Just wondering, do you guys recommend getting grinder/machine from TaoBao? Was browsing around and came across Baratza there. A bit worry about the authenticity though...

I have Aeropress and Poemia. I like the coffee from Aeropress more. Maybe my bean is "aged". Coffee from Poemia is just ... ... dull.
Presentation wise Poemia coffee looks good (due to the pressurized portafiler). I ever removed the pressure thing to make it non-pressurized plus tamping the coffee. It had almost zero crema and tasted not much better too. As I said, the bean might be too aged. And I don't have a proper grinder too. Have a blade grinder only. Also I have difficulty frothing good milk with Poemia. Drank lots of milk from trial and error |

QUOTE(patryn33 @ Nov 10 2014, 11:06 PM) age beans aeropress or frenchpress seem to perform better. Ya man. Sourcing Hario. Black Friday coming so maybe tag together with other items these type of machine better use the pressurize filter. blade grinder is bad, get a Hario cheap grinder only ~US$40 on amazon. getting the bubbles right for late art is never easy for expensive machine. it takes lots of trial and error and practice. expensive machine provides power steam does the job faster.. easier perhaps.. there is always a human factor. For stepping down, I heard you need 3x the wattage to have full performance. To me it not worth the trouble at all. That transformer cost a lot.
I almost hooted a Brevile ($200 plus USD) some time back and the same went OOS very fast. Heng didn't buy. |

Blade grinder actually quite bad one... It tend to grind until all powder stick together. So during grinding need to shake shake shake. Coffee come out also more on the bitter side. I got a Krups one. Now me buying ground coffee instead. If bean then grind at the shop.
I read someone here using Akira (M 520A or something) grinder. Just wondering how is it compared to angmor brand electric burr grinder, particularly on espresso. One of the coffee shop boss also recommended me that grinder. According to him, the grinder does a good job. |

QUOTE(mel5582 @ Dec 3 2014, 06:30 PM) I would not recommend this grinder for espresso. It has 9 steps ranging from espresso till French press.. But if you're grinding mainly for espresso, this machine will not be sufficient. This is because espressos requires minute adjustments to the grind, specific to the type of beans used. With 9 steps, you're jumping from Turkish to espresso, then to medium fine, medium.. So on. What if the grind required for a proper extraction falls in between the Turkish and espresso setting? Ya. This is what I heard too. That's why collecting opinion from all over. Further more I make espresso most of the time.If you're looking for a stepped grinder, look for more steps.. Like the Rancilio Rocky has 50 steps. The Akira grinder is better suited for brewing filter coffee or other methods that are more flexible and requires course grinds. On the side note, kopi kaki here seems more experienced than those I met on another forum |

Came across another grinder from TB. Locally it's really quite limited choice ah. It's either super high end or super low end. Nothing in between one.
This is the one I bio dao... Wellhome ZD-15 and ZD-16. ZD-15 is basically Sunbeam (and many others too like Metek) re-batch. While ZD-16 has more grinding size (40). ZD-15 only has 25. This post has been edited by geney: Dec 6 2014, 08:35 PM |

QUOTE(Keng @ Dec 9 2014, 03:45 PM) Thanks for sharing, gonna give this a try. Been failing for like almost every time, probably I shouldn't keep switching with pannarelo and without, but now mostly without. Need you to share more tips here I'm using (Philips) Saeco Promia and in my third week now. Yet to depressurize the PF as I'm still waiting for my tamper to arrive. Grinder is Hario Slim, easy choice for low budget but I've ordered Welhome ZD-15 grinder, again, still waiting. Back to topic, I've only successfully froth it once to the foam level that I wanted in out of say, 20 tries |

Just now did another try. Sudah bengang liao... Removed everything left only the metal stick. Then found out I need a smaller pitcher
The milk was just nice about 1/2cm covering the tip. Then the milk macam like Cappuccino liao Without the sleeve however, I think it has more control. So next time I'll try again with the "naked" setting Getting a smaller pitcher too. 12oz ones. |

QUOTE(wadthehellz @ Dec 10 2014, 12:38 AM) Yea I also feel that naked is better if not my milk grow big bubble everywhere in few seconds time and then feels bad haha. You get your equipments from taobao or local? Wanted to get from TB but cannot wait leh... But locally (Singapore) even pitcher is damn ex sia... Normal normal jiu 40 plus Singkapor dollar liao. So ended up buying from forum. I know the seller bought from Amazon and markup quite a fair bit but OK lah. Cheaper than local market. From TB even cheaper if you can wait. Think RM30 (before shipping) can get good 12oz ones. |

QUOTE(ijan @ Dec 11 2014, 03:11 PM) Keng, you have the Poemia with the Panarello steam wand? Should be, so you should follow the Panarello instruction. These tip theoretically make steaming straightforward. If im not wrong, insert the tip till it reach the bottom of the pitcher and froth to your hearts desire. Krups various steam wand also work in the same manner. Thus Mel's technique not valid in your situation. Don't know leh... QUOTE(Keng @ Dec 11 2014, 03:37 PM) Yes, exactly this type Geil suggested to scoop away about 1/2cm of the bubble on top before pouring.![]() The thing is by the time the bubble reaches the breather hole (its located at the joining instead of at the middle of the plastic cylinder like the 1 you shared), the volume would've increased too much to my liking I'll have to knock dozens of time for the big bubble to burst |

QUOTE(Keng @ Dec 14 2014, 02:07 PM) Haha, trying to make the best out of what I have at the moment first. Yeah, i saw that before too but I thought the small steam hole would restrict it before filling up the rest of the camber in the plastic. How big is the camber/shaft in that plastic? Quite nice wor...My attempt this morning Me haven't reach that level yet despite playing with the machine for a while liao. Problem is I don't drink every day and the max is 1 cup per day. The common drawback for this ppf I think is the fake crema. Seems always very bubbly. Then you do art also like not as nice. By the way, Keng, do you find the coffee come out a bit runny/watery most of the time? Taste wise I think still acceptable. Some of the cafe I visited also about this standard only but they charge you like close to $4 Singkapore lollar. |

QUOTE(mel5582 @ Dec 16 2014, 09:02 AM) Yeah, machines without the 3 way solenoid valve, you only need to descale. You can descale once every 6 months for Malaysian water[I]. Typically it's every 3 months preferred, but our water is clean. You buy those liquid or tablets, then dump into the water reservoir and fill the tank up. Let the machine run through the tank. Then fill with clean water and through that as well. Your kopi make me thristy leh... Like Gaggia Classic has a 3 way solenoid valve, you would have to backflush it. Backflushing prevents clog in the valve.. E61 is the group, that one can clean or replace the shower screen. And today's morning kopi.. Pacamara house blend Filtered water need descale mah? Not RO water though. Still got mineral one. |

QUOTE(Keng @ Dec 22 2014, 08:08 PM) Just got my electric grinder. It's so much easier to make espresso in the morning ....... Or so I thought. Basket clogged on first shot despite checking the usual coarseness by rubbing them with my fingers. Poemia in red very chio sia Wasted blardy 20gm there. Then second shot was too coarse. Oh man, these things are never easy eh Maybe try with cheap coffee first. Bon Cafe ones rather cheap. |

I'll always finish my ground coffee, good or bad. Those older (aged) ones probably will make it more GAO and ice it. Kopi peng very nice
Used groud coffee will fill them in a bottle, then put in toilet with the cap open. Very nice when you shower with coffee smell This post has been edited by geney: Jan 6 2015, 08:23 AM |
