anyone knows how to set wrt54gl with dd-wrt so it can act as repeater. I know there are bridge and client and WDS but what i need is purely repeating mode...

perhaps with OpenWRT it can be done?

replying to my own question... tongue.gif

umm i need some information obout this router :
1. does this router support 14 channels ( the Japan Standard) ?
2. does it support "client" mode ?
3. and does it have any external antena port ?

thanks for the help  smile.gif
*
1. Yes it does has (with dd-wrt) all 14 channels
2. You can have client mode, client-bridge mode, repeater mode (dd-wrt v24), AP mode
3. If u mean "does it has attachable antenna port", Yes it does has - two port to be accurate

Yes it is, check dd-wrt's website.

Oh and btw, there is that WRTSL54GS which is much powerful i think, oh wait, not (but costs rm 100 extra from wrt54gl and others).
*
found one GS version selling at rm290 at sunway pyramid IT centre. Bought myself another 2 unit of GL version at rm235. DD-WRT just rocks! rclxms.gif

GS version selling at RM390 is way too expensive. Normal price is about RM280 +/-. Unless u bought the WRTSL54GS at RM390 i can say it's a good deal.
*
sorry typo error...it's rm290... tongue.gif

Does anyone here know where to buy cheap high gain antenna for linksys router? preferably 7dBi - 12dBi. I can't find any in garage sales. Its for my WDS backbone network... laugh.gif

for those who want to try out new firmwares that have "one-in-a-box" chillispot-radius-uam server function, can give it a try...but still in beta.

http://coova.org/wiki/index.php/CoovaAP

it's not dd-wrt though but it has some great features.

Anyone here have configured their DD-WRT working as hotspot?
*
did you mean fully implementing chillispot? If that so, yes i had try it before and in the process of learning to do so. From my exprience, the easiest choice is by using worldspot solution (www.worldspot.net). But, if u are linux guru, u may try configure your chillispot with external radius, sql server, and uam server. It may cost u a lot of time and patience, personally i haven't found out my own solution yet. Still in the process laugh.gif

but, if you are prefering what's called as in a box solution (or sometimes refer as captive portal) there's some choice that we can choose from. But, as far as i know Brainslayer won't implement captive portal in dd-wrt for some reason...

perhaps u can try add pfsense box for ur hotspot? I think it got a lot useful features to implement hotspot:

1. PPPoE server
2. traffic shaping
3. Dual WAN fail over
4. captive portal

I have a old PIII box running pfsense now. I don't have enough equipment to test it all though..hehe
*
actually, i am using monowall as a main router and for captive portal. Pfsense is based on monowall...but dont have usb-boot support...

anyway, its a good choice for the time being...

i saw some1 selling 7db high gain linksys antenna kit on lelong n got some1 bought it. is there by any chance a member of lyn forum who bought the antenna? just wanna know the outcome of the product. ive google around n found mixed results abt it. some said good n others said the other way around.
*
nope, they won't give much different unless u are using it in open-air environment (means no wall between ur router and wireless client). Last time i did asked about this matter and if i'm not mistaken somebody reply with bad impression about this type of antenna.

try google around about what actually linksys put inside those so called rubber -7dBi antenna, and u will be amazed to find that it don't even worth rm120

does anyone know how to reroute all connection tru proxy server (wkkay's proxy to be accurate) in the dd-wrt itselft, i know it is possible.

I don't want to manually add proxy in IE or firefox for all my wireless client because it will take time, and it will bypassed my chillispot setting.

edited : damn...i burned out one of my linksys power adaptor. Now try using universal power adaptor at 12v 1A. Donno it is safe or not yawn.gif

i am using dd-wrt v23 sp2 mini version....
now i am at router mode with automatic configuration DCHP for dailing...

actually i need to set the port forwarding, DNS and so on stuff to the linksys router or my adsl modem...?
*
set adsl modem in bridge mode.
use ppoe connection in dd-wrt itself.
portforward in dd-wrt.

thanks idragon, actually i have 5 wrt54gl, none of them has burned (adapter) before. but in this case, i use it in very extreme manner sweat.gif (250mW output power, "extended" power cable, waterproof case, external antenna) sweat.gif i should have gone easy with this one...luckily i didn't burned the whole router tongue.gif

no wonder i don`t see the features on special edition inside free edition...
wondering so long why don`t have the features locking the bandwidth per user...
now i get the answer... rclxub.gif  sweat.gif
*
snowmei, your problem solved already? yeah i can see the motive to go for commercial firmware after brainslayer start selling the special firmwares sometimes middle of last year. and that why there isn't any new features added to dd-wrt for broadcom based firmware.

snowmei, "Per User Bandwith Control" we can get it for free by using this Script Generator

thanks for the sharing, but too bad it doesn't support my LAN ip configuration which is in 184.x subnet...

but there's alway an option for this feature eg...DIY router...but it is a waste for true wrt potential...

i bricked my router b4, still pingable but the power light keeps on flashing

so i download ori firmware from linksys website, then powercycle the router, once the pinging start replying.. i immediately execute "tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT firmwarefile.bin"

and it works for me..!!!
its not the power adapter issue, its the firefox thing.. current firefox could not properly update the firmware. causing the router to brick.

read it somewhere in ddwrt wiki

thanks man... notworthy.gif you are my savior

i've tried several times tftp using dd-wrt firmwares and alway get timeout error n code error something like that. after that i just feel so tired and take a nice sleep tongue.gif

i woke up and read your post about the original linksys firmware and think of give one more shot, and it was a headshot!! thanks!!

Note : maybe its not a power adaptor after all, i was trying the new v23 sp3 beta... whistling.gif

i read in dd-wrt forum, they recommended xmit power for GL version changed to 151mW.

i use 151mW for about one month now, but the condition might be different because i hv changed the whole thing as DIY (the picture might tells everything)

p/s : this fellow can do up to 1.2km tongue.gif

currently using this package for main AP for my WDS network (point to multipoint). I'm not using it to cover 1.2km radius Lolx... but i always got green signal from rflow from all my repeater APs (probably around 400m radius. Never got time to try its limit..

so far so good. it only cost me around rm370 for 8.5dbi high gain antenna and outdoor casing+wall mounting...but, one thing for sure, the warranty definately VOID!

edited : ping to all repeating APs are <1ms , but it get bit stinky when there's thunderstorm...
