QUOTE(acheong7 @ May 12 2013, 09:05 AM) lol .. it really isn't that bad i dont have the slightest of doubt that bro acheong's advice is the best up there, but half way reading it, i skipped and type this: I LOVE SPINNING!! haharemember wot i said earlier bout training the thumb? that's training your thumb to 'feather', ie lightly touch the spool ... like an ultralight ABS in action BCs have two parts you need to know well when it comes to casting - clutch/spool control knob - brakes simply put: the clutch determines how loose the spool is ... the looser it is, the easier it is for it to turn and lures go out faster (at this stage, very easy for bihun oso) bihun happens when the spool turns faster than line goes out then when line lay is not good and is loose, when line bites into the rest of the line brakes are for slowing down the spool after a cast ... be it immediately or towards the end of the cast for beginners, if you're using centrifugal brakes, set it three on, three off, alternate them .... one on one off one on one off leave the brakes after setting it .... play around with the clutch to find the drop/fall speed at which you don't mihun .. in the beginning, encouraged to be slower, then let it fall faster as you get used to it. getting used to casting with a looser spool involves educating the thumb to feather the spool as line goes out ... no short cut or two ways bout it ... worth the effort to learn don't need to readjust brakes everytime for now, focus on getting your casts right, not distance distance automatically comes as you get used to it as you get used to it, change the 3-on, 3 off brake setting to 2-on, then 1-on .. then totally off you'd be surprised with the 2-on after using 3-on after some time .. you'll be itching to turn everything off lololol can someone pls chime in for magnetic brakes? desperate for a backup reel, i bought a DAM vittatus magnetic brake BC don't make any difference to me as for the lure weight ... follow the recommended range stated on the rod .. go for the heavier end first, ie 10-25g .. go for the 25g lure and practise with that all the best |

here's my 24 hour OFBN and sunken ship trip:
We reached jetty friday morning around 10am, boatman ah hon couldnt make it as his boat needed some repairing, so we went with another uncle, the same uncle that brought us to OFBN last trip. ( I made sure he knows that we'll throw the rubbish ourselves and not into the sea Wind was strong, and he said we'll leave a little bit later, so we ended up leaving jetty at around 11am, and the next 3 hour journey was very very bad, wave was very very strong, uncle had to go a bit slower. we reached OFBN around 2:30pm, and among 5 of us, 2 were down mabuk and started vomitting. me, my gf and another guy still ok so we started playing apollo. after about 30 mins later, i also kenot tahan and had to take a rest, wave was too strong. oh did i mention all of us took novomin b4 we left? 1 hour journey from OFBN, we reached there around 8:30pm, cast in our mantis prawn which cost RM1.50 each, uncle say can only target snapper with it, and leader has to be at least rod length and two hooks rigged to the mantis prawn, the tide calmed down and that was the time everyone was ok and started to really fish. we throw in cut fish also which resulted in one decent size "pak zhou", some nibbles, and suddenly uncle's heavy rod got a big pull. he mentioned u have to fight with force and dont let the fish go back inside the sunken ship, he pulled like there's no 2molo, clearly its a big one so i prepared the landing net, after some minutes of ruthless pulling, the fish surfaced, a 2.2kg snapper, which is the length of my coolman icebox, will show the pics later.. uncle got exhausted and rest The next few hours we got ntg, and it started to get very very windy again, so i ask boatman to just send us home, that was around 2:30am, so we left and 3 hours later, he stopped the boat and ask us to sleep first, morning only we continue the journey, so all of us slept Around 8am i woke up with some small fishes around the boat which jumped up during the journey, so i casted them in, got a strong pull, all i know i could even lift the fish by a bit, and its taking my line bit by bit, then it got away..damn..all my friends woke up fresh, wave was good, weather damn good, so they got excited and started fishing again. we're suppose to reach jetty at 10am as told by ah hon, but boatman woke up 10 mins later and say we need to go, i asked to fish for another 1-2 hours but he insists, not bcuz of the tide of course, and we reached jetty around 8:40am. all in all, it was an ok trip, if not for the snapper. 3 of my friends first time doing sea fishing, and all of them got seasick we couldnt get more fish at OFBN. but we'll go again next time, gotta request ah hon to go much earlier in the morning, so that we have more time to play apollo. mantis prawn can last forever, so its safe to say every 2 mantis prawn will get u 1 nice snapper, if they're biting, so dont have to buy too many, we bought 30, we only used up half of them, that also we threw away 3-4 dead ones on the way, and the rest released well and alive. its a bit long, hope u guys enjoy |

