So you're saying mucho $$$$$ service costs?

Around RM 3.5K for Tag Heuer including module swap. For Tudor, maybe more than that. Peanuts for those driving a Porsche 906 or 910. laugh.gif

Is Bilan O' Polo BPC nice brand? How bout its quality n looks?
*
Bilan O'Polo is a house brand for a watch retailer. Time Planet Sdn. Bhd. Not sure about the quality, since I haven't noticed anyone selling these watches in my area.
Why don't you call them to find out the price?

Time Planet Sdn Bhd

I dont agree or disagree smile.gif just for discussion sake.. So you mean "vintage" has to be associated with a bumper year or period?
*
Yes. By definition, vintage means a period of origin or manufacture.
Example: I have a Seiko Kinetic SKJ006P1 of 1995 vintage. biggrin.gif

The term vintage is commonly misused.

am on a hunt for a 5513 at the moment.... hard to find a mint example with box and papers...but am in no rush...

Forget the 5513 and get a DSSD. While I'm not a big Rolex fan, the manufacture and details built into the DSSD is the best for a dive watch from Rolex. thumbup.gif

hi there catnip,

I have tried the entire of the latest range of Rolex Watches (except for the sky dweller and DJ which i don't care about) and i personally found the proportions DSDD too large for me...and this is coming from a Panerai owner... the escape valve and overtly protruding flat sapphire also just looks rather daft to me.. yes i know these are fundamental for the DSSD to reach teh great depths it is capable of, but the submariners are still my preferred of the Rolex diving range. Admittedly these preferences are mostly due to cosmetic reasons...I prefer the no dates because i prefer non cyclops magnifiers (yes i know the cyclops of the date-sub can be removed easily but i would never dare do that to any factory timepiece). My reasoning for choosing a vintage subbie is because i feel that the piece has evolved very little over the course of half a decade, hence it still looks relevant today. I personally love the challenge of looking for a full set, the tuna can bracelet that will still actually snap in place, decent condition hour and minute hands, etc... Vintage is new territory for me hence its i find it interesting, plus it would make a better story to tell my boys over our weekend piss ups smile.gif

ack! what a long reply for a sunday morning...

Overtly protruding flat sapphire... DeepSea Challenge? I wish I had the chance to examine this monster.

All the best in your search for a 5513. There's plenty out there but be mindful of frankenwatches built with non-genuine parts and tampered papers.

Happy Holidays!

Just curious, what do you guys/girls consider in priority when buying a watch?

The brand?
The looks?
In-house movement?
*
I'll add in another 3:
The price.
The durability.
The aftersales service and support.

When buying watches I ask myself:
What do I get for my money?
Taking all the above factors into consideration, I usually end up gravitating towards Seiko. It's good enough for a HK billionaire, and I consider it as an additional bonus point.
I have a very strong brand loyalty and I can't easily overcome that.

Do I really need it?
I collect other stuff too and I'm suffering from my other wants as well. Anyway, I always try to be content and count my blessings. wink.gif
Realistically, I do not need more than one, and my phone is a reliable timekeeper. I made a resolution to buy 1 wristwatch every year when I was a teenager. I'm not in a rush and will slowly add more into my collection of watches.

There's plenty of tutorials online.

Alternatively, you can go to any watch store and have it installed. Some do it for free while others charge a small fee if not bought from their store.

^What's wrong with China made winders? Care to share what you mean by 'quality type'?

Not everyone can afford Scatola del Tempo and Wolf Designs winders, especially for the average guy with a couple of Seiko's in their collection.
*
Some of the cheap winders can magnetize the watch. There are decent programmable winders that can get the job done that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. IMO, most people do not need winders unless they own a high end perpetual complication watch that is a PITA to adjust when the watch stops.

Anyway, the argument for and against winders have been discussed countless of times in watch forums.

Thought I'd share this. A friend purchased a Shanghai brand hand-winding watch recently. What's interesting is the dial which is printed with Chinese 'shi chen' 时辰, used to tell time during the time of dynasties. All for less than RM90.

IIANM, the ancient Chinese time system divides the the day into 12 zones. (equivalent to 2 hours)
How does one read time on that watch? I'm too tired to figure that out. sweat.gif

Time is read like any other watch. The markers are positioned in the way that correlates to the 12 hour system; outer ring represents pm, inner ring am.

There's a review with discussion on the Chinese time system on WUS.

Yes, it finally made sense. I initially thought it was a 24-hour dial.

user posted image

After taking into consideration the compatibility of the signs and their elements there's chaos and turmoil on the dial. Eg. Water Rat + Fire Horse at 12 o'clock.
Any takers?

I wonder if there is any truth in this chart when compared to real life relationships.

I didn't measure my 20yo Tag quartz but left to its own since months ago, its only a minute off.
*
Since you left the watch to its own months ago, the date would be off because it is not adjusted. How can you be so sure that it is only a minute off? Even a broken watch will tell time correctly twice a day. biggrin.gif
As for mine, I found out later that the movement was never serviced by the SC. Although it was working fine and keeping time well, its no longer doing so after 2 months I collect it from the SC. I'll decide later what to do with the watch.

Is yours mineral or sapphire glass?

Mine's this one... 1500 series. Sapphire glass.

It's retired with honors for distinguished service (met my wife with this watch  laugh.gif ) so I don't really monitor it but from casual observation every once a while, its still bang on accurate compared with the watch on my wrist.

The early models are using mineral glass. Here's mine. One of the last production models with raised indices and Sapphire glass. Amazingly the tritium still glows faintly.

I have a little rant to share:

My orient mako at exactly 6 o'clock, the minute hand is 2 degrees to the left of the 12 position and she is only one year old.

My tudor prince date which is 9 years old, the hour and minute hand is perfectly aligned at 6'o clock.

Talk about Swiss pedigree.

Are you sure that it isn't caused by changing the day and date incorrectly?

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. I considered getting an Orient M-Force or perhaps a GMT later this year. Apart from your issue, I'm not sure about the quality of Orient after sales service either. I think I'd better stick with Seiko just to be safe.
While Seiko owns Orient in Japan, in Malaysia the watches are distributed and serviced by different company.

Yes, its big. Sadly it has been discontinued. Whatever happened to their motto anyway? "Be Anything but Obvious" The Tudor Hydro 1200 caught my attention because it does not look like the typical divers watch from Rolex. It is different. Every year its more of the same ol same ol. laugh.gif I suppose the only con is the asking price and there's a lot watches out there that give better bang for the buck. For instance the Oris Prodiver Chronograph, Longines Heritage Column Wheel Chrono etc...

Still, for the right price, I might grab one for collection.

There is an advantage being a one watch guy. Less maintenance and headaches. Own many but wear only one. I can live with that.
The owner of the GMT at the bottom of the pic should pay more attention to the condition of his bracelet. It is stretched and looks like it could break anytime soon.
His prized Rolex could be lost forever if it breaks at an inopportune moment.
