i use this brand. local made
http://www.wim.com.my/webpages/wimproducts...=Stick%20(SMAW)
used mildly for DIY, 5-6 yrs ady.. no issue since day one. cost me ard rm500
other than that, u'll need grinder, gloves & face mask. rm200+

if getting a 2nd hand, better to ask what purpose it used prev-ly.. if used in welding shop, better not.. if for maintenance, diy etc i think no prob..

for me, ironworks are easier than woodworks. Potong & weld here n there, shape it & u'll get a strong everlasting product.

you seem like a pro so 1 question, do yo have a some kind of 'rule' saying that for each welding rod it should cover only few inch ?

ask yourself again
what you want to weld
what material you want to weld

no need to go course unless you seeking for certification to work in marine / oil&gas

the best way & cheap to learn is get yourself electrical welding at hardware shop ... if not mistaken about RM1xx for fanless welding box

easiest will be CO2 but machine n gas tank will cost you around 3k

if you looking for precise & small welding, argon welding will be the best but expensive

remember always always have SAFETY googles & gloves

I'm thinking the same thing. But in KL instead of Penang. Been watching quite a few of those youtube videos. Does not look that hard. But I have some remaining questions.

I see C.B.S says SMAW, but anyone have more detailed recommendations on the equipment? Where to get, what to get, approximately how much it will cost (simple set for beginnner).

Can get 2nd hand. Where. Is it advisable, or would a newbie be better off buying new (since they cannot evaluate if the equipment is good or defective).

I learn welding in University at IUKL (previously KLIUC). Under Automotive Engineering course.
They thought us welding with stick welding and MIG welding.
Is not hard, is matter of getting that comfortable position.

what a wastes if lidat.. even if the rod is rusty i still use it, till really near the other end..
as long as it joints & chun, sure can la. diy one no need have to surpass certain test etc

i no pro der. i think more like hardcore-ed addicts to diy. especially welding.
compared to masonry & woodworking, what you can make & use by welding are limitless. fr auto, furnishing, house-related etc.. plus it last longer & the cost is cheap too

true that.. it's not hard to get the 'comfortable' post.. depends on our steady hands to get it done in right way

the teary-eyes is bcos of the smoke + inefficient air circulation.. which are typically happen at gomen training centre

my advice;

when u weld a vertical joint, start from top to bottom, not bottom to top. many places u see people weld bottom to top, result look like melted candles.
*
bro , you dont know welding dont teach people lah.....

vertical welding is from bottom move toward top lah .....

people only do from top to bottom is because it easier to weld that way , but often time the weld is in very poor quality

even my bangla at my factory know the correct way to weld ........ doh.gif

I agree on that. At least from nothing at all, to something.
Just welding course or what?
For me, they only teach how to do beading and how to do T join.
Because the class involve with machining, so only 1 month i think learn. That is only like 1 class per week.
And the rest of the week only learn to do machining.

possibly the fumes from welding but that is why they recommend that welding be done in a properly ventilated space.

as long as you cover yourself up properly with welding specific PPE, you shouldn't have to worry.

the weld that you make in the training does little to nothing when you step outside for work......
the metal plate they using around 3 mm thickness , which is freaking easy to weld
even a newbie can learn how to weld that without a hole .....

i learn the the truth is a cruel way after i finish my course
i work as a welder , the pipe / metal plate that currently using in the industry
usually around 1mm , 1.6mm , 2.3mm , 3mm thickness

even the usage of 2.3 and 3 mm is not common.....
if you apply the same way you learn i can guaranty you all you see is HOLES ......

i embarrass my self on my 1st day to work doh.gif
only to know the world is freaking huge....

usually any hardware sell it. some hardware provide cut off saw for u to get the bars to be cut & fit it in ur car.
deswai i suggest u buy a grinder + a smaw set. u can plan the measurement 1st & straightaway cut at the shop.
the grinder is just for u to trim or maybe do some correction cutting only

yes u can buy even 1 piece. i always use 1"/3mm/6m angle bar if using smaw. around rm30/pcs

if u buy from dealer/steel hardware the price will be much lower

hahaha, true.
cause they don't even teach you how to setup the machine.
give you metal plate, go do beading.

seriously, if they had a class for welding only and machining only.
it better. kinda waste time just learn that only.
i really find welding fun. sad.gif

i hope that i will able to get a welding machine for self learning in the future.

EDIT: since now you work as a welder, what kind of welding you do?

mostly SMAW and MIG welding .....
TIG also have but i m not qualify for that, usually my senior take over TIG

TIG is very hard to learn since usually we only weld TIG on stainless steel pipe
and the pipe we using is freaking thin, 0.8 mm , the thickest only 1.6mm.....

it remind me during 2nd semester , 1 of the subject for evry engineering student required to do welding.. got 2 types of welding, fire using methane and oxygen n electric welding which common nowadays...

the fire type quite hard as while welding halfway, the metal will blow (quite loud) n the spark are all over the place
