Bell V-280 Valor Tiltrotor FVL
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bell unveils V-280 Valor By: Dave Majumdar Washington DC 11 hours ago Bell Helicopter is unveiling a new third-generation tiltrotor aircraft concept called the V-280 Valor, which it is pitching for the US Army's Joint Multi-Role (JMR)/Future Vertical Lift (FVL) programme. The army hopes to field a new medium-lift rotorcraft to replace its fleet of Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawks in the 2030s developed under its FVL effort. But the service does not simply want a new helicopter; it hopes to induct "leap-ahead" technologies that would enable its future rotorcraft to cruise at speeds approaching 230kt (426km/h). To this end, the army has launched a JMR technology demonstration effort and will select one or more companies to build a flying prototype that would be expected to take to the air in 2017. While Bell's V-22 Osprey partner Boeing is teaming with rival Sikorsky to pitch a high-speed compound helicopter design based on that company's X-2 prototype, Bell has opted to pursue what it calls a third generation tiltrotor. Called the V-280, the Bell concept features a V-tail, a large cell carbon core wing and a composite fuselage. Unlike the older V-22 design, the engines do not move, only the rotor-system tilts, Bell says. Coupled with a fly-by-wire system, the aircraft should have excellent high and low-speed handling qualities, the company says. The V-280 will be able to cruise efficiently at 280kt carrying 11 passengers comfortably with a mission radius of over 250nm (463km). |

Singapore requests AMRAAM missiles
Published: April 5, 2013 at 1:20 PM SINGAPORE, April 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency reports that Singapore is seeking the purchase of 20 AIM 9X-2 Sidewinder Block II All Up Round Missiles. The contract, if approved by Congress, would include associated equipment, parts and support and would be worth $36 million. " This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by increasing the ability of the Republic of Singapore to contribute to regional security, " the agency said, " Its contributions to counter-piracy and counter-terrorism efforts continue to stabilize a critical chokepoint where much of the world's goods and services transit en route to and from the Asia Pacific region. " Associated equipment to be supplied under the Foreign Military Sales package includes eight CATM-9X-2 captive air training missiles, five CATM-9X-2 Block II missile guidance units, two AIM-9X-2 Block II tactical guidance units, containers, spares and repair parts. " The Republic of Singapore requires these missiles to meet current and future threats of enemy aircraft, " the agency said. " The proposed sale will enhance RSAF's ability to operate with coalition forces in bilateral and multilateral exercises and potential air defense operations. " The prime contractor for the deal would be Raytheon Missile Systems. Sources : http://www.upi.com/ |

The Flatbed Terror
April 12, 2013 : A UAE (United Arab Emirates) company (Jobaria) has developed a unique artillery system. The MCL (Multiple Cradle Launcher) is an armored tractor hauling a flatbed trailer on which is mounted three automatically aimed launch turrets, each holding two pods each containing 40 122mm or 107mm rockets. Thus one MCL system can carry and launch 240 rockets in less than a minute. Reloading is fast (less than ten minutes) but requires trucks, with a crane, carrying 20 tons of rockets (in six pods). The big savings is in manpower, as each MCL only requires a crew of three. The MCL uses rockets that are made by dozens of manufacturers. The 122mm rockets are based on the Russian BM-21 design. Each of these rockets has a range of 20-40 kilometers. The 122mm rockets weigh 68.2 kg (150 pounds) and are 2.9 meters (nine feet) long. These have 20.5 kg (45 pound) warheads but not much accuracy because they are unguided. These rockets are only effective if fired in salvos or at large targets (like cities, large military bases, or industrial complexes). The longer range ones have smaller warheads and larger rocket motors, giving them a range of up to 40 kilometers. The smaller 107mm rockets have less range (six kilometers) and are based on the Russian BM-12 design. The 107mm rocket weighs 19 kg (42 pounds) and is 84 cm (33 inch) long. This rocket has a range of 6-12 kilometers and 1.35 kg (three pounds) of explosives in its warhead. There are BM-12 variants which have a smaller warhead and larger rocket motor, which gives it a max range of 12 kilometers. What could make the MCL truly terrifying would be the use of the GPS guided rockets that are becoming increasingly common. It was not easy getting the mechanical and electronic components to fit effectively in these small unguided rockets, but