ESSCOM : DEFTECH AV-4 and AV-8 To The Fore
A fleet of 4×4 and 8×8 wheeled armoured personnel carriers (APC) designed and developed in Pekan are set to be used to defend the country against foreign incursions. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Government hoped to send a fleet of APCs produced by DRB-Hicom Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd (DEFTECH) to Lahad Datu, Sabah. “We have set up the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone to prevent any other armed intrusion and to further enhance the security of the state. “ The battalion will be supported with the necessary equipment and logistics by our very own APCs, ” he told some 2,000 staff of DRB-Hicom Group at the International College of Automotive Malaysia at Pekan on April 26. DEFTECH has unveiled its very first 4×4 wheeled APC dubbed the AV-4 during DSA 2006. The AV-4 has been tested not only by the Malaysian Army but other ASEAN armies as well including the Royal Brunei Land Forces (RBLF) and the Timor Leste Defence Force (F-FDTL). A police variant was also developed for potential usage by the RMP’s Armoured Car unit. As part of the Malaysian Army’s plan to replace its ageing Radpanzer Condor APC currently in service, DEFTECH has unveiled the new AV-8 APC during DSA 2010 which features many state-of-the-art technologies and weapons which would enable the Malaysian Army to fight efficiently in 21st century’s network centric warfare. Ops Daulat has been one of the best examples of the effectiveness of APCs in counter-terrorism and anti-guerilla warfare. Since the beginning of Ops Daulat on March, the Condors have played significant role to the ground troops engaging the Sulu terrorists by providing direct fire support as well as safely transporting the troops along the combat zones. Tejas grounds Medium Combat Aircraft project
Troubles in India’s ambitious Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) project has inflicted gaping wounds where it would hurt the Indian Air Force (IAF) the most—the future plans for an Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has “put on hold” the AMCA project that is being spearheaded by Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). The reason for the sudden decision to send the AMCA project—which began in right earnest in 2006 as the Medium Combat Aircraft (MCA) development in 2006—to cold storage is to help ADA to focus all its energies to first work on completing the much-delayed LCA project. “ The AMCA has been put on hold for the moment. This decision was taken recently to let the ADA focus on the LCA project, ” top Defence Ministry sources told The Sunday Standard. The AMCA project, for which the IAF provided the final Air Staff Qualitative Requirements (ASQR) in April 2010, may be taken up at a later date, sources said. But that will still be far away in the future. India will buy Rafale planes from the French Dassault Aviation as part of its 126 Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA); in the tender there is a provision to buy another 63 as a follow-on order. That apart, India is working on the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) in collaboration with Russia. With the final agreement on the design and development of the FGFA three months away, India will get at least 140 FGFAs for induction by 2027. Considering that most of the capabilities of AMCA will be covered by the MMRCA and FGFA planes, the revival of the AMCA will be a well thought-out one, sources said. The AMCA’s envisaged features include stealth, multi-role operations, adequate precision strike capabilities, including critical first-day missions such as Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) and Destruction of Enemy Air Defence (DEAD). The much-touted Tejas has taken 30 years already, at an escalated project cost of Rs 5,489 crore. Since the LCA project was sanctioned in 1983 at a cost of Rs 560 crore, the time overrun has resulted in a 10-fold increase in the project cost. The plane is yet to get even its Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) so that the IAF could take the plane for a spin. But sources pointed out that the LCA still lacks certain critical capabilities, including a reliable radar, and is deficient in at least 100 technical parameters. “ The plane cannot fly on its own. It needs a lifeline in the form of support and monitoring of its systems from the ground by technicians, ” they said. The LCA, in fact, gave creditable flying displays during the AeroIndia show in Yelahanka in Bangalore in February this year, and followed it up with weapons firing to hit both ground and aerial targets during the Iron Fist fire power display by the IAF in the Rajasthan’s Pokhran ranges, again in February this year. “ The common man thinks the plane is doing fine, its engine sounds great and the manoeuvres are perfect. But those flying and weapons firing displays are done with ground monitoring and support. The plane is still not ready to flying on its own, ” sources stressed. Their guess is the LCA may not meet its schedule of obtaining the IOC before July this year and it could take till December this year or early next year before it is ready. To give an example of LCA’s troubles, the sources noted that LCA was grounded for three months between September and December 2012 following problems with its landing gear. “ Normally, a combat plane is ready for its next sortie following a 30-minute attention from ground service personnel soon after it has returned from a mission. In the case of LCA, after a single sortie of about an hour or so, it needs three days of servicing before it can go for its next sortie, ” they said. At present, the IAF has placed an order for 40 LCAs Mk1 to raise two squadrons by 2016-17 with HAL which is the nodal agency for production of Tejas. But these will be delivered with the American General Electric F404 engines which provide only 80 Kilo Newton power. Later, 80 more LCAs of its Mk2 version will be ordered for raising four more squadrons. The LCA Mk2 will be powered by the GE F414 engines that provide a 90 Kilo Newton thrust. Pakistan Acquires Chinese Made PG99 (CS/SA1) wheeled Anti-Aircraft Guns
