Funny thing is, I've just answered the same question earlier this morning;

"Firstly look at their reputation. You can generally trust people with high reputation.

If you're trading something of very high value, you may even want to look at the person's reputation details & see what he or she's been doing to get those reps. Some scammers did many little SS trades to earn some reputation before scamming someone off big time.

Generally if you have higher reputation, you may ask to trade first & gift the balance later on. Vice versa, if you have lower reputation, you may need to gift first & trade later. But most importantly if you don't feel comfortable in gifting first, then don't trade especially when the other person's reputation is too low.

Then check the Scammer's list & Section, see whether the person has already been reported by others. Quite often the same scammer managed to scam a few person before getting banned here.

Another thing is, if the trade is too good to be true....chances that it's a scam is high too."