in the last few years several companies (including one in the UAE) have turned 70mm unguided rockets (long popular as aircraft and helicopter weapons) into laser guided missiles. Turning the 122mm rockets into GPS guided missiles would enable an MCL to hit over 200 targets with great accuracy in less than a minute. That would be a formidable artillery weapon. For the last decade the UAE has been encouraging local companies to develop weapons for use by local forces and export markets. So far this has resulted in UAE firms manufacturing military trucks, guided missiles, and small arms. Sources : http://strategypage.com/ The new Jobaria Defense System MCL Multiple Cradle 107/122mm Rocket Launcher at IDEX 2013. The Jobaria Company of United Arab Emirates has designed a new concept of artillery system which is presented for the first time at IDEX 2013, defence exhibition in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The JDS Multiple Cradle Launcher (MCL) is a 6x6 tractor truck with semi-trailer armed with four power-operated rocket launchers. Each rocket launcher has three blocks of 20 122 or 107 mm launcher tubes, in four lines. The JDS MCL is a Multiple Cradle Launcher used for close fire support as well as striking and suppressing hostile targets. The launcher can serve multiple purposes in modern warfare and is able to attack with high volume fire power. The launcher can engage any targets by using 240 x 122 or 107 mm rockets from a distance of 16 km to 40 km accurately. The launcher is deployed in an autonomous role and with own on-board Launcher Command Post, navigation system and accurate laying system, engages targets within this range. The launcher has an acceptable cross country capability, due to a high mobility wheeled tractor vehicle. The launcher has its own dedicated support vehicle. The ammunition is of pod technology for rapid and easy employment. The JDS MCL is an advanced rocket system characterized by high volume application, easy operation and crew maintenance, with a crew of only three. It is therefore an internationally advanced ultra-modern weapon system. The JDS MCL is a requirement of artillery from United Arab Emirates armed forces to put one battery of artillery rocket launcher to one vehicle, and replace six vehicles to do the same missions. Another advantage is the number of soldiers to operate the vehicle, only three in place of 40 for the same fire power. The system is completely manufactured in the United Arab Emirates, the truck is supply by Oshkosh, but the cabin is a local design and provides a protection against firing of small arms. Tasmanian MP labels Thatcher a ' war criminal '
![]() Photo : Margaret Thatcher in a British Army tank during her time as PM : Tasmanian minister David O'Byrne has labelled her a ' war criminal ' A Tasmanian Government minister is standing by his comments labelling former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher a " war criminal " . After the ' Iron Lady ' died earlier this week in Britain, aged 87, state Workplace Relations Minister David O'Byrne expressed his views on her legacy via Twitter. He referred to Thatcher as a war criminal and said her death should not erase her deeds or policies. Opposition Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Julie Bishop says the remarks are tasteless. " He should apologise to the family. It's hard to believe people can be so insensitive and so ungracious when talking about the former leader of one of our great allies, the United Kingdom, " she said. Liberal Senator Eric Abetz has also condemned the comments. " These comments ... are an embarrassment to himself, an embarrassment to the Labor Party but most importantly an embarrassment to the people of Tasmania," he said. " Premier (Lara) Giddings should be intervening, calling on him to apologise. " In a statement this morning, Mr O'Byrne said he was entitled to debate his view on personal forums like Twitter. A Tasmanian Government spokesman said Mr O'Byrne would not be disciplined for his comments. More than 300 Argentine sailors and soldiers died when a British submarine sank the General Belgrano in 1982 during the Falklands War. Thatcher was the prime minister at the time and there was debate about the legality of, and motives for, the sinking. Carr labelled a coward Meanwhile, Ms Bishop has also rounded on Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr, accusing him of launching a "cowardly attack" on Thatcher. Speaking to Lateline a day after her death, Senator Carr said he once had a conversation with Thatcher in which she warned that Australia should clamp down on Asian migration. He described the comment as an "unabashedly racist remark" and said it was made while his Malaysian-born wife was in the room. But Ms Bishop has accused Senator Carr of showing a complete lack of sensitivity, and has called on him to immediately apologise to the Thatcher family. " For him to make such a graceless cowardly attack on a former British PM, less than 24 hours after her death, shows the kind of man he is, " she said. " Not a shred of decency. There can be no excuse for this. He should apologise. " Thatcher died on Monday morning (UK time) at the age of 87 and will be accorded a ceremonial funeral at London's St Paul's Cathedral next week. Northrop Grumman MQ-8C Fire Scout
