Just watched Avatar: The Way of Water at IOI City Mall 2 (East)'s GSC IMAX with Laser last night

Despite the smaller screen size, I loved the picture quality! It was crisp anywhere you looked at and was super immersive to me since I could perceive so much depth between foreground elements/the characters/background elements

However, I will say that the way the movie switched between 48fps and 24fps in some sequences with dialogue was quite jarring and took me out of it. The HFR worked best during continuous underwater and action sequences when there was minimal dialogue. IMO James Cameron should've mastered even the dialogue scenes in 48fps

Also I hope that TGV will take GSC as a threat and upgrade their digital GT IMAX at Sunway Velocity to Laser soon

Planning to watch Titanic in GSC IMAX! Any suggestion on where best to sit?

Just checked with GSC, Titanic screening in IMAX laser wont be in HFR.

Might be a good news since Titanic probably wont benefit lot from HFR and the switching between HFR and normal might be distracting.

Watched Titanic in IMAX 3D Laser at GSC IOI (East).

Good: Noticed a clear picture quality. Seats are very comfortable!
Downside: The screen is definitely smaller compared to i-City TGV's IMAX, would say quite similar to Starling's BIG in size.

i-City IMAX would still my go to, unless GSC pricing is cheaper (currently both is priced at RM42), or for movies that will benefit from HFR (i-City TGV IMAX doesn't support HFR).

I sat at D11 and D12 and it was perfect for me.

Just watched John Wick 4 in IMAX (Central i-City), movie is great and the sound dayum. Especially the first scene (the fist punching scene, I can feel the pain by just watching the scene + sound)

Great review as usual from the MVP here!

Oppenheimer and Mission Impossible coming out next month!

As both are shot with IMAX camera, definitely going to IMAX theatres for these 2. Question is which one to go?
a) IMAX Laser at IOI City East (better picture quality but screen is smallest)
b) IMAX at Sunway Velocity (might be able to showcase the taller aspect ratio of IMAX better than the one in i-City, as shared by @Katharsis previously)
c) IMAX at Central i-City

Velocity should be better for Oppenheimer cause of the taller screen. For Mission Impossible, IOI or I-City. I remembered you said you prefer bigger screens so I-City suits you best.

Mission Impossible has tall aspect ratio scenes too right?

According to IMDB, MI7's tallest aspect ratio scenes are 1.9:1 aspect ratio, which majority of the IMAX halls in Malaysia mostly follows in dimension (IOI City Mall Laser IMAX is exactly 1.9:1, I-City is super close at 1.77:1, slightly taller so will have some letterboxing), no taller scenes ala 1.43:1 like Oppenheimer and Dune 2.

The only 2 very tall IMAX screens in Malaysia (that supports 1:43 films very well) are TGV Sunway Velocity in KL and TGV Vivacity Mall in Kuching. These are the two locations I would visit for Oppenheimer.

Screen size and dimensions can be found in LFExaminer (though ceased operations, haven't updated since late 2021).

Hey I was doing a bit more research, and found out that IMAX Xenon (the non-laser version) can only project 1:9:1 aspect ratio even if the screen is 1:43:1.

That means Oppenheimer will still be projected in 1:9:1 aspect ratio in Sunway Velocity despite the venue has 1:43:1. That's a bummer cry.gif

Hey man. Back early 2022, I'd watched Dune 1 (which had 1.43:1 scenes) in Velocity IMAX and I distinctly remembered few scenes of the film stretched taller, using almost the entire screen. Velocity's aspect ratio is taller than 1.43:1 at 1.33:1. Velocity uses dual 2k Xenon projectors which help compensate for the higher aspect ratio (there were older posts here that mentioned Velocity's IMAX uses dual 2k Xenon projectors, which should help achieve that 1.43:1 size. This is also why I saw Dune 1 stretch as tall as it did). I could be wrong but it wouldn't hurt to try. Also if I'm right, I'm be so sad cause I usually watch movies at cinema alone and I can't find a partner to justify for that stupid couple seat which are also the best positioned seats there.

Also an update, a few days ago, news broke out that Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 will only be 2.39:1. Chilaka, I booked IMAX tickets already before hearing this news. Anyway, upon doing a bit of research and reading articles, IMDB's info can be edited by anyone, so previously, it mentioned 1.9:1 alsong with the usual 2.39:1. I assume this was written as speculation as there wasn't any concrete info about MI7's aspect ratio. However, the film heavily marketed to be an IMAX film so the expectation for tall height was promised. Anyway, pretty bumped out right now as I could have saved money opting for BIG DA instead. Maybe the MI7 vs Oppenheimer IMAX screening slots and having Oppenheimer won out in the end may have influenced this change, I'm not sure. Anyway ooof.
*
Yeah, Sunway Velocity seating arrangement really is the worst.

Gutted for MI7, holding a tiny hope that the news isn't 100% true, let's see.

