Carb is simple but you need good tuner to tune the optimum setting. Not all tuner can tune the right setting unless have experience. Efi is slightly complicated from the looks but if there's any problem you can read out what the engines crying out from the engine. Efi can be easy to tune. Just plug and tune. Any guy can do it with basic knowledge. There's a list of pros and cons.

Bot else you can play with open pod, pnp, high cam, vs etc. But thenprice you pay and the power you get is no where near bot except changing the engine.

You still young, take your time doing it up, maybe by that time you can afford to, you can buy one instead of mod one. Of course if new cannot get at first there are older Evo 6 and 7 that you can look if not some Subaru WRX ver. 6 or 7.....  or cheapest is get a VR4 like me.......
