not good...you wrap the under part of the HDD with the soft sponge (don't know proper name) which is blocking heat from dissipating from the chips.

ermm my suggesion is not on top but bottom, i have an external hard disk case and 250gb hd inside, and running over night the hd is super duper hot ( 70-75'C i think, cant even put your hand on it for 2 seconds )
and from that exprience, the bottom of HD is more hot ( the body not the electronics chip board side ) but its hard to and may be not that good to put heatsink there cause 1. scare short curcuit the electronics chip board 2. most of the HD body is come with pattern, so wont have flat surface to put your heatsink |

its a good idea but instead of mounting it like that y not just mount it like normal?? itll be better as heat moves upward.... and i see in the UV thread u have a fron intake fan...thatll already help with the cooling...
and like abubin said...the spongge will only block heat from dissipating from the chips. more dangerous actually. so my suggestion is to take off the sponge and just mount it the way its supposed to be in the case. the front intake fan will help move fresh air over the top heatsinks and also help move air below the hdd and help cool the chips at the bottom oh yeah....did u use any thermal tape/paste? itll work even better if u did... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() erm, this is what i did, just a huge chunk of heatsink to put onto my HDD, havent applied any thermal paste yet. the bottom part is hotter because the motor is located on the bottom of the frame, so if heat dissipation on top is faster, it can absorb the heat from bottom up. ps : look out at my siggy as i will sell them soon!!! cheap and practical solution |

Jus put a 80mm fan under the hdd..the black part where the motor is..ur hdd will plunge to room temp...u better remove tht sponge..its very bad...tht under part was specifically designed to dissipate heat which explains its uneven bottom painted wif black..a good colour for heat dissipation.

I've seen a lot of case modders mount drives vertical using acrylic...they would bent the acrylic to form a U like stucture..turn it upside down..mount the drive to the side wif screws. The silver top facing towards the acrylic

Does it really help with big heatsink on the top of HDD
as far i being doing HDD cooling i realised the best is u have a nice 12CM fan blowing through the HDD with cool air outside of case...... it can cool down HDD by at least 5c .. and the top surface is always slightly warm only ....while the bottom would be a little warmer than top ... btw im using Sata2 250GB idle and peak temp is 45 to 48 ..... last time when using 80GB ...better I=31 P=36 but there was two same HDDs now only use single HDD for best cooling so does it really help to have heatsink on top of HDD... or better have it and a nice fan blowing cool air through This post has been edited by Doom: Mar 25 2006, 10:31 AM |

hmm i like the idea of putting a huge heatsink on the top , & couldt we mount a heatsink below the hdd aswell with proper thermal tapes and paste to make sure no short circuit ( mind my spelling) and a 120mm or 80mm from the front intake to blow air directly on it ... and btw try to put the heatsink on the side of the hdd where you screw them and then use the heatsink at the side to connect the hdd to the casing ( i dunno u ppl understand or not) as the side of the hdd is quite hot also and could by cooling this part its really srops the temp alot

Spacing it greatly reduces heat...currently i wasn't using front intakes anymore but i put 1 at the top of the rack and the other at the lowest the ide can reach...my hdd runs under 40 degrees

erh...u need a lil excercise and get ur butt off the PC?
Dunno why you guys all like to make your life so difficult weih. One 120MM fan, blasting in front of your hardrives make your life much easier and frankly, I think that's the only thing you need. However, heatsinks from your old Pc's make a good extra but are they REALLY necesarry? Servers don't got big ass heatsinks sticking onto they top. They stack all the HDD's on top of each other, big fan blowing and they're done. Noisy tho...hmm |

Noisy tho...hmm hey man this is a moding forum ok. so what if we like to mod ehh atleast got some originality.. if everyone use normal ways then whats the point of modding.... k guys im curently designing a hdd rack that can fit three but i recomend two hdd's that are mounted like in the gigabyte aurora (sideways.) and is made from acrlic.... a fan blows over the hdd's sideways... if u don't get wat i mean, wait for my worklog coming soon in the forum k.... ill also make more if u guys are interested.. i found a shop willing to bend the acrilic and cut it for me..... for dam cheapo...now im designing it( smalll details need to be ironed out ..nedd to be perfect ,soon ill finish.... pm me if ure interested to buy it ill find out the price soon |

wanna look at my solution ??
![]() ![]() 2x heatsinks sandwiched 3x HDD, i put thermal paste on the sides of the HDD. and a very low speed 92mm fan blowing in front.... it helps to lower the temperature a lot man...the heatsink is slightly warm only. |

you'll go deaf when you try to sleep with your pc on. nidec? cause triblade and practical. i have a delta focus flow 190cfm one. that one is a screamer. still sitting on the shelf waiting to be used. problem is. nidec can perform good cfm below 1 amp. and that deltai have is 3amp. so try its a power sucker

