Hope that I dun offend anyone or to start a flame war - just sharing my tots. For example like me, i am driving a older version / one generation before the current one of the suzuki swifts sport manual (ZC31S) and i had a lot of fun with this little guy. When i say handling and driving pleasure (for me, might be different to everyone) and i am not talking about comfort to begin with:

- Better steering feedback - hence feel more confident in bends and turns. For Focus, steering feedback is there but a bit vague and is more on the light side.
- Cornering fun - Swift Sport has a little understeer. Throttle off, and the car will tail out abit and will be back on track.
- High revving NA with redline at 7K rpm. It might be noisy but that is what high rev engine's nature like Honda's B16A/B/C, K20A (CTR)
- with stiffer chassis and suspension with higher spring rate, stiffer damper and bigger diameter front ARB, hence less body roll. Its harder than normal swift. Heck its slightly harder than Focus Sport suspension too. Good on flat road with corners/highways but not on bumpy road like in Cyberjaya where i work
- best of all its a manual (but my missus complains she can't drive a manual )

The Ford Focus is considered an upgrade for me from B-segment to a C.

Don't need to modify the already good car like the Focus, in my opinion.

Just my view only so take it with a grain of salt. To me, modding a car is a waste of time and money. Those who modify their cars with stuff like suspension, strut bars, turbo etc.. Usually these are people who mod cheaper cars below RM100k. Usually you wil see a lot of modified Proton Wiras, Wajas etc.

Better concentrate on increasing your income and invest in a better car if you like your cars.

No experience with Mazda. The current Mazda 3 does not look good, but from the internet the Mazda 3 looks quite good. Only the hatchback version. For new Mazda 3 2014 sedan version, don't know how it will look like. But yes the front of the new Mazda 3 looks much better than the current one. SKy active engine sounds good, but performance will have to test drive. I have read about Mazda's handling being the best among the Japanese so it should be quite good. The driving dynamics will surely be different from Focus. Japanese vs continental, though it is still one of the better Japanese.

Might be useful to test the NVH of the Mazda. From what I heard it is quite a noisy car even the new Mazda 6. Maybe the NVH is improved in the new upcoming Mazda 3.

Personally for this segment, in terms of sporty good looks and performance in handling for a sedan in this cagetory below RM130k, the Focus and new Mazda 3 are the fore-runners. All others are lacking behind - safe Japanese Altis, Civic, Sylphy all focus on space, comfort and reliability but handling will be very mediocre. Peugeot 408 - may have good handling and space but ugly like a duck and notoriously poor Nasim after-sales. It depends on what a person wants in a vehicle.

The new Mazda 3 is worth waiting for if one is not in a hurry to get a new car this year. But the Focus is still the vehicle to beat when it comes to handling and sheer joy of driving. It just loses out on back space, only by a bit.

Well, I am not disputing the fact that modifying a stock car will yield benefits. It will surely bring some improvements in handling especially to vehicles which have mediocre handling. For the Focus, I can say it's already quite good, so it depends on how much performance one wants to squeeze out of it with modifications.

My point of view is already mentioned earlier, in that it's a waste of time and money to modify cars. To you it may be different, just a difference in philosophies and priorities. Having said that, I can understand that it brings huge satisfaction and a big grin to those who keep modifying their vehicles bit by bit and see the character of the car change. I guess it is just a passion or hobby of modifying.

To each his own I guess.

Yes, agreed that looks are personal. Mazda 3 2014 hatchback does look stunning. The sedan not so sure as there are no pictures on the internet.

Nasim and Sime Darby's after-sales service may be similar, but my gut feeling tells me the former is worse. After-sales service is one thing. In my mind the reliability of Peugeot, French in general is worse than Ford. In the long-run after the warranty period is over, one may experience more reliability issues with failing parts or electronics problem in the Peugeot than in the Ford.

Yes, Ford is originally from US though if you go through the history of Ford you will notice that Ford of Europe was founded in the 60's between British and German divisions and is a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company. The Focus, Mondeo, Fiesta are all developed by Ford Europe. As for why Ford is considered as a continental car, it's because it's developed in Europe. If you want to consider its origins as a brand then you may consider it as an American car.

