-. Not really good. Being an NA owner myself, I have not encountered squeaky brake prob so far, however when it gets wet, yes it is there, but it is the same for all car's disc brakes system, am told. Just try to run them dry after washing or after going through puddle of water/rains, etc. if u want to stop them completely you can try bring 4 table fans, and fan all 4 wheels pointing at the brakes, to quickly dry them but i never try them, so don't know if will work. My Light sensor and rain sensor is so far 90% accurate, the 10% is really sometimes, it takes a wee bit longer to activate, but that is fine for me as I am a patient man (once you upgrade from Bf-gf to Hubby Wifey status, u too will improve your patience I believe) care to elaborate what do u mean wiper not wipe off rain effectively? Pug is designed for LHD, but u can see which gear you engage still from display in front of you, don't just see it from gear box ? Suspension of 2.0 is comfortably set (nice as opposed to naughty) hence it is fitted with higherprofile tyres than Turbo , and the trade off is in comparison with Mazda, VW, or bimmer , it is more floaty per se. FC ? well one thing is 4 speeder Gear, another is the curb weight, so I only compare them to perhaps other 2.0 NA with 4 speeder of close similar curb weight, and afraid that combi makes it quite hard to compare with other seg C because the weight is almost a D seg car...I accept it as trade off for VERY ROOMY CAR (wheel base >2700 mm) This post has been edited by EnergyAnalyst: Feb 27 2013, 11:43 AM |

QUOTE(zweimmk @ Feb 28 2013, 09:42 AM) That's true. SOUNDS right to me Have you seen their drive for the speakers? It's no bigger than a 20 cent coin, and the cone itself is made from paper, you're lucky if it's plastic. Damn lucky if it's made of MDF material, lol. Most C-segment Japanese cars have really awful audio systems. Even the latest Camry audio system is quite nasty, but the ones powering the D-segments K5 and the new Mazda 6 are both quite good. |

QUOTE(SKYjack @ Feb 28 2013, 11:34 AM) That's good wishful thinking and hope so too. However reality is, I don't think Peugeot or for that matter any conti will match up to SEGs reliability la. Contis are built on a different platform, they constantly push the boundary limits. That's what makes these cars perform excitingly. The use of electronics is at a very high level. Electronics bring about great accuracy but don't have the life span of mechanical units. Our Pug is loaded with electronics and electrotonically operated units. agree, that is a more reasonable and possibly achievable HOPEI would be very glad for trouble free engine and gearbox. Later on when needed, if parts were at reasonable price. , |

QUOTE(lowpro @ Mar 4 2013, 09:16 AM) Well, if they can't be like mercedes (3rd place after Honda & Toyota), I would have expect to see them at least NOT IN THE BOTTOM 10 out of 36. Honestly, I don't see a reason to rejoice, I would expect more from BMW (30th/36) & MINI (34th/36), VW (28th of 36) & Audi (35th of 36!!!)To not have the reliability of Japs is OK, but to be so OUT PACED? is another. Peugeot's favoruite Prince engine has BMW's DNA, which is not exactly comforting to know this news too. Now, that leaves all potential conti purchasers in further dilemma, if I cannot afford a Jaguar, Porsche, Mercedes or Volvo but is damn frust with Japs car and no more fancy one, what does that leaves them? Koreans? I wonder how did they score? |

QUOTE(zweimmk @ Mar 4 2013, 01:09 PM) Wow! Look at the top 10 marques! 6 out of 10 are Japanese, 2 belongs to the American, 1 is Korean and the final is a VW subsidiary brand. Do u mean that you find it comfotable that Skoda is 10th place and VW is 23rd place? Also, would consumer find it acceptable that in their(VW's) drive to become the world no.1 car manufacturer by volume, no doubt they have let slip on some quality issues. But their volume of cars sold also easily 2x/3x/4x even compared to some of their continental rivals. 'If the manufacturing defect is set at 0.05% of the total volume of cars sold, that number would also scale accordingly to their total volume of cars sold. Hence, the result is nothing new nor surprising at all.', Can VW even use that as a sorry excuse for their poorer reliability performance?Truthfully, many VW owners have also complained about the drop in VW quality. In their drive to become the world no.1 car manufacturer by volume, no doubt they have let slip on some quality issues. But their volume of cars sold also easily 2x/3x/4x even compared to some of their continental rivals. If the manufacturing defect is set at 0.05% of the total volume of cars sold, that number would also scale accordingly to their total volume of cars sold. Hence, the result is nothing new nor surprising at all. Oddly enough, SKODA sits in the top 10, that's quite unexpected considering that its DNA is essentially VW. Sad but true, if you wanted something reliable and dependable - The Japanese are still the ones to look at. Yes, granted that you have the dough to buy a bimmer, an Audi, would you not seeing this turn your attention to say, Mercedes? I mean honest doesn't this bother you? http://www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/339 score 162 for Passat http://www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/234 score 147 for Pug 407 (the predecessor of 508) http://www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/64 score 142 for Citroen C5 http://www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/95 score 62 for Ford Mondeo (The UK Reliability index takes into account all factors of a repair, the cost of the parts and the frequency of failures - The Average of all cars is 100 which means that if the figure for the car you are looking at has a higher than average index (118) it indicates that that car is less reliable than the average, if however there is a lower than average index (60) the reliability is better.) QUOTE(zweimmk @ Mar 4 2013, 02:56 PM) I find it very surprising that Skoda is actually in the top 10 list instead of VW. Otherwise, I'm not bothered. good for you ! i just tot that we will expect better reliability from VW than what I can sum up now as below average and people paying so much for it (least in Msia they do).The more reliable the car is, the better. But if I were to buy a car solely based on that decision alone, I wouldn't have bought the Passat last year. I would have just opted to go for the Camry instead. If you had followed the 2012 New Toyota Camry thread, it was one of the few issues I was agonizing over when I decided to look for a new ride last year. So why did you buy a P408NA in the first place if you wanted a reliable and dependable ride? The more obvious choice are the Japanese isn't it? They are no.1 when it comes to reliability and dependability. As a consumer, I buy a car, I expect it to work when I use it. If problem happens, I expect them to fix the problem when I bring it to them and honor the warranty. I can moan and b**** about it all I want too, but the important thing is to get it fixed in a reasonable time frame and then I'd be satisfied. Throw in some free service vouchers or discount for my troubles and I would be even happier. What I say about VW quality dropping due to their drive to become no.1 is just an opinion on my part. But you can probably put 1 and 1 together based on the number of automotive news that's circulating about them and you would also come to the same reasonable conclusion as well. In reality, they would never admit any drop in quality either for obvious reasons. Like it or not, they are outselling all of their continental rivals and doing so with very healthy profit as well. You can draw your on conclusion why that is the case. Btw, I'm done my homework when I bought my car, and I'm fully prepared to deal with it whatever that may or may not happen. But in the meantime, I will just enjoy my car, doesn't have to get anymore complicated than that |
