Found this stuck to my gate earlier today....looks like TM is offering SDSL in my area. Anyone used SDSL before? (upload speed = download speed).

Last Dec in post #1762, I had written about my line behaving strangely at specific times. My guess then was they were testing to see if my area could take a higher speed...methinks it passed the tests. Forumer rhytion also reported an increase in his SNR...perhaps his area was being tested too. IMO THIS should have been our "surprise" thank you gift in the first place.....dream on, andy...dream on.

You could be right. Maybe it's thru fiber...at this juncture I'm not certain what medium is the last mile delivery for this package. For the time being, I'm not going to even inquire into it. TM has stated in their FAQ that those "surprise" gifts were not the be-all and end-all.



Lets see what else they're gonna surprise us with. Am not gonna hold my breath.

Yes it's landed, and I really really have no idea how the last mile is done bro. The only fiber involved in my life is the kind which makes it easy and fast in the washroom

When I saw that the upload speed = download, the first thing I thought of was symmetrical dsl. I guess it's just unifi fiber...the black cables with yellow line running along the length have been strung up here.

Yeah they're probably targeting Streamyx users who can't or won't pay more (like me) for the faster unify packages, I guess. Till today I have yet to see a single black/yellow cable going into a house on my street, so I guess I'm not alone. This is a poorfag/cheapskate neighborhood

Yesterday I chanced across a TM technician and asked him about the black n yellow cables. He said they're fiber optic cables...so I believe u r right!

No scam...but I have a crappy ping time today.



Not to say yr installer is totally wrong too. When streamyx 4mbps was first offered in my town, TM point staff told me that I couldn't upgrade from 1mbps to 4mbps because my address was over 5km between 2 exchanges. FML!

Fast forward a few years. A TM technician told me they were installing "boosters" to my area. I dunno what that "booster" is, but about 2 months later I could upgrade to 4mbps on the Blockbuster package and life was better.

Fast forward 4+ more years. TM installed new grey cabinets, changed wooden telephone poles to cement, replaced the copper wiring and I was offered 8mbps for RM160 nett (GST had yet to be introduced). I didn't bite. Fast forward a few more years, price dropped to RM140 + GST for 8mbps and I subscribed to 8mbps in Aug 2016. Then TM added those black and yellow cables to my area. I was offered 5mbps with free upgrade to 10mbps, and recently offered unifi 30mbps. Am not biting.

My IP address now starts with 10.

Very erratic. Ranges from no network (red x) to crippled duck (triangle with exclamation mark) to full-blown speed (green circle with white checkmark)

If your house wiring/modem/various cables are fine, then it may just be that TM is changing stuff around in your area.

I used to have bouts of instability that lasted 30min to 2 hrs at regular intervals. The first octet of my IP address ranged from 106 to 172, 175 and up to 220. Was being bounced from address to address like a ping pong ball.

Then last week i noticed that my IP address started with 10. , and that address didn't change till today. I no longer had a dynamic public IP address. Am no networking expert, but I believe I have been given a static private IP address. That's bad if u want other computers to "see" u online and communicate with your pc. The upside is my connect is rock-solid stable now. I have yet to try enabling IPv6 to see if that'll give me back a public dynamic IP address.

A short while after I posted that, I saw them digging up the underground power cables for the 3rd or 4th time this year, pumping out water and splicing cables. I decided to wait and see. After they finished, my connect was rock-solid and at full speed. Guess the TM cabinets were getting bad and intermittent power due to water damage.

And yes I'm still sucking on thumbs and toes waiting for some reward offer from TM ...but I'm not holding my breath or feeling optimistic about it.

You may find some improvement if u experiment with the following:

Try Google DNS or Open DNS instead of TM's DNS
If you're on IPV6, try flipping over to IPV4 (or vice-versa)
Try viewing youtube on Google Chrome...it seems to be faster at times than Firefox in my past experiences.
Got any wardrivers/cheapskate neighbors leeching off yr wifi? Secure yr network and change the pw.

I'm no networking expert...that's all I can think of to help u.

If we upgrade from 8mbps to Unifi Lite now, we'll be locked in for 2 yrs at RM129/149+GST.

Assuming your info for 2018/19 pricing is correct, we'll be squeezing balls while others are paying much lower prices

Yup...that's what I was thinking. Will be inquiring on the availability of Unifi Lite 10 this week.