Perhaps I was insensitive in my earlier comment. I apologise. I think everyone has their own passion and interest in certain things. And yes, I agree it can be an enjoyable experience to perform modifications and see the behavior of the vehicle changes wiht every step of modification you have done to it. May I ask what do you intend to modify? Isn't it risky to modify the major parts of the vehicle since it may not be in compliance with the designer's specification/requirement when he came up with the design or tuning of the Ford Focus? Maybe some minor modification such as sound system, HU or lights are okay. Suspension or engine parts may be a bit tricky or complicated(already excellent).

Anyway, no matter how much we want to think that our car is categorized under 'sports', it is still design to accommodate to 95% of the population. You can't be giving coilovers with 10kg/cm springs with 0 noise cancellation material in the car and expect everyone to accept it.

There are tons of things to mod if you are interested it in. From the chassis, to the handling, from the engine bay to the cabin and etc. The sky is the limit ... the problem is ... $$$

Nothing further this year, saving some valuable dough for my wedding soon ...

18" with maybe H&R sport springs first and foremost
Then to get Zetec S rear valance so that i could mod the exhaust and have two tail pipes (actual working tail pipes and not those for show only)
Might get a piggy back CPU for tuning as a last stage ...

Hello All,

I received my car on Wednesday and have driven it for almost 300KM. I don't have the low speed juddering at 1st-2nd gear... it felt almost like a normal auto-box unlike the show room car which i test drove with my wife. Put in to D, and it will start to creep forward slowly just like any conventional auto box. FYI, i drive daily in Seri Kembangan jams in the morning and after work.

After loan approved, about 2 weeks to get my cars. Yours might be faster as i wanted to transfer my old license plate to the new car, hence need to go through all the Puspakom inspection thingy. Best part, MySikap kicked in and more delay..

I presume the strong jerk only happens when the car is new. I guess the transmission needs some time to run-in, then the drive will smooth out. The gear changes will be less jerky once the mileage is close to 2,000km. In my case, quite smooth.

Due to the characteristics of the Powershift transmission, even after 2,000km the car will still exhibit a slight jerk sometimes, which can be reduced by being gentle on the footwork, mild step instead of abrupt force on the pedal which will cause the car to jerk forward.

As for smart entry delay, there may be a slight delay when one puts the palm onto the handle to open the door. But it's relatively quick anyway. Once it gets some use then it's a fairly easy thing to unlock/lock the doors the keyless entry way.

Delay in pick-up, during hard acceleration yes there is approx 0.5s delay. But in normal moderate acceleration, can say I felt there's a delay.

Steering is indeed light, but there is good feedback and response. That is one thing I love about the steering feel of the Focus. Other vehicles with light steering, the control is not as accurate or precise and may feel "loose". In low speeds, the steering of the Focus is indeed light, but at higher speeds I don't feel it gets heavier too much. Perhaps it get slightly heavier, but it is still light. I think it's a matter of preference, though I do prefer the steering weight and feel of the Focus over heavier steerings.

As for Sync, can't comment on this as I haven't really used it too much. Though sometimes when I want to call someone using the Sync and utter somebody's name, the system may end up calling someone else instead. Your pronunciation must be quite spot-on for the system to call the person that you intend to call.

To open the car door lock immediately, I find slipping in my hand into the door handle without my thumb gripping around the handle, a lot faster/better. I think the "Lock" sensor sometimes detects my thumb first, so invokes the 0.5 second delay before allowing me to open the door. Try it out to see if it helps. Also, when I walk up to the car from the back, I sometimes slip my hand into the back door's handle, just to unlock the car that sub-second faster, so that the car is already open by the time I walk the extra 3 feet to the front door. But I'm being weird....

I also had problems with the Sync; mine was that the Bluetooth Audio would not connect. Finally I read up to do a hard-reset by yanking the appropriate fuse from the internal fusebox (located under the front-passenger's leg area), waiting a couple of seconds, then pushing it back in. It worked! Now the car syncs with my phone for music playback using any app. Hands-free phone operations still work flawlessly, and no, the radio didn't reset.

FYI the fuse remover clip is in the FRONT fusebox, located in the engine compartment. Be prepared for some cursewords, as the cover is a pain to remove.
