when was the last time it was serviced?
how old is the reel and usage? salt and/or fresh?
felt, teflon or carbon washers?

drag stutters, ie start stop suddenly?

yep, alantani's one of the best

is that metal cap screwed down?
some reels have the top part screwed down ... need to take 'em out first before can access the washers

bro fau, if the spool can be removed or lifted up from the shaft but the drag washers cannot be coaxed out, need to pour lighter fluid onto the washers to loosen them up ...
before trying that, see if toothpick can coax them out first ...

apologies, inv bro ... options and shopping ... hence the additional stores

avet reels .. from what i've been told, the reel foot is thicker than most ... better to try fitting the reel and rod instead of getting rod first or getting rod without fitting

asian angler's bout as up to date and free as one can get

pancing and rod&line used to be available (online) freely
no idea what happened or if they decided to stop
buying these secondhand are worth it

vivek, bro .. if you're in PJ ... amcorp flea mart, the book shop above and other similar places
if you're online often, mudah.com and fishing forums have potential
the rest of the brothers can point out others as well

as for gear ... one needs to look at basics:
- target fish
- place, salt or fresh
- budget

big, strong stuff is good for big, strong fish
big, strong stuff = heavy = tiring

if budget is priority, try joining some kakis to check out their stuff, usage and cost
bro katsumoto's shah alam outing is a good start

two general schools of thought:
get cheap stuff, try ... if not interested, no big loss
invest in better gear, so that you don't need to spend more again
... in which case, you still retain some resale value should you decide not to pick up fishing
most of us subscribe to the latter after trial and error

tackle prices have been rising ....

graphite rods are light and strong .. within recommended limits
they anything from rm100+ to the thousands
something in the rm100+ to rm200+ is good enough

ABU, daiwa and shimanos reels are reliable and they carry certain workhorse models worth the money
banax has good reels for the money, too, but they weight slightly more
rm270, rm300+ to rm400+ will serve you well

this is excluding terminal tackle such as lines, hooks, etc