Now I'm rethinking to watch MI:7 on IMAX and saving up for Oppenheimer. Would you recommend the Atmos Maxx @IOI? It's not exactly much cheaper.... (RM29.50 vs RM35 for IMAX Laser) or should I just stick to IMAX?

I hear the Imax seats are better, plus the IOI City's Atmos Max hall is handicapped by the D-Box seats and I find the immediate front rows just bit too near. Heck, think might just settle for the newer "vanilla" 2D hall at IOI 2 East and hope the audio is decent enough.
*
Having tried both MAX Atmos hall and IMAX Laser at IOI City Mall, IMAX laser is definitely better. Screen quality is definitely better (brighter and crisper), and given the price difference is just RM5, definitely go for IMAX!

Personally I will still stick to iCity IMAX, purely because of the screen size and not so bad screen quality (think laser might still be better but its definitely good enough for me).

MAX DA is worth considering if you're watching on Wed. I remember getting a ticket below RM20.

Ok since IMAX Central iCity have the best IMAX, which I really agree.
Even the Deluxe halls is just amazing.
The screen and sound system is just nice.

Which is the best seat based on the current condition?
Thinking to switch my target from Sunway Velocity to Central iCity.

I love to sit up front, and my favorite row is row G. Fills up your whole peripheral vision and close to the speaker in front to feel the bass.

Though some people might feel it's a bit too near (you might need to move your eyes around a bit to see the whole screen), but it's how I like it, to feel immersed!

I'll be traveling from East Coast to see Interstellar in September (the GSC event one). I don't think I care too much about xenon vs laser thing but I'm looking for big screen with nice sound system because Interstellar.

Anyone can help with recommendation?

This is my benchmark screen size (Auckland IMAX):

So far GSC has not announced whether Interstellar will be re-released in IMAX, but if you dont care too much about Xenon and Laser (visual clarity), Central i-City is the best choice for screen size and sound system.

Just watched Interstellar re-release in Lalaport 4DX.

Was a bit disappointed - there was only seat movement. No fan, water the no air nozzle beside your ear effect.

There was some cool moments especially when the spaceship is launching, but overall experience was nowhere near Top Gun Maverick's level. Probably better to watch this re-release in BIG isntead.

My goto cinema is MBO BigScreen at ElementX Melaka, pretty much top notch in terms of PQ (but I usually get annoyed by the light from the keluar sign) and SQ for me.

At times I also went to watch movies when I was outstation... last I recalled was TGV KLCC Hall 1 for Transformers. This hall is laoya  sweat.gif . Then my friends was telling me to try out IMAX (which I have not, cause there's no IMAX in Melaka...)

What I've surveyed is, the one at IOI City Mall is a dual laser? Is this a 1.9:1, and if the SQ is up to standard?
*
IOI City IMAX is Single Laser, (can project 1:9:1, but now 1:43). The screen is 1:9:1 so there's minimal black bars.

Sound quality is great, IMAX has its standards so can't go wrong.

Picture quality should be the best in Malaysia, slight downside is the screen isn't very big (as compared to other IMAX in Malaysia, eg iCity), but still a damn good place to watch movies!

So after the slight disappointment with 4DX, I went back to Lalaport for Interstellar round 2, but this time in BIG cinema.

It was great! The screen size is big (I felt its quite similar to IOI City IMAX)! What impressed me the most is the sound quality, its quite powerful (maybe not as bassy vs IMAX), but definitely better than most non IMAX halls. The sound imaging is great, arguably better than IMAX, as IMAX tend to be overpowering (but thats what I love about IMAX, boom boom). I dont have a good pair of eyes for picture quality, but it seems perfectly fine to me.

Only downside I can say is the seats isn't very comfortable (less cushion and no recliner), and the hall is FREEZING COLD, so do bring your thick jacket (my thin jacket wasnt enough)!

Recommend to sit at the second/third last row (last row is couple seats).

Priced at RM22 with free parking at Lalaport (the shopping mall building, dont park at GSC building), this definitely is worth the bucks!

bad experience for me watching interstellar on BIG Tropicana Gardens. the aspect ratio is not suitable, the big black bars is very apparent. BIG reportedly equipped with 4k laser projector but from the image quality its doesnt appear to be at that resolution. maybe the digital source they got is just 2k but projected in a big screen?? resulting subpar image quality. watched imax laser recently for oppenheimer and the image quality is leagues ahead, it was stunning. the only positive things i can say for that experience is that the screen size is massive and the pricing isnt too bad which was rm22. was very excited for the dark knight next month, but from that experience maybe i just watched it on standard hall.
i have to agree with this, although the leather was nice, the lack of cushion and very hard armrest really sticks out. for premium experience you'd thought GSC would provide better seats.
*
Have you tried BIG at lalaport? Interstellar looks good to me in that hall. Might be Tropicana-only issue?

Any guess on the location?

My guess:
New: Pavillion Bukit Jalil
Upgrade: 1 Utama, Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity
