hey guys! newbie here, if it is possible i would like to have advice and suggestions by you guys here. ive been going to a dam near my place

user posted image

however after many many tries, me and my friends could not get anything at all. not even a nibble! i am really annoyed and wondering how on earth can a damn so big can have no fish in it!!

probably we are casting at the wrong places, or maybe we should fish there at night since fish will look for food at night. the bait we use are nightcrawlers (fat earthworms). the damn is very deep as you would expect.

Details about the Dam
- Very Deep
- Has grasses and weeds along the banks.
- Has birds flying around and picking up small fishes on the surface
- occasionally has fishes splashing water on the surface
- water is dark slightly murky black

any suggestions would be great! thanks!

In cases of dam fishing, I think you have higher chance if you are fishing from a boat than on land. Then again, not everyone can deploy a boat. Try asking the locals around, type of fish, bait, etc. Where is this dam anyway? Looks like a rather nice place
*
this dam is in Bentong, Pahang. It's called Perting Dam near Chamang Waterfalls.

my uncle who is a senior fishing guy told me that i should find spot where there are shades especially when fishing in the afternoon. i have to agree about the boat, there are many areas where i believe would have fishes hiding but juz could not reach the area.

would fishing at night be better since these fishes would come out and feed?

if you fish at a huge lake , i would suggest you bring bait that have strong smell

such as chicken intestine , since the lake is huge you might wanna consider feeding the fish at the same spot
for several days with fish pellet before you fish, just to attract the fish on the area to gather around
*
good idea, that's what i thought also. gonna try it one day. i think i wanna try buying chicken intestines like u said and let it rot a little juz to make the smell stronger. i think i might nidda put on shoes and trek around the place to survey a good spot.

Get a big Milo tin, cucuk many many lobang, stuff with chicken intestine. Close it.. throw to the spot where u wanna cast.
*
do i tie a long line to the milo tin? i need to retrieve it after i toss it right? seems kinda irresponsible to just leave it in the dam lolol
this seems like a really good idea! thanks!

Nice place you got there Sneaky Leaky.

If not mistaken, it's a direct river flow into it. Not a very big damn tho, approximately 700~800m line of sight. Dont mind to make a trip there. smile.gif

possibility of toman very little, perhaps you may want to target sebarau or baung. smile.gif
*
yeah its one of the nice places to fish in Bentong. if do do plan to make a trip here let me know! maybe we could meet up hehe. just email me if u plan to come biggrin.gif

1 more thing, i juz got info that the dam is 18 meters deep and took a boat ride (someone's boat biggrin.gif ) beyond the area where the photograph was taken. its pretty ... long lol. there are many area that are rather inaccessible though .. if one has a boat then everything would be solved

bro try live frog...usually this dams are filled with haruans....dont believe try try.
*
i tried live frogs, but maybe i was too noisy with my fren and probby scared away all the haruan lolz. alot of weeds around the banks and i tried few spots but cant get any. i think i shud try live fish and juz cast the line into open water.

by the way any of you guys here could guide me a little on landing a large fish? the moment it strikes i usually tighten the reel enough juz for it to struggle a little but i could reel it in if it's not struggling.

my uncle told me to keep the tension and not give room to the fish coz it will try to release itself if i give it too much free room. any comments? thanks in adv biggrin.gif

Tie with line so you can retrieve it later or to adjust the position. Do remember to add some stones in the tin to prevent it from moving too far from the targeted position. Judge the amount of weight to put in depending on the current  smile.gif
*
with the tin of intestines i don't have to throw it too far out right? since the strong awful smell should attract fishes from far away? am i right? lol how about like 10 meters away from me? damn tat means 11 meters of line haha i wonder if i could throw it tat far, what concerns me is when i poke the milo tin wif so many holes and when it's filled with intestines its gonna let out juices that could land on me when i toss it haha

QUOTE(acheong7 @ Mar 6 2013, 12:18 AM)
there's a difference between tightening the drag and keeping the line taut
general rule of thumb, set the drag to 1/3 of your line's breaking strain
eg, you're using 20lb line, set drag for just under 7lbs
need a handy dandy scale for that ... adjust drag accordingly until spool starts to turn around 7lbs
let the drag system do its job

reel drags work in tandem with rods
let the rod do its part by keeping the line taut as you hold it
rod can be used to turn the head of the fish from heading for cover

too tight a drag and your line could snap at any time when the fish runs
too loose and it'll go into cover
many tighten the drag, as the fish nears, to prevent the fish from making last minute desperate runs
this is a contributory factor to snapped lines and great frustration... so near and yet ...

lines are prone to snap also due to poor drags where the drag 'stutters' , ie not smooth
when the fish runs, hang on to rod and let drag do its work
when fish stops, lower rod and reel simultaneously
then pump, ie lift rod
then lower rod and reel ... repeat when fish has stopped until fish is landed  rclxm9.gif
this is where keeping the line taut as you reel is important, otherwise fish could shake off hook
have a fish friendly landing net handy ... trying to lift (big) fish out of water is a cause of broken rods
*
awesome advice. thanks a lot!

sigh still cant get any fishes, tried using chicken livers today and still not even a nibble. the other day when we were waiting while the lines are in the water a huge fish came up and splash water .... what mockery is this -.-

i think i really nid to know what the heck is in these waters.. man worms don't work, chicken livers don't work ... i really have no idea what else to try. do you guys think i should try live minnows? hook them at the tail and let cast it into the water? or maybe i am just casting the bait at all the wrong places. gosh this is so annoying!!

lol why you chose the hottest time in the day to fish........ doh.gif

try morning 6-10am instead ...
*
coz the only time available for me is in the afternoon .. sad.gif lol
would the weather play such a big role in this? what about mid night? would that be better?

and 1 more thing i nidda bug u guys for insights. usually ponds, lakes and rivers in Msia, given the right depth and cleanliness, there will be carps, catfishes and haruans right? especially a dam would have all of these fishes? if i use earthworms as baits that would be able to nail almost all fishes?

guys, i m planning to try minnow fishing in a dam. i am planning to leave a longer line between the sinker and the live small fish as bait so that the fish can swim around.

do i just cast it anywhere? the dam is 18 meters at the deepest point. would catfishes roam around to find food?

BTW bro, speaking of 18mtrs depth  u sure ur sinker drop straight down bo? What size sinker u using?
*
i have size 3 and size 7. i have another question, when i cast it out, will the fish fall out of the hook if i cast too hard?

yes, catfish are foragers
sinker size ... depends on baitfish size
say 3-3.5" lampam, carp or other baitfish ... those #1/2 sinkers with a metal loop or #4 oval sinkers is adequate
leader of approx 18-30" will allow the bait to swim freely
too long and it may lead to tangles ... hazards of the hobby
have to find out one way or another hehehehheh

bring along some sulfur if you're going at night
spread it around your spot to deter snakes
mosquito coil just in case
once you're used to night visits, can consider smelly bait
terrain familiarity + general idea of nocturnal visitors will give you an idea, since smelly bait also attracts monitors and snakes/cobras
oh yes, have a sturdy rod holder AND tie down the rod/reel ... just in case

i'm crazy enough to lay out 2-3 rods simultaneously
not because i want fish but i want action and to know what's available and what attracts
1 rod - earthworm
1 rod - baitfish
1 rod - seehum/shrimp/bread ...
i'll walk the edges with handline + earthworm for gobies  cool2.gif

awesome! i love how supportive this forum is despite having newbies asking 'silly' questions haha. thanks i will try it out tomorrow. tired of afternoon fishing, all the fish juz hides away. i am planning to get multiple baits. gizzard, minnows and worms and a few more maybe.

What's ur rod rating again?
Just follow the sway.
Can try looking for these.

omg rod rating haha i have no idea man. i try explain as much as i can

pretty darn long rod
pretty elastic, power casting it will propel the thing really far even with size 3
rod itself is pretty sturdy and stiff

no worries, bro ... we all need to start somewhere
i understand how it is for newbies ... like when i haven't met my sifu yet
forum advantage: more heads are always better than one heheheheheh

the #3 sinker is good enough i think
the sinker aids your cast so you don't really need to power cast
which can sometimes cause you to lose your baitfish ... if it's hooked too thinly
let the rig hang down bout 1-1.5' from rod tip (individual preference)
open bail arm, place line on index finger tip
start from 2'o clock position behind you slightly off center to your right (if you're righty)
bring forward to bout 10o'clock with a gentle snap of your wrist simultaneously letting go off your index finger to release the line
once you're used to it, you can go for the 10-2-10 swing
my apologies if i'm being captain obvious ...  blush.gif
*
thanks for the info. hmm i will try digest wad u juz told me lolz. but whatever it is i wont be power casting it, maybe lobbing it i guess. do i hook the fish around the upper part of the body?
