for those using unifi 5MB, does upgrading to 10MB helps in streaming especially China contents more smoothly?

as i know 10MB only applies for local speed...increasing to 10MB doesnt mean we have bigger pipes for oversea contents.

appreciate some real life experience and comments after upgrading from 5MB to 10MB.

I am using Unifi 10mbps now and I stream China contents no problem, except for when they had this problem with the underwater cable a while ago. But then I only use MoreTV apps and sometimes some contents are not available for certain content providers even though it is found in the app.

if u r still on xbmc frodo or xbmc gotham, consider moving to kodi helix. kodi is the new name of the app, xbmc will disappear.
latest version is kodi 14.0 helix beta2. more stable than the predecessors. works on q16, works on q5ii, so go ahead: smile.gif
just take note if u hv xbmc now, installing kodi will cause migraton of the .xbmc folder (addons, settings) to .kodi. meaning u can then delete xbmc to save memory, about 1xx mb.

find kodi 14.0 helix beta2 here:
http://kodi.tv/download/

a great new app applicable to kodi only is this bbts.
u gotta love >1500 live tv and radio stations!
mostly sd, some 720p 2.0.
includes news, movies, concerts, uk, usa tv, natgeo people, starworld, sky sports, russian tv, syria tv, bangkok tv, etc., etc. all live. thumbup.gif

if u do the numbers, most china videos are 1.0 audio. so, even hd ones can only be max 1gb for 1hr or 2gb for 2hrs.
that requires a speed of 277KBps x 8 = 2.2mbps. unifi5 shud do the job, no need unifi10 or 20.
but... only if there r no other users, no other devices using bandwidth.
and only if unifi is stable and max.
if unifi is not stable and some other devices come on and off, unifi5 may not be enough, unifi10 will be useful in this case.
unifi10 or 20 will also be very good for streaming hd videos like some in popcorn time that are 4-5gb in size.
ethernet connection is better than wifi. and, orig unifi router is not so good, a good router does help.

my exp... unifi10 does not guarantee good china streams even when full speed is available.
there are poor links, poor videos, poor sites, bad traffic...
too many unknowns, hard to determine.
e.g. many videos from youku and iqiyi in hitv does not stream well, whatever the time of the day.
on same hitv, pptv and vqq streams well, even "super" hd.
then, go to pudding, even better, hd, smooth all the way - can tell by the buffer.
go to mango, vst, togic, some excellent, some poor. sometimes get hd, sometimes get sd.
i m convinced even with unifi20, it will be the same - for the china sites in discussion.

of course, use of paid vpn should be very smooth as vip's will not be in the same traffic jams like the masses.

Sure you can, but this depend on your HDMI to DVI adapter, it is independent of Android box. Any brand of Android Box able to do this.

I guess it can be done since there is no conversion needed.

I am using Q5III Quad Core, tried XBMC Frodo and Gotham. Play local HD movie lagging. Solve it by using SPMC(Modded XBMC) , can be use like charm. The new XBMC Helix is there any Q5III Quad User tried it? How it perform? Is it still lagging when play local HD movie ? Just concern.

Thanks

Two things I would like to highlight :
1). DVI has male and female connector, pls kindly ensure you buy the right one.

2). Is your Monitor build in speaker? Typical monitor for PC use do not need speaker. But for video streaming, you need both audio and video.

i hv q16 quad on 1.0.6 and q5ii dual on 1.0.8.

spmc is a fork of xbmc. i tried it on q5ii, it works but i found it unstable, crashing. so i reverted to xbmc 13.2 and now kodi 14.0 beta2.
xbmc 13.1, 13.2, kodi 14.0 beta2 are all stable on q5ii.

q16, xbmc 13.1 and 13.2 are not very stable, crashing. kodi 14.0 beta2 is stable for q16. kodi (but not xbmc) can take new addon bbts 1000 live tv channels. tested it quite a bit, it is a great addon to have, the best live tv addon there is - usa, uk, italian, french stations... plus concerts, news, documentaries, history channel, travel channel, food network, etc., etc.

i do not know if the differences in performance of xbmc, spmc and kodi are due to brand, model, dual/quad or firmware or something else but i would think q5iii quad should be the same as q16 quad for kodi as the specs r the same except for emmc size.

i do not know if spmc addons/settings will migrate to kodi like it does with xbmc when u install kodi (a folder named org.xbmc.xbmc will migrate and get renamed org.xbmc.kodi). kodi now seems to be giving cold shoulders and understandably so, to ex-xbmc spinoffs like xunity.
that is actually good so that u dun need to set up all over again; just remove xbmc (or spmc?) app when satisfied with kodi.

yr concern is about playback via xbmc lagging... this i can't comment as i dun do local hdd playback on xbmc (understand u do that for extras like logos, get subs) i always use native player which works very well incl iso/bdmv/dtshdma. for q16 native local playback, pressing menu button on remote gives a photoshop quality setup option where u can define yr own picture quality parameters.

Thanks for replying my post. Ya I like to use one platform as media centre to play everything as XBMC/SPMC can provide me anything info and graphical on each movie. Nevermind, later will try Kodi (Helix) with my Q5III Quad. If still lagging and not smooth. Better stay with SPMC.

1. Yup, my DVI cable is both male.
2. I intend to connect speakers to the composite audio connectors ( red/white ), can it be done?

Can the Q16 be operated using an android phone without connecting to a TV/monitor?

yes, if u dun try, u never know.

if u dun already know, i suggest u copy and save the right setup/addons folder (can't remember the name for spmc) to copy back if case u need to reinstall spmc. first weeks using xbmc, i pulled my hair having to do repos, get addons, enable addons all over again...

2). You cannot partially output to HDMI and partially I composite audio.

You can use HiControl to operate via hand phone without TV output.
