QUOTE(salabianca @ Nov 3 2006, 02:09 PM)
planning to get a jrt, to keep our german shepherd at home company... is this a sound idea? we've been thinking of getting a smaller sized dog with good personality

my husband and i do a lot of outdoor activities - hiking and swimming mostly, and we usually bring our gsd along... would this be a good idea with the jrt?
*

As hojeff mentioned, both breeds cn b fairly dominant so may not b ideal 4 each other. Really depends on d individual JRT, coz deir personalities cn range from friendly to feisty. If ur defination of 'good personality' = nice, friendly n well behaved, den d JRT breed may fall short of ur expectation rclxub.gif .

GSDs hv strong prey drive n may mistake a speedy white JRT for a rabbit n gv chase. My JRT hs bn chased by a number of large dogs b4 ... most times, d larger dog is in play mode. Other times, my JRT is feisty n fierce enuf 2 stand his ground till d other dog backs up. sweat.gif

thumbup.gif Outdoor activities n a large backyard r ideal 4 JRTs. D more exercise dey get, d more settled dey r at home. However, offleash runs r not recommended unless u hv a reliable recall n d environment is safe n secure. JRTs hunt on sight n dey'll naturally gv chase to any small, fast moving object.

If u still intend 2 get a JRT, make sure dat both dogs do get along well. JRTs tend to get along better with K9s of d opposite sex. cool.gif

QUOTE(hojeff @ Nov 7 2006, 10:36 AM)
i'm now teaching my boy the 'drop dead' trick...any suggestion for me to get this started?
*

Hv yet 2 c a JRT executing d 'play dead' trick well. Dese guys r more keen on tricks involving movement eg. weaving thru legs, spinning n jumping tricks. Dey dun really enjoy staying still 4 any period of time drool.gif ... of course, there r exceptions.

If u r still keen, cn try dis:
If he knows how 2 'belly up' ie. lie on back n expose his belly for a good rub, den all u hv 2 do is get him to stay still whilst in d 'belly up' position. Once he is comfortable with dis position, add a command n hand signal eg. 'Bang' n fingers shaped like a gun.

Sounds easy rite ... d tricky part is 2 get him 2 stay still with his belly exposed. whistling.gif JRTs arent exactly d submissive type, but good luck anyway. cool.gif

While he is friendly with all dogs,I worry abt the small ones as he plays very roughly with them. (with the exception of Groovy,he's a fiesty one! I can rely on him to teach my GSD some manners cool.gif ).
*

Yup Salabianca, u really shld hv a word with Reality coz she owns all manners n size of dogs at d same time, including an active n friendly GSD.

RD, thks for d promo on groovy's abilities. Again, not too proud of it coz hv 2 keep watch on him most of d time. whistling.gif Did u manage 2 catch d Protection dog demo at Subang ... supposed 2 b an imported Czech GSD, big n black fella.

Hope to c u guys again on 19 Nov at BU park. cool.gif

notworthy.gif Apologies on d delay in running of some of d Carnival Games (due to trials dragging on a little). Know dat some of u were looking forward to d Best Kisser n dis was held late towards d end. Was quite an amusing game n will schedule it earlier at future events.

cool.gif Saw dis fella on Carnival Day ... Tyrell? Also met Piper n Dookie, n must hv missed d rest.

yes this is Tyrel...my cute little rascal..saw you too...very impress with Groovy during the presentation...Ty'rel watching no stop...full attention...1st time see my boy so focus...hmm..guess it's time for him to learn agi class.....any new class opening soon?
*

Having good focus is a plus. To do agility, he'll need some basic OB skills eg. come, stay, sit. If he can focus on u well n enjoys running around with u, den dats a definite advantage. tongue.gif

i unleashed my boy and play chase with him...as for come, sit stay...he understand the message....but cannot stay long....hmmm...in that case i'll take my boy to OB class 1st...see u guys in few months time for the agility class....
*

How old is Tyrell? U dun really need perfect OB skills for agility. As long as ur dog is friendly, follows u n hs a fair recall, dats good enuf. Some OB training is good to hv but b careful not 2 diminish ur JRT's natural drive in d process. Once d drive is gone, its very hard to get back. cool.gif

Tyrel is 6 months old by next month. I'm joining but wat's the time? Is shadow in the class too???? Maybe Tyrel keen to meet with his kin...hehehehe
*

cool.gif Still a very young pup. Proper agility training will only commence ven dog is 1 yo to gv time for d joints 2 grow n fuse properly. But nothing to stop u from introducing mini-obstacles dat dun require much jumping eg. sliding under blankets, stepping on wooden plank, pausing on foot stool etc.

Since he is still very young, wld recommend taking up some puppy OB classes. After which he shld b ready for some mini-agility. Subang school is from 5-6pm, Sundays. Shadow is doing OB at Tmn Desa.

Tks for d vote of confidence ... life's simple but never dat easy whistling.gif . A lot will depend on d owner's time n commitment to training n playing with his dog. Need to do a fair bit of homework for any team to succeed in agility.

The OB test is on the 31st! Well we hope he do well.. we nvr forget he's all JRT cool2.gif ACtually is the exposure we want.. After this we will move to Agility .. Fawn, does JRT makes well with Beagles? I know of same sex agressions, so was thinking of taking a female beagle.  hmm.gif
*

icon_rolleyes.gif Good luck on ur test, may drop by 2 look c as well.

Beagles r quite energetic n requires plenty of exercise as well, so b prepared. JRTs n Beagles play just as rough so dey may get in2 minor squabbles once awhile. Think dey r fairly neutral with each other coz dey r independent n like 2 do deir own things. But dis does not necessarily apply 2 all. whistling.gif