QUOTE(Vervain @ Jul 14 2006, 03:52 PM) my cheapest idea. can tiru tiru la. no need to modify, just chuck in a powerful fan and you're good to go. as for the delta FFBs, try and check if they can run from standstill at 5v or 7v. if they can, consider urself lucky. i have 4 120mm FFB and only one can run at 5/7v. anyway, no need fan controller for the FFBs... u can actually make a flip switch for it. awake=12v, sleeping time 5 or 7v. thats what i did to my 120 & 80 mm FFBs in my case as well as the other fans in my case. helps hell of alot too.. best thing is the FFBs still push a decent amount of air even at 5v 12v-5v SWITCH 12v-7v SWITCH |

Don't blow directly on the PCB, can cause static. And positioning the hard disk like that is not recommended imo as the weight distribution is not balanced.

Thanks...will follow your advise. Still thinking of how to cooling down the hdd. Feeling that is good to screw it at the metal hdd case n let the heat flow to the case and put one or 2 fan blow from side..........Is this a good way to do? Pls advise. |

Why so bothered about hard disk cooling? They're designed NOT to require active cooling so as long as you have some airflow from the intake fan and not stack them too close together, then its fine.In fact, Dell ships millions of PC's without active cooling for hard disk so if it's ok for them...it's ok for you. |

Yes theres no need to. Just place it at the original stacking place, and put a fan in front of them. Usually cases has the fan mounting.

actually, if you arent overly concerned about HDD cooling, you can have the fan in between the 2 HDDs:
HDD1HDD1HDD1 HDD1HDD1HDD1 .............................fan .............................fan .............................fan HDD2HDD2HDD2 HDD2HDD2HDD2 putting the fan this way will reduce air turbulence and resistance [thus noise]. i found that i was able to push alot of air all the way to the rear of my casing [to the gcard] with a +/-18CFM fan. HDD2 will suffer a 13C rise in temps because of the lack of airflow on the bottom part [mine increased by 1.5/2C]. ![]() This post has been edited by Silon: Jul 17 2006, 04:14 PM |

yes.
because putting the fan directly in front of the grill+dust filter causes lots of noise [like putting a piece of cloth behind a table fan], ive moved the fan futher back to a place between the 2 HDDs. this way, the single 80mm fan can use the additional surface area of the grill+dust filter which was designed for 2. here's an illustration and pics: HDD1HDD1HDD1HDD1HDD1HDD1 HDD1HDD1HDD1HDD1HDD1HDD1 HDD1HDD1HDD1HDD1HDD1HDD1 <<<<<<<<fan <<<<<<<<fan <<<<<<<<fan <<<<<<<<fan <<<<<<<<fan HDD2HDD2HDD2HDD2HDD2HDD2 HDD2HDD2HDD2HDD2HDD2HDD2 HDD2HDD2HDD2HDD2HDD2HDD2 ![]() ![]() now the fan doesnt suffocate and guess what? GPU temps are down 2C, NB temps are also down by 2C and PWM area temps are slightly lowered by 1C. CPU temps are the same, the freezer64's fan was big enough to suck enough cool air even before i moved the fan further backwards and did not benefit from the extra pressure. HDD temps are up by 12C, which was suprising, i was expecting 34C. all in all, an excellent mod i must say edited; errors in typing This post has been edited by Silon: Jul 18 2006, 06:48 PM |

because it will make lots of noise?
my goal is to create a silent rig, ultimate/super cooling solutions are not necessary. im only using a 17.5CFM fan [+the PSU's super slow kinda useless fan] for exhaust; temps are okay and the rig is very quiet |

QUOTE(id86 @ Nov 27 2006, 11:37 PM) Yes it'll fit any case. BUT anything with the Silverstone name on it costs a bomb. Only those who use top end cases will b willing to spend on things like that. This kinda HDD thingy costs more than most ppl's capalang ATX case. |

i would rather do custom made rather than buying this casing or module... yet again sometimes its troublesome so buying it would not be a bad idea

QUOTE(farique @ Nov 29 2006, 08:56 PM) use a software called Speedfanif it doesnt show any hdd temp in the software most likely ur HDD is VERY old and doesnt support temp sensor. most new HDDs (mebbe even those around 2-3 years old) would usually have a temp sensor |

QUOTE(E-J@1 @ Nov 28 2006, 11:32 AM) CM's wont exactly fit any casing. It will only fit perfectly on Stacker. I tried it on my Cavalier, and have to use my DVD-RW to support it otherwise it will fall. Then use those wires to tie it to the casing so when moving the CPU, it wont slide in or out.Whether it works or not, can't say for sure. The average temp is 34C~36C. Dunno if this good or not since I only have this one Seagate hard disk. All my other hard disk are WD and Maxtor which wavers around 43C~45C and 40C respectively. BTW, as extra info the Seagate hdd is the only one on the module. Others are on the normal hdd compartment. This post has been edited by exentric_nova: Nov 29 2006, 09:57 PM |
