Hey guys, our Campro thermostat sucks. I took mine out, it doesn't open up until around 93-95 Celcius.
I'm now trying a custom made thermostat, it's up to 10C cooler while your engine is running. Even acceleration feels smoother for somehow, I don't know how to reason this out yet. This post has been edited by mengsuan: Nov 21 2012, 04:14 PM |

You know what does a thermostat do?
Any liquid-cooled car engine has a small device called the thermostat that sits between the engine and the radiator. The thermostat in most cars is about 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter. Its job is to block the flow of coolant to the radiator until the engine has warmed up. What I noticed in traffic jam is, my OBD2 reports coolant temperature swinging from 88-95 repeatedly. The original thermostat lets my engine heat up till 95C before it opens the water flow for a while, then repeats. I guess this will cause thermal shocks on my engine block too, causing valve recession or worse, valve bent. Moreover hot engine block causes unwanted detonation that reduces performance. I only changed the thermostat today, my temperature is maximally at 88C. With new thermostat, the engine really benefited a lot from the moving air during highway drive. With the good water flow, the radiator manage to cool down the temperature to 81 when I drive at highway. |

QUOTE(Jemy @ Nov 21 2012, 04:32 PM) Don't trust the temperature gauge, it is insensitive from 70-95C. It shows the exact point no matter what the temperature show. I use my OBD2 reader to get from the ECU.My temperature is the usual half block from 90C (Half block before middle). I have heard from taxis whose engine boiled, but the gauge still show normal. This morning, we just saw a new Persona (manual transmission) knocking in the workshop. It was kind of impossible to believe since these car comes with knock sensor. Are you using AT or MT? We notice only the MT cars have knocking issue even on first gear.
If you're interested with the thermostat, we can meet up as part of Persona Club gathering. I can demonstrate the difference with the original thermostat with a glass of hot water. It is not commercially available, it is custom molded by Campro enthusiasts. We will be glad to have people testing it. This post has been edited by mengsuan: Nov 21 2012, 04:47 PM |

QUOTE(muslayer @ Nov 21 2012, 04:51 PM) Custom fabricated from custom mold. The custom mold also costed many thousands.Hence not original from Proton, but is plug and play. Non destructive, reversible. QUOTE(WanTheBear @ Nov 21 2012, 05:14 PM) I know where and how, but I don't have the tools. 5 minutes job, any workshop can do it.QUOTE(ckdenion @ Nov 21 2012, 05:43 PM) Sure, when is a good day?QUOTE(WanTheBear @ Nov 21 2012, 05:45 PM) That would be great! Then maybe I can take a youtube video. |

Thermostat is not universal, that's why it requires custom molding to produce just a few. Because of small scale production (we only made 30), the thermostat price is higher than original Proton thermostat. Each thermostat is RM100.
Some wonder why not just remove the thermostat, it's cheaper to do so. This custom thermostat specification is 55C, this allows your engine to warm up like usual, providing protection to the engine as soon as possible. At operating temperature, the custom thermostat has larger opening than the original. Just now I was stuck in long jam at LDP, the temperature did go up to 90C, but the coolant is quickly cooled without restriction when I move the car. Once the traffic is smoother, the coolant stabilized at temperatures that I can only achieve when it's raining. |

No side effects. No cutting involved either, full functionality retained.
I need a count of how many thermostats we need. First batch is very limited, cannot accommodate large orders. Even Proton does not have our custom thermostat ![]() I took a photo when I was testing it in a glass of hot water. The original (right) does not even want to open at all, that's why drops of water didn't drain off from it. I can show you guys the difference when we meet. Item: Campro Custom Thermostat Price: RM100 MOQ: 3 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) This post has been edited by mengsuan: Nov 21 2012, 09:10 PM |

Dismantle air box, there's a big fat hose, it's just inside. Take it out and put this in.

QUOTE(TDUEnthusiast @ Nov 21 2012, 09:40 PM) How much would the workmanship be if we wanted to swap the thermostat? Anyone got contacts for a friendly workshop nearby our location?Labour should not be expensive, even I can direct them what to do if they don't know. I just don't have the tools. |

Bro, if you read waxing guide, cannot apply on vinyl, plastic and glass. Later on the stuttering will become worse when the wax comes off partially. |

If you have trouble later, use glass cleaner and then apply rain x or something.
Today almost crash into a Mercedes's back. Cruising at high speed on North-South Expressway and suddenly cars stopped at a down slope. With the full load car, I have to use maximum braking force totally flat down. What I'm impressed with Proton's brake tuning, there's no wheel lock with the full braking force. If there is any at all, it's just a short squeak as if I'm equipped with ABS This post has been edited by mengsuan: Nov 25 2012, 11:00 PM |

If not because the Mercedes quickly move forward a bit, I am quite sure I'll hit his car. Thank god everything was good. It would be a terrible heart pain if I crashed.
