BEKAS KONSTABEL DIANUGERAH DOKTOR PERSURATAN

user posted image

Bekas seorang Konstabel, Usman Awang, telah dianugerahkan Ijazah Kehormat Doktor Persuratan oleh Universiti Malaya, pada 1 Ogos 1983. Inilah pertama kali bekas seorang Konstabel dianugerah ijazah sedemikian.

Boeing F/A-XX 6th Gen Fighter Concept

user posted image

Boeing unveils updated F/A-XX sixth-gen fighter concept

Boeing is unveiling an updated version of its F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter concept at the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space Exposition in Washington DC this week.

The tail-less twin-engine stealth fighter design comes in " manned and unmanned options as possibilities per the US Navy, " Boeing says. The design features diverterless supersonic inlets reminiscent of those found on the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

The Boeing concept also features canards, which is somewhat of a surprise because the motion of those forward mounted control surfaces is generally assumed to compromise a stealth aircraft's frontal radar cross-section. But the lack of vertical tail surfaces suggests the aircraft would be optimized for all-aspect broadband stealth, which would be needed for operations in the most challenging anti-access/area denial environments.

Also of note in the manned version of the company's F/A-XX concept is the placement of the cockpit-rearward visibility appears to be restricted without the aid of a sensor apparatus similar to the F-35's distributed aperture system of six infrared cameras.

The Boeing F/A-XX concept is a response to a USN request for information (RFI) from April 2012 soliciting data for a replacement for the service's Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler fleets in the 2030s. The Super Hornet fleet is expected to start reaching the end of the jet's 9000h useful lifespan during that time period.

" The intent of this research is to solicit industry inputs on candidate solutions for CVN [nuclear-powered aircraft carrier] based aircraft to provide air supremacy with a multi-role strike capability in an anti-access/area denied (A2AD) operational environment, " the navy RFI stated. " Primary missions include, but are not limited to, air warfare (AW), strike warfare (STW), surface warfare (SUW), and close air support (CAS). "

Navy leaders had said at the time that they expect any new F/A-XX design to have greatly increased range and offer far superior kinematic performance compared to existing tactical aircraft.

' Iron Bird ' heroes of insurgency

31 March 2013| last updated at 12:25AM

LOOKING BACK : Every war veteran is a custodian of unique and heartfelt stories and memories -- narratives of sacrifice and woe. Among those in this courageous group are Nuri helicopter pilots and crew members who played a pivotal role in the struggle against the communist insurgency in the 1970s and 1980s. Shahimah Shaharuddin speaks to a former pilot who remembers his experiences vividly

MAJOR Nor Ibrahim Sulaiman was in Gubir Camp, a military base notched in the Ulu Muda forest reserve in Kedah, bordering Thailand, to refuel his helicopter.

He looked around the surrounding jungle and contemplated how such a beautiful and picturesque area could be stained by hostility, fighting and death.

Nor Ibrahim, who was then 26 years old, was co-piloting FM1710, one of two " Iron Birds ", a pet name given to the Royal Malaysian Air Force's mammoth chopper, from the detachment at Butterworth, Penang, to Gubir Camp in the northernmost part of Kedah.

The mission was to airlift rations and military supplies to the troops at the operation areas in the virgin jungle.

After a few flights, his Nuri landed at the camp to refuel. It was to be a simple and routine task. But that was until they heard heavy gunfire close to the camp.

Seconds later, a Land Rover, riddled with bullet holes, darted through the area. When asked, the driver told them that a convoy heading towards Gubir had been ambushed by communist terrorists.

Among the troops in it was Captain Hardev Singh, an intelligence officer of the 6th Brigade in Sungai Petani.

Nor Ibrahim was at the brigade earlier in the morning when his Nuri copter made a stopover.

Hardev, who was a long-time friend of Nor Ibrahim, had invited him for breakfast at the mess before he and his party left for Gubir in army trucks and Land Rovers, escorted by Ferret Scout cars.

"The driver of the Land Rover also told us that a few men in the convoy were killed, and Hardev was one of them."

That was on April 11, 1975, and Nor Ibrahim, who was from the 10th Squadron in Kuantan, says the ambush was one of the many brutal and bloody incidents the nation's forces faced when fighting the terrorists.

It was a period when the country plunged into guerilla war with the communist terrorists, who, despite being reduced to a tiny fraction of their peak strength, still remained at large, mainly in the Malaysia-Thai border areas.

And Gubir was one of their strongholds.

" When we learnt about what had happened to Hardev's convoy, the gunship pilot took off instantly. "

He says the enemies fled when the gunship flew in.

When the second Nuri, piloted by Lt Meor Zubir, arrived at the camp from Butterworth, he was tasked with picking up the casualties.

The aircraft was good to go but the only snag was they weren't sure of the exact location of the ambush.

Meor asked Nor Ibrahim to jump onto his aircraft to help them.

" When we finally found the site a few kilometres from Gubir Camp, we saw five bodies strewn on a dirt road. "

Since the area was too narrow for the Nuri to land, Nor Ibrahim says the helicopter had to winch up the bodies, including Hardev's.