![]() Pakistan purchased a batch of Type PG99 (CS/SA1) anti-aircraft guns from China’s POLY Group in 2011. This type of anti-aircraft gun, which is also used by the PLA Army, was upgraded from GDF-02 that China imported from Switzerland in the earlier years. Mounted on a 6 x 6 truck, the PG99 CS/SA1 is a self-propelled variant of the Type 90 35 mm AA system, previously available only as a towed AA piece. The system is based on a licensed Oerlikon GDF-002, and is credited with a 1175 m/s muzzle velocity, 3200 metre effective range, and 2 x 500 rounds/min rate of fire, with 360° traverse and +92° to -5° elevation. The CS/SA-1 is suitable for point and coastal air defence. It is usually deployed near military bases, airfields, tunnels, islands, and along the coast to defend Sea Land of Communication (SLOC), ports, bridges and other important assets. Bulgaria to Sell 500 Armoured Personnel Carriers to Iraq
The Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, has reportedly negotiated a deal for the supply of 500 MT-LB armoured vehicles to Iraq. According to a report from the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA), the deal was sealed on Thursday in the presence of Iraq’s Acting Minister of Defence, Sadun al-Dulaymi Minister, (Sadoun al-Dulaimi), at the Hemus 2012 International Military Equipment Exhibition. The vehicles have a price tag of EUR 300,000 each, making the deal worth EUR 150 million. The Prime Minister said that the MT-LB armored vehicles had been produced in Terem‘s plants in Targovishte and one MT-LB would shortly be sent to Iraq for tests. - Sofia News Agency - Sources : http://www.iraq-businessnews.com Bulgaria will supply 500 APCs to Iraq Bulgarian Telegraph Agency informed that Boyko Borisov, prime-minister of Bulgaria signed a deal to supply 500 light armoured MTLB APCs to Iraq. Decision to sign the contract was made on May, 31, 2012 in the presence of Sadoun al-Dulaimi, Iraqi acting Minister of Defence at Hemus 2012 International Defense and Security exhibition. After the exhibition opening Borisov informed that the cost of the vehicles to be supplied to Iraq shall amount to around 300,000 levs per unit and total cost of the contract shall amount to 150 mln levs (appr. USD 77 mln). He also mentioned that MTLB APCs were produced at Terem plant in Tyrgovishte town and one MTLB will be sent to Iraq to undergo trials. Borisov also said that 36 mln euro deal for supply of special-purpose Kintex equipment from Bulgaria to Algeria will be completed soon. In addition he offered Liu Sheng, deputy Director of People's Liberation Army General Armaments Department to purchase ball ammunition. Borisov joked that one bullet for each Chinese soldier would be enough. Bulgarian prime-minister called on all countries present at the exhibition to purchase Bulgarian weapon systems, he underlined that they have never received any quality reclamation. Prime contractor for MTLB to Iraq will be Terem-Khan Krum tank repair plant, Tyrgovishte, Bulgaria. The plant is a part of Terem EAD association which is subordinated to Ministry of Defence of Bulgaria. The supplied vehicles will be discarded from service in Bulgarian army. Prior to delivery the vehicles will be overhauled and upgraded. The full scope of the upgrade was not unveiled but it is known that rubberized tracks will be installed as well as system designed by Bulgarian Politechnika firm which includes air-conditioner with auxiliary power unit that ensures comfort conditions for the crew in hot climate over a long period of time without giving additional load for the vehicle's main engine. Sources : http://www.army-guide.com Iraqi MT-LB converted into a SPAAG armed with a ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft gun. Iraq MT-LB converted into a SPAAG by mounting a ZU-23-2 23 mm twin anti-aircraft gun on the rear part of the vehicle. The gun had its wheels removed and as such can not be easily dismounted and used separately. There were at least two variations of this conversion. One with the ZU-23-2 mounted in an open-topped turret and one with the ZU-23-2 mounted on a platofrm extending beyond the hull of the MT-LB with a roof for the gun operators. The second version was most likely intended to be used in a fire support role as the roof would hinder the gun's sights at high elevation |

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) will develop a variant of the Surion transport helicopter for the South Korean marines.
GREG WALDRON SINGAPORE 18 APR 2013 The Defense Acquisition Program Administration " has selected KAI as a primary negotiator for the development of the amphibious task helicopter system " , the South Korean company said in a statement. In an email to Flightglobal, KAI says the marines will obtain " about 40 " of the amphibious assault variant. KAI says the development programme is worth South Korean won (W) 800 billion ($713 million) and will enhance the marines' ability to transport troops and equipment in the littoral environment. It expects to commence development of the variant in July, and complete it by the end of 2015. Production of the variant will then commence. Key modifications will include an integrated flotation system, an auxiliary fuel tank and specialised radio equipment. KAI will also obtain type certification for the new variant. The aircraft will likely operate from the South Korean Navy's Dokdo class assault ships, which can carry up to 15 helicopters. Seoul has received two Dokdo class ships and plans to have an eventual fleet of four. The marines currently uses Sikorsky UH-60 helicopters in the assault role. Since the launch of the programme in 2006, the South Korean army and police have ordered approximately 100 Surions, with plans to order up to 200. Its Captas and Smart S for LCS/Laksamana class
SHAH ALAM : As reported first here previously, it has now been confirmed that the Thales Captas towed array sonar and Smart S radar have been selected for the LCS/Laksamana class. BHIC Bhd announced this today : KUALA LUMPUR : Boustead Heavy Industries Corp. Bhd (BHIC) has accepted two contracts from Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (BNS) for two projects under the littoral combat ships programme. BHIC said on Monday its sub-subsidiary, Contraves Advanced Devices Sdn Bhd had accepted the contracts from BNS for the programme which will be carried out over 10 years. The first contract is for the Thales underwater systems CAPTAS towed array sonar complete with simulators valued at RM287.02mil. Captas ![]() Smart S Mk2 radar ![]() There is no word whether its the Captas 2 or 4 has been selected but the 4 is the most prolific one in service today including for the US LCS. Another interesting thing about the contracts is that they include simulators which will of course aid training for the crew. Noteworthy is also the price of the radar which is to me looks decent enough to replace those on the Kedah class. Coming fast on the heels of the confirmation of the 57mm gun, hopefully, this will signal the start of the project. - Malaysian Defence - |
