Probably Central i-City instead of 1U or Sunway Pyramid. That and Sunway Velocity are their biggest screens, can fully display IMAX's tall 1.43:1 format

If Sunway Velocity gets dual-Laser, habislah GSC for me (unless they upgrade MyTown from BIG to IMAX Laser hall). I won't wanna watch movies anywhere else hahaha
*
Think Central i-City probably will get the Laser setup but not dual (hence 1:9) only, as the screen size is actually quite wide (instead of tall).

Really hope Velocity to get Dual Laser so it can project 1:43! Since the screen is already tall

Super excited to see how big is the IMAX screen in Pavilion Bukit Jalil! But gutted there isn't any big releases to showcase IMAX capabilities...

So after the slight disappointment with 4DX, I went back to Lalaport for Interstellar round 2, but this time in BIG cinema.

It was great! The screen size is big (I felt its quite similar to IOI City IMAX)! What impressed me the most is the sound quality, its quite powerful (maybe not as bassy vs IMAX), but definitely better than most non IMAX halls. The sound imaging is great, arguably better than IMAX, as IMAX tend to be overpowering (but thats what I love about IMAX, boom boom). I dont have a good pair of eyes for picture quality, but it seems perfectly fine to me.

Only downside I can say is the seats isn't very comfortable (less cushion and no recliner), and the hall is FREEZING COLD, so do bring your thick jacket (my thin jacket wasnt enough)!

Recommend to sit at the second/third last row (last row is couple seats).

Priced at RM22 with free parking at Lalaport (the shopping mall building, dont park at GSC building), this definitely is worth the bucks!

I went to Lalaport again (third time in this week), this time for The Creator at BIG hall!
I think The Creator is more properly mixed for Dolby Atmos, and the sound imaging was the best I've ever experienced.

It's not the powerful / bassy type, but it's super accurate. I could actually hear the exact location in the hall where the sound is coming from - there was a scene the sound is coming from the side of the hall, I thought it was someone playing the music from their phone. It's really something I have never experienced in other halls before.

I also counted the number of speakers in the hall: 7 on each side, 6 at the back, and 14 on the ceiling. Not sure how many behind the screen.

I am also planning on watching The Creator, but not sure if I want to go watch in IMAX Xenon (TGV Velocity), or BIG Laser (GSC MyTown). Someone please do comparison of GSC BIG Halls between MyTown/LalaPort/Starling/Pavilion BJ haha
*
I think Velocity IMAX is not the right place to watch The Creator, given that the movie is shown in 2.76:1 aspect ratio (even wider/shorter than most films). There will be severe letterboxing in Velocity IMAX screen since the screen is so tall.

Apparently Pavilion Bukit Jalil IMAX is smaller than Velocity (but still big haha)

hows the aspect ratio? apparently the creator utilize wide screen, does the black bar very noticeable?

It's noticeable but luckily BIG screen is quite big, so the picture shown is still big enough, so no issue.

Sunway Velocity's TGV IMAX is open again, now advertised as "Malaysia's Biggest IMAX Laser and 12-channel sound." The seat layout has also changed as the twin seats are now removed. All seats also upgraded to glide.

user posted image

Only thing not mentioned is whether the screen was changed to 1.9:1 or remains that big 1.43:1, nor is it single or dual laser. Well, one way to find out is to watch a film there xd.

The TGV twitter account also mentioned that 1-Utama's IMAX will be re-launching next month with IMAX Laser. Honestly, pretty excited to see what changes they made with these two halls, but a bit sad that there's no movie out right now that would utilize the whole screen + 12 track audio properly. I guess the only one right now would be Hunger Games which according to IMDB, has some 1.9:1 scenes and utilizes 12-track audio, but... eh, not interested in that movie.
*
Based on comments, its Single Laser, so cant utilize the tall screen.

That's the big IMAX film of this year. Hope that a Laser GT hall will open alongside or during the film's air time. Other than that, it will be the best film to test out the capabilities of the 12 channel audio TGV and a small copy extend of GSC have been promoting about.
*
Yeahh! But even without a new GT hall, Sunway Velocity Laser upgrade is also worth a rewatch (there wasn't any Laser hall in Malaysia during Dune 1 original release)

Anyway I did a quick calculation to see in which hall we can get the biggest image with a 1:9 ratio film (all IMAX hall in Malaysia can only project 1:9, not 1:43).

Attached Image

If the screen dimension I get from online and my calculation is correct - looks like Velocity is a clear winner, especially when it's now a Laser hall (i-City in second place is still Xenon, not Laser).

Included IMAX Melbourne for reference - a trip to Melbourne maybe? rclxm9.gif

Speaking of 4DX, recently I went to watch Aquaman in 4DX.

The experience was so terrible haha, just nonsense moving non-stop

Top Gun 2 in 4DX was one of the most memorable experience though

Done with the Dune rerun @ Velocity. Somehow after watching Oppie, everything else seemed blurry even on the same Laser IMAX projection lol

Next on the menu : Dune Part 2
*
Rewatched Dune @ Velocity too! Dune isnt the sharpest movie (especially compared to Oppie), but the 10 mins Dune 2 preview looks quite sharp!
Looking forward!