wah nice report, nice fishing and nice fishes, nice boatman as well got so many spot with fish finder
snapper comes in group, they're famous for getting spooked if u lose 1 of them. was wondering, u guys using ngau kok, where did u put the sinker? on the ngau kok itself or tie another line down and sinker at the bottom? kembong fish for barracuda, rig whole fish or cut or fillet? hook size 4 and 5 the whole trip? how many octopus u guys brought? u have any pics of the boatman? was wondering whether its the same boatman who took us and had to patah balik half way due to engine cover flew off lol sorry a lot questions, trying to learn here gotta bring heavier lines next time, in fact i think u shud change to braided, mono line lacks lifting power, especially around rocky or structural area where u cant afford to let the fish swims back and hide. i'm starting to think that bottom fishing at sea, u gotta pull the fish with brute force and cant afford to play around like we used to in paypond just my observation, hope any taiko can clarify |

QUOTE(siles1991 @ May 23 2013, 02:40 PM) Hi guys I want to start fishing but don't know where to start exactly. Since I was a kid I played a lot of fishing games and always played fishing mini-games xD also when my family used to go up to my uncles fruit estate they had a pond which we usually go fishing at but since I was young my dad about i guess almost all of the work. Now that i'm a big boy xD I really want to pick this up. hi siles, there has been a lot times ur questions answered in this forum but i understand its not easy to read tru all, so i'll just try to repeat what all other sifus said earlier:Anyone can tell me where to start? How much would I need to invest to get some starter gear? Anyone can teach me the basics :3 ? I live in PJ but i don't mind driving a bit to reach a nice fishing spot. for starter if u have 0 knowledge on fishing then its better to get a spinning setup and doing bottom, of which the cost depends on ur budget, from RM100 to astronomical figures lol (try to ignore poisons of expensive gears from all the sifus here, at least for now and welcome to fishing world |

QUOTE(siles1991 @ May 23 2013, 03:12 PM) thank you very much for taking the time to explain to me budget around RM300, grab a rod of around RM50-60, cant recommend any but it should be fine just look for 5 foot 5, easier to handle, and for reel, look for brand tomman model komodo 2000 or 3000, pink color a bit, shud be around RM60, thats the best around that range that i know, maybe some other sifus can recommend. for line, get tomman braided line, should cost u about RM11 for 100m. a toolbox, hook , batu ladung, scissors, plier, pin..very basic, shud be around RM300, unless u wanna do casting with lures/softbait, a diff type of fishing alreadyMy dad told me to go to Sungai Buloh if I wanted to go fishing, subang lake never heard of that place but after i google it found it. It would be nice if when one of the sifu going I can tag along so I won't be so awkward go there and don't know what to do hahaha |

personally tried tomman braided, it feels a bit more fragile of course compared to power pro, but u can count on it. only disadvantage i find is that abrasion resistant is not good, u might need to cut off a little of the line every time u fish, but never fail me/break while reeling in over the 2 years using it. casting range cant comment cuz both lines are on diff setup, and i use heavier poundage when choosing tomman (40lb). i'll put it this way: if power pro line can last u 1 year, tomman can last u prob 6 mths. its only my own observation, and i've only tried both lines b4 in braided line category
