dell inspiron 14r se i5 vs lenovo z480.....which is better for overall? as i hate about dell..the warranty to short....where can i buy blank laptop? without os as i got 10 free windows 8 pro.from microsoft..so i can save few hundreds
*
The Dell is better in a sense that it has a faster HDD. CPU and GPU-wise, both perform similarly...
As for warranty, no doubt Dell is better. The Z480 is slightly more expensive. The money you save from buying Dell can be used to extend warranty to 3 years (~@RM250) nod.gif
But I don't think you can get FreeDOS models though... we only have a handful of those, and most are very budgeted units hmm.gif

But a bit skeptical on the mSATA SSD.
Will it improve that boot speed and shutdown speed?  hmm.gif

I might go for the i3 version, since not gonna really game on it. I have a desktop for that.  laugh.gif

mSATA SSD will help in terms of overall speed, including boot and shutdown... but the speed increment will not be comparable to that of Full SSDs
You need at least RM3.2k to get a notebook with a stock, Full SSD from Dell sad.gif
Unless if you don't mind upgrading to SSD yourself tongue.gif

If from Dell. RM3.2K
How about others? I might look at other vendors.

I don't mind upgrading the HDD to SSD myself.
It just depend on the warranty from dell. hmm.gif

Well then, can consider this one:
14"
Dell Inspiron 14R, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM1899[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HP/W8

Use remaining money to extend warranty to 3 years, and perhaps a 140GB SSD

Hi guys, I will be studying Computer Engineering for the next few years and I'm not sure whether to get an ultrabook or a laptop.
Any recommendations?

Preferred brand: Asus
Budget: Below RM 4k
Screen Size: 14''

Thank you.

You'll probably need a higher spec notebook for Computer Engineering hmm.gif
But there are not much options for Asus at 14", perhaps you might want to consider 15.6" notebooks instead.
For 14":
Asus A45VS-VX028H, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT640M@RM2899[2.4kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8

An ultrabook would be good, with money to spare (but unfortunately most of them don't have 750GB HDD)  brows.gif
14"
Asus VivoBook S400CA=CA006H, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB + (1366x768; touch)@RM2499[2kg], 4GB, W8

Dell [Ultrabook]Inspiron 14z, i3-3217U + AMD HD7570M + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2099[1.87kg], 4GB, W7HB/W8, *no VGA port, OD

HP [Ultrabook] Envy 4-Ultrabook 4-1035TU, i3-2377M + Intel HD3000 + [32GB mSATA+ 500GB HDD(5400rpm)]@RM2159, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HP

Lenovo [Ultrabook]S400, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2099[1.8kg], 4GB, W7HB; W8@RM2199

Personally I'd suggest either the Asus (good-looking, touchscreen; but lousy warranty support), HP (good-looking) and Lenovo (good-looking, cheaper and ergonomic).
Use remaining money to extend warranty to 3 years brows.gif

Yeah, can consider this one:
15.6"
Asus N56VZ-S4284H, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M + (1920x1080) + Bluray@RM3699[2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 1TB, W8; color: black

It packs quite a punch, and doesn't weight as heavy as a G55 (not recommended here since you are probably looking for something more portable). Comes with quad core i7 for insane multitasking, and a FullHD screen for larger workspace~
You can use the remianing money for extra accessories, and perhaps upgrade the RAM to 8GB icon_rolleyes.gif

Hmm, hard to say laugh.gif
Whether it lasts or not depends on a little bit of luck, and most importantly how you take care fo the notebook brows.gif
To me, an additional feature means an additional potentially faulty component tongue.gif
and Asus Malaysia's warranty support is not exactly very good though..

Y580 is your best best man laugh.gif
Try looking for it, don't settle down for something poorer in terms of gaming performance, sure will regret...
Perhaps you can try your luck in LYN Garage Sales? brows.gif

The reseller you asked could be BSing you tongue.gif
Y580 is not EOL, Y480 is. The cheapest RM2999 RSP spec Y580 is getting less stocks in the market but Lenovo Malaysia is still selling it. The RM3499 RSP spec still has stocks.
Maybe you should ask other shops smile.gif
If really can't find Y580 in Perak, go for Y400 then thumbup.gif
