contemplating between the Porlex Tall Hand Grinder and Baratza Virtuoso... i know... price wise its RM230 vs SGD399

i'll be making at most 2 cups a day (with my wife) using a french press, so not sure whether its advisable to spend on a mechanical grinder?

disregarding the price, anyone has experience with both of them? and what's the grind quality like?

mind sharing a short review of your grinder...

was very disappointed today cos i just bought a Bodum Chambord and couldn't find ground coffee to go with it...

most of the retailers sell beans instead... need to look for a grinder

I wrote about my NS MCF, its an entry level machine. I got it used from a cafe place. if U are concern with stale coffee, it does waste a little coffee when U grind as U need to throw out some when U start the day or between each dose. it requires more work on cleaning. for a us$250 deal I am ok with the trouble,

I hope to score this one day.. maybe years later

couldn't resist and i got myself a Porlex temporarily until i can find a suitable grinder... Either Baratza or Breville

thanks for the info bro

U doing french press now, do u plan to upgrade?
What's your budget now?
*
previously was drinking those off the shelf Japanese drips from Key/UCC

then started with French press recently since i prefer lighter coffee compared to sspresso, unless its a cappucino

might not be upgrading so soon, my parents have an epresso machine at home, but its use more for making long blacks rather than espresso

i don't mind getting a machanical grinder once i start making more cups tongue.gif

the pharos was too bulky so went for the porlex, not easy to find too...

limited choice... franchises and shopping malls aside... the usual fresher beans are local roasters using imported beans... either blends or single origins...

i have a bag of single origin columbian beans which i'm waiting to try after finishing my starbucks pike's place roast...

will take a lot of time to try out different origins since a standard bag is not small sweat.gif

and i'm unsure which will be a better choice for french press, blends or single origins?

thanks for the site by the way smile.gif
have yet to see any organic beans locally...

by the way... interesting site... can basically gauge the characteristics of the bean's origin thumbup.gif

Beans past 3weeks their roast date consider stale.
Some ppl throw it out and not use, others don't care claim it taste no diff in a French press.

In espresso machine stale beans less creama
*
can't drink them on time too... 250gm of beans is a lot sweat.gif

there's a difference... i grinded 100gm of that stale starbucks beans and after 2 weeks, the aroma as half gone... now it taste like... normal brewed coffee that you get in hotels laugh.gif

how much beans U using each time U make french press.
I thought u make daily for 2 persons.. there are many guide on how much beans to use key is freshly ground beans. don't ground 100gm and use it over 2-3 days.
250gm of beans if U making for 2, each time U should be using 40-50gm of coffee. only take 5 days to finish 250gm.

actually i'm using 25gm with 400ml of water... which is a little more than the normal 1:17 ratio... 40gm to 400ml will be too strong

didn't have a choice that time since i couldnt get the Porlex grinder...

and preggy wife just took 2-3 mouths out of that 2 cups, ended i had trouble sleeping cos the starbucks beans have very hich caffeiene content doh.gif

so now just make a cup and share during the weekends

thanks for the sites, maybe i can try that ratio with more stale beans laugh.gif

Preggy no coffee man, my wife stay away at all cost.
U don't like strong coffee..
I like my strong, used to double shot.
*
trying my best to control her laugh.gif
anyway, its 2-3 mouth a week... and i always ensure she dilutes and flush all that down with lots of water after coffee

i can take double shots if its cappucino, too strong if its long black...

by the way, couldn't resist and opened up the single origin columbian beans this morning doh.gif
funny thing is, it got more and more sour after every sip... the barista told me its mild acidity... water not hot enough?

good luck!

some ppl have very good palate can taste stale coffee easily even using any brewing method.
so many rules ppl use.. 15, 12. not seen anything longer.
on coffeegeeks most ppl refuse to buy starbucks.. no date == stale coffee the moment u buy it.
others  (few/handful) will just stock a 5lb beans and use them slowly without telling much difference.
bottom-line let your tongue decide.
*
tried it again but still sour... maybe its supposed to be sour? it's actually not bad, just that i prefer acidicity to be at the minimum...

i might try a slightly longer brewing time... and many increase the coffee...

thanks for your help bro thumbup.gif