" When I pulled his body up, I was choking.

" It was a numbing experience. It was only a few hours ago that we had breakfast together. "

Roles and challenges of the Nuri

While the Malaysian army engaged the communist terrorists on land, the personnel in the Nuri helicopters worked hard to ensure the lifeline between the ground troops and base camps was not severed.

In war, the tremendous advantage of air power rests in its ability to provide vital necessities to soldiers, other than winching them in and out of combat zones.

The Nuri helicopters, Nor Ibrahim says, amplified the effectiveness of the army operations.

They were seen as a crucial partner in fighting the communist terrorists and without a doubt, increased the survival rate of the soldiers.

Injured soldiers knew they could depend on the Nuri fleet to ferry them to a field hospital faster than if they had to seek treatment on foot, which would probably take weeks, or in a worst-case scenario, not happen at all.

Because of its sheer size and capability, the helicopter would be employed primarily to supply rations and other necessities, as well as airlifting military equipment and ground troops in and out of operation areas, conduct medical and casualty evacuations, and search-and-rescue operations.

In war, helicopter pilots also have the grim task of picking up bodies of soldiers. The roles were clear and simple, but Nor Ibrahim says they can be extremely delicate, if not dangerous and sometimes fatal, when operating in a hostile environment such as Gubir.

" Gubir was a special case as far as fighting the communist insurgency was concerned, " says the major.

" It was one of the communist terrorists' strongholds. "

The terrorists' posts were scattered throughout the thick jungle.

Aside from Gubir Camp, a few other military operations were also mounted in neighbouring Perak at Kroh in Pengkalan Hulu and Klian Intan.

Not only were these areas close to the border with Thailand, the density of the jungle made the whole operation of search-and-destroy more difficult.

Nuri helicopters were vulnerable to ground fire and like the army men, the pilots had to brave a barrage of bullets while hovering above hot areas.

" Remember that we were there to save lives, not take lives, so we carried few weapons on board.

" Other than the pilot's protective vest, each airman carried only a Browning 9mm pistol and an M16 rifle, " explains Nor Ibrahim.

Flying the Nuri through the thick northern jungle canopy came with its own set of problems.

Apart from the fact that they could be seen and heard by the enemy from miles away, the thick foliage did not offer an easy landing strip.

Most of the time, Nor Ibrahim says pilots had to wait above the dense jungle while ground troops and commandos abseiled up and down the aircraft.

" During that moment, we were sitting ducks.

The Nuri was exposed to extreme danger, " Nor Ibrahim says, adding that a Nuri riddled with bullet holes was a typical sight.

" Imagine trying to land a giant and very noisy machine in an area where there is little or no landing point, knowing all too well that the bad guys could be everywhere on the ground taking aim. "

Nuri helicopters ‘ were the hunted, not the hunter ’

MAJOR Nor Ibrahim narrates an incident when his Nuri was shot at during the evacuation of a Malaysian soldier at Selamat Sawadee in Thailand in 1979.

It was a joint operation between the Malaysian armed forces and Thailand to purge the communist insurgency in Thai territory.

" While hovering at the designated area, my co-pilot was told by the ground crew via radio to leave immediately.

" Later, we were told that troops on the ground had seen several communist terrorists literally running towards my helicopter trying to take a shot at it. "

As if using small arms against the Nuri was not enough, the terrorists had also resorted to a M79 grenade launcher to down the helicopter.

It happened when Nor Ibrahim was unloading rations at one of the landing points near the Kelian Intan operation area.

His helicopter was almost hit. After seeing troops take cover, his immediate reaction was to take off.

Just barely off the ground, a second shot was fired at the helicopter.

" The explosion was deafening and the aircraft was vibrating madly.

" My only thought was not to die there.

" It was a long 10-minute flight back to the Kelian Intan base camp. "

Nor Ibrahim had barely recovered from the shock when he was later tasked with picking up a casualty at another location.

The many shots aimed at the Nuri, he says, showed that they were the hunted, not the hunter.

This assertion was validated by ground troops who had discovered wooden planks on trees, apparently placed by the rebels who had used them to take opportune shots at low-flying helicopters.

" To the enemy, bringing down a helicopter was an enormous achievement and a morale booster.

" And because they also knew that the helicopters were the lifeline for the ground troops, they saw the need to sever that line. "

Burmese military admits airstrikes against Kachin

RANGOON, Burma (AP) — Burma's military acknowledged launching airstrikes against ethnic Kachin rebels in the north and said it captured a hilltop post from where the insurgents had attacked government supply convoys.

The statement broadcast on state television Wednesday contradicted government claims two days earlier that the military was not carrying out offensive air attacks on the Kachin, raising questions about how much control the elected government of reformist President Thein Sein has over the army.

The United States said Wednesday the use of air power in Kachin state was "extremely troubling." In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland urged the government and the Kachin rebel group to cease their conflict and begin a real dialogue for peace.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon called on Burma, also known as Myanmar, "to desist from any action that could endanger the lives of civilians living in the area or further intensify the conflict in the region," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said. Ban called on the government and rebels to work toward political reconciliation.