![]() ![]() The Navy's first aircraft carrier-capable unmanned fighter jet is still several years away, but its first carrier-launched helicopter is already in service and on its fifth deployment in places like Afghanistan and Africa (one was even shot down over Libya in 2011 while conducting surveillance and reconnaissance during the civil war there). The Navy currently owns roughly 30 of these little 24-foot-long unmanned, semi-autonomous helicopters, known as the MQ-8B Fire Scout, which it currently uses as non-weaponized, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms around the world. At Sea-Air-Space, Northrop Grumman unveiled the first scale model of the next iteration in the Fire Scout series, the MQ-8C. At nearly twice the size of its predecessor (its airframe is borrowed from the Bell 407 civilian helicopter, which in some variations can seat seven passengers), the MQ-8C is a real glimpse at the future of unmanned tactical helicopter flight. And for the Navy, which plans to integrate its Fire Scouts into its next generation of combat ships (in fact, its new Littoral Combat Ships more or less depend on an unmanned vertical takeoff and landing vehicle), the MQ-8C is also a way of maintaining a capability while hopefully driving down long-term costs. " UAVs have a really good story from an affordability perspective, " says Mike Fuqua, director of business development for Northrop Grumman's tactical unmanned systems. While they do require a shipboard maintenance team and operating crew, systems like Fire Scout are generally lighter and more fuel-efficient than manned helicopters, can devote more space to better and more complex sensor payloads, can be constructed from existing commercial components (like that Bell 407 airframe), and are tactically less vulnerable to boot. Had a manned ISR aircraft been shot down over Libya in 2011, the associated costs could've been extremely high -- up to and including the incalculable cost of human life. For this reason alone, the Fire Scout, though not inexpensive (total program cost stood at $2.8 billion as of the end of 2012), will likely continue to receive Navy support. LAAD : Boeing looks to establish KC-390 logistics system
By : STEPHEN TRIMBLE RIO DE JANEIRO Boeing will propose the establishment of a global logistics system to support the Embraer KC-390 airlifter and tanker to be modelled on the C-17's " sustainment partnership " programme, a top Boeing executive says. The KC-390 is three years away from entering service and Embraer has yet to reveal how it plans to support the aircraft, which the airframer hopes to sell around the world. Boeing, meanwhile, is looking for opportunities to keep its airlift workforce active as C-17 production winds down, and has identified the KC-390 logistics need as a key opportunity. " Look at our global support programme for the C-17, " says Jeff Kohler, Boeing vice-president for business development. " The Boeing company brings a logistics system that Embraer doesn't have yet. We haven't negotiated all that yet, but, if you think about it, that would be a great partnership for us, too. " Becoming involved in the KC-390 sustainment would mark an expansion of Boeing's participation in the programme. So far, both companies have only agreed that Boeing will produce a marketing plan and lead the sales effort in countries where it has a unique relationship with the local government. Boeing also provides limited support to Embraer's engineering staff, Kohler says. He describes it as a " little advice over the shoulder " on certain aspects of designing an airlifter. " Having a bigger aircraft where the ramp opens in flight, there are some unique things that you have to worry about when that happens, " Kohler says. Ultimately, Boeing also plans to lead a future sales campaign for the KC-390 in the US market. Embraer has avoided listing the US Air Force as a possible customer. The USA, in fact, is omitted from Embraer's forecast showing worldwide demand for 728 aircraft in the KC-390 class. Boeing, however, clearly senses an opportunity to market an alternative to the Lockheed Martin C-130J to the world's largest defence customer. " I think the assumption both of us have right now is that Boeing would lead that effort, " Kohler says. "You've got to deal with so many Buy American rules."