And also hopefully Tenet rerelease comes to Malaysia too, it's the movie that converted me into an IMAX fan. The soundtrack is just damn good in IMAX

So, GSC is currently doing reruns of Tom Cruise's last 2 films: Top Gun Maverick and Mission Impossible 7 Dead Reckoning. Both are available in IMAX, but only in TRX. Top Gun Maverick also returns in 4DX, so those interested in that hall should visit it with this movie airing. This is one of the best films to utilize the seats in that hall, and actually elevates the excitement and thrills that film provides. I know @skylinelover definitely happy with this haha.

Personally, I want to watch Top Gun Maverick in IMAX again, but only if it's in Laser, which TRX is. However, I'm not willing to pay the luxury ticket price for that hall. Hopefully IOI City Mall 2 would also follow suit or even better, TGV but no updates yet.

Mission Impossible wise, I honestly rather have MI6 Fallout air instead, as personally, that's the best film currently in the MI series and actually has expanded, 1.9:1 scenes in it whereas MI7 does not.

This rerun is actually funny because in the USA, Dune 2 will re-run in IMAX soon instead due to popular demand. I thought Malaysia would also follow suit, but at least for GSC, we went for Tom Cruise instead which is also awesome.

PS. Both films are also in ScreenX but avoid that hall. It's trash.

I also highly recommend watching Top Gun in 4DX. One of the best movie experience I had.

Most BIG halls are occupied by non-Hollywood movies. I checked for Furiosa and its BIG airing is in Starling only. The other time slots are for The Experts or Twillight of the Warriors.
In terms of audio (since speakers are newer) yes, but screen size is very small, in fact smallest of the BIG screens in KV. Personally, in KV, the best are Starling then Tropicana Gardens as their screens are bigger. Both halls also have fantastic DA speakers and calibration. I wanted to visit Starling for Planet of The Apes and Furiosa but far for me, and the time slot for both films in that hall were limited too

MyTown is also good but after so long, they haven't fixed the AC or Speaker noise on the top left (went there for The Fall Guy revently). It tends to make a distracting, audible creaking noise that is very distracting during quieter scenes. If they fix that, then it'll be the best accessible Big hall in the KL area la.

Starling should be bigger, this was the MBO BigScreen previously… another BigScreen which I liked is at Melaka 🤣 but the whole cinema damn run down now.

I watched The Batman in Starling BIG but didnt have good experience.. maybe screen was too dark and the audio was lackluster.. since then I didn't revisit Starling BIG anymore..

12 replies since my last visit! So happy that this thread is getting the traction!

But anyway it's getting more difficult for me to watch a movie now since I have a newborn baby now, but managed to catch Alien Romulus at Velocity IMAX and it was great! Awesome movie and those 0 gravity shots in IMAX make me feel like I am floating.

Also the Joker trailer was shown before Alien and some shots look absolutely stunning with the tall aspect ratio! Early reviews didn't look positive but will still be watching it in IMAX as I loved the first film.

Just to second @katharsis, I really hope one day the IMAX at i-City will be upgraded to Laser and 12 channel audio. I have been visiting Velocity since Velocity is upgraded to Laser and removed the stupid couple seat arrangement.

But the hall at i-City is stunning. Always a great experience walking towards the IMAX hall, the big IMAX logo, the dedicated washroom beside the hall, the entrance to the hall.. Damnn

Took a half day leave to watch Joker 2 in Velocity IMAX..

Aduh what a letdown. The visuals are great (especially the lighting in some scenes) but couldn't compensate with the severe lack of story and misplaced musical scenes.

I rarely say this, but if you're on the fence whether to watch this in IMAX, you don't have to, it's not worth spending the RM35.

But of course if you already plan to watch this in IMAX, go ahead, but lower the down your expectation and enjoy it!

Side note: in terms of censoring, I think there's only one sex scene being cut. Gutted about it because I think it's one of the more crucial scene.

Well, guess all of us here has got to experience a bad sequel to an anticipated film. You guys got Joker 2, I got Smile 2. hahaha. Watched it in Pav BJ Atmos and it wasn't a good time movie wise as the script imo sucked and wasn't as scary or stressful as the first film.

I also had the courtesy of experiencing rude viewers there being disruptive af by talking loud during quiet, chill moments then messing up the tense build up of a scary scene (seriously, fuck these people).

That aside, hall wise, I visited this it a numeral times already and I can safely say that it is great with its top notch atmos speaker and surprisingly great image quality with the 4k Christie projector (better than most Big halls). Modest screen size but still bigger than normal halls. This is the closest we can get in terms of Dolby Vision/Cinema in Malaysia for now haha.

Anyway, now I can safely say I feel you guys, @ericling and @nnannon24. October has been a bad month for sequels. Guess only Venom now, but the past 2 films haven't gotten great reception, just meh too so HAHAHA. Plus, it is a Sony film so yikes.
*
I will skip Venom as I dont follow the franchise. Eyeing Gladiator 2 as the next IMAX visit, but its a sequel and looking at the trend of sequels, I gotta hold and wait for the reviews from wider audience before going in.. lesson learnt.. hahah

and weeks after Joker 2, I still cant fathom how they really messed up the sequel