Burmese state television, quoting the Defense Ministry, said the military on Sunday occupied a Kachin Independence Army hilltop post during a mopping-up operation of the area where attacks had been launched against supply convoys.

The government has been seeking to supply a base at Lajayang very close to KIA headquarters at Laiza, the rebel group's last major outpost.

The government delivered an ultimatum to the Kachin to clear a road by Christmas Day so it could supply its base. The Kachin rejected the ultimatum for fear of a government attack on their own outpost.

KIA spokesman La Nan charged Monday that the supplies being sent to government troops included ammunition as well as rice.

" We will obstruct any army convoy that carries arms and ammunition that will be used against us, " he said. " This is the nature of war. "

Each side blames the other for intensified fighting that began a little over a week ago.

The Kachin said Monday they were being attacked by helicopter gunships and fighter jets, but President's Office director Maj. Zaw Htay said the aircraft were being used mainly to supply government units whose access to supplies by road had been cut off by the Kachin guerrillas.

" During the attack, the army used air support, " Wednesday's report said. It added that the military did not want to launch an offensive but attacked the outpost to maintain security and stability.

The report said government troops seized weapons including mortars, hand grenades, mines and 4,000 rounds of ammunition.

The military announcement highlights a seeming disconnect between the government and the military, which retains much power behind the scenes. An order late last year by Thein Sein to halt offensive operations against the Kachin was not honored in practice.

The Kachin, like Burma's other ethnic minorities, have long sought greater autonomy from the central government. They are the only major ethnic rebel group that has not reached a cease-fire agreement with Thein Sein's government, which came to power in 2011 after almost five decades of military rule.

His government has been hailed for instituting democratic reforms.

But tension with ethnic minorities, evidenced by the fighting with the Kachin, is considered a major long-term problem for the government and a threat to the nascent democracy.

Fighting erupted in Kachin state in June 2011 after the KIA refused to abandon a strategic base near a hydropower plant that is a joint venture with a Chinese company. There have been off-and-on skirmishes between the KIA and government troops, often escalating into serious bombardment by government troops.

Otokar to produce armored vehicles for security forces

ISTANBUL- Hürriyet Daily News

Turkish defense and civil industry firm Otokar has inked an agreement to provide tactical armored vehicles to the security forces amid the government’s problems with BMC, which promised to deliver Kirpi armored carriers but has been unable to deliver orders on time.

Otokar said yesterday that it planned to deliver the order, which is worth 82 million Turkish Liras, in 2013. The agreement encompasses the provision of various types of tactical wheeled armored vehicles.

Turkey’s defense procurement body, the Turkish Defense Industry Undersecretariat, gave BMC a one-month deadline on March 20 to deliver 175 Kirpis and 105 trucks that the company has failed to deliver thus far due to financial problems.

Levent Şenel, the head of the Defense Industry Undersecretariat’s land vehicles department, had said Turkey was not dependent on BMC for developing such vehicles and that the body could easily consider other options, including Otokar, for the construction of the carriers if the problems persisted.

“ During the tender process, we chose the Kirpi on the basis of its advantages but Otokar went on to create its own prototype. After testing the first one, it also produced another one in a different size. If we want to buy a ready-made one, there is a proper vehicle available .”

He said in addition to Otokar, FNNS was another company that could also develop this kind of vehicle. The National Defense Ministry had signed a deal in 2009 with BMC to produce 468 Kirpis and trucks in a range of sizes, to be delivered by the end of 2012. BMC is currently 175 armored carriers and 105 2.5-ton-capacity trucks behind the agreed schedule. Along with the military, police forces are also waiting for 468 Kirpi with past-due delivery dates.

The company has been in a tight squeeze since last May, when the company first failed to pay salaries on time, and production at BMC factories have halted several times in the intervening period. As a last resort, unpaid workers have protested against the company by marching to Ankara and Istanbul from İzmir, where BMC production is located.

China To Build A Larger 2nd Aircraft Carrier

April 24, 2013 18:19 PM

BEIJING, April 24 (Bernama) -- China will build a bigger aircraft carrier which could carry more fighters, said a senior officer with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy here, Tuesday.

" The next aircraft carrier we need will be larger and carry more fighters, " Xinhua news agency quoted Song Xue, deputy chief of staff of the PLA Navy as saying.

He revealed that China's future carrier group will be composed of carrier, destroyers, frigates, submarines and supply ship.

However, Song denied the accuracy of some foreign media reports on China's building new aircraft carriers in Shanghai without further elaboration.

Currently, China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, was refitted based on a Russian-made unfinished carrier and delivered to the Navy on Sept 25, 2012.

The Liaoning has a full displacement of more than 50,000 tonnes and it could carry about 30 fixed-wing aircraft.

Song said the J-15 still needed a lot more trial tests before operating on the carrier, and there would be more J-15 fighters as the Navy conducted more test flights.

More than one thousand Chinese enterprises have participated in the construction and refitting work of the Liaoning, he said.

Song promised that the Navy will invite foreign military attaches to visit the Liaoning.
