As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

RVP didnt really has much pre-season game time hence might be too early for a start but you will never know what SAF is thinking unsure.gif

I don't know which team you are supporting by calling it that, but you are definitely not supporting Man Utd or Manchester United. So I think you are on the wrong thread. This thread is about Man Utd or Manchester United not about man u or whatever that team is.

I have a feeling SAF gonna use 4-2-3-1 today.

-------------De Gea----------
Rafael - Carrick - Vidic - Evra
-----Cleverley - Scholes-----
Valencia -- Kagawa -- Young/Nani
-------------Rooney----------

I think he'll start with that.

RVP will not start i think. Kagawa-Rooney upfront. Rio is out, though some suggested it just a rumour. Carrick-Vidic then. We need to held majority of possession. Everton are very good in midfield.

This sums up fans mentality. After one game, the knives are out already!
He is quality. You don't start for one of the best teams around in a CL final if you are shit. But like with most kids, they make mistakes.

if you watch A LLOOOT of games he played, you should also know that he was injured A LOTTTTTTT

what fabio needs now is constant game time, which is unlikely since Evra is ironclad on the starting position, loaning him out wasn't because he's not good enough, it was because he badly needed the game time

Smalling and Evansgot injured end of last season. Had surgery last summer, but Smalling while recpvering got a setback so he's out longer. Jones hurt his back when he report for pre season..Evans only started training a while back, I guess not ready yet.

Wow! You watched "A LOTTT" of games where he plays? Awesome. Yes, he lacks focus, positioning and defensive discipline. But so does more than half the crop of young defenders/full backs. Look at Jones and even Rafael. They are impressive going forward but sometimes they get too caught up on the opponent's side that they forget their defensive responsibilities. If you opened your eyes a bit bigger and stop scrutizing only 1 particular player, you will realise that this is a common problem with young fullbacks in particular.

Where do you think he'll get more games? QPR as starting LB/RB or Man Utd as a reserve behind Evra and Rafael/Smalling/Jones? Do you know how flawed your argument is. So David Beckham wasn't good enough, that's why he was loaned out to Preston North End? Jonny Evans wasn't good enough that's why he was loaned out to Antwerp?

I guess some people might be right here... there is a reason why Evra always starts and Fabio did not even if he is fit... They have no question starting Rafael on the RB but for fabio?? furthermore, getting in a new LB definitely do not help Fabio situation... but let see what SAF will do... i will certainly still wish Fabio can terrorize opponent with rafael on the opposite flank...

What do you expect? He only turned 22 last month, and have very little playing experience. And with kids, mistakes are the norm. SAF loan him out because he wants Fabio to play regularly. He won't get that with us because:
A) Evra
B) with us having lots of kids at the back as well, and Rio in and out of the team often, Evra(& Vida now hes back) is the only mainstay at the back. Thats why rain or shine, he starts all the time.
C) Backup role ain't enough to aid his development. Because of injuries, he's well behind..so a season out in EPL could be the making of his. He did very well 2 seasons back playing regularly whrn Rafael got hurt. So we know he is quality.

But like most kids, mistakes happens. Did you remember how CR played in his first 3-4 seasons with us?

That's where you are wrong. I'm just putting things into a clearer prespective. You are too set in your opinion so I decided to correct you.

1. You said Fabio has no focus and I said, Rafael and Phil Jones suffer from the same thing. Especially in terms of positioning, which is why I prefer Jones on RB for now instead of CB.

2. You said Fabio is out on loan because you think SAF doesn't think he's good enough but again, you stand corrected as 1 of the best right wingers to put on a Man Utd jersey has been out on loan before.

and....the biggest of all: our very own gaffer, SAF

Don't mistaken. No one is slamming you. This is just my opinion too. I've watched him during Rafael absence. He's more than capable. But that is during his time playing in the right. Maybe take time for him to adapt to playing in the left

Evans went to Antwerp, Sunderland in Championship and then in EPL for half a season each. Welbeck after he broke through, went to Preston where they didn't think he did well, then went to Sunderland and after a slow start, he won them over eventually. Fletcher hardly impress early on..and it wasnt until he was 25 before he started performing well regularly. So to those Ando doubters, remember that.

Added on August 20, 2012, 1:38 pmShock horror, Fabio also don't have enough experience. Read what I posted about his situation.
Going by your claims about Fabio, did it also meant that we also didn't think Welbeck would make it by sending him out on loan after starring for us before that?

Wahh I remember when everyone seems to despised Fletcher on the team sheet! I always defended him, said he could really pass and always try to win the ball back, but everyone just meh me.

He played full 90 minutes for the U-21, hopes he comes back sooner than later.

Everybody lose hope over him. But he was really a big game player in those days. Then he got to 25, and everythink went his way.
Heck, the same happened to Nani. Inconsistent and even the most loyal believers in him started o lose hope until he turn it around a year back.
There arelessons to be learnt there..or maybe not.

Yeah. Good news about his U21's outing. Hope he does come back properly this time. We really could use another able body in the middle.

Even at that moment, he isn't our first choice.

Certainly for sure, he will need to bulk up physically. And injuries do really hinder his progress, time will tell how good the Da Silva twins can be.

The problem with Fletcher was SAF played him on the right wing at times and I always hated Fletcher on the right wing. He's not fast, not tricky and not a good crosser. But I was always impressed with him when he played CM. I just hoped that SAF would stop playing him on the right wing.

I remember the whole world hated on Evans.

now he's actually doing great.

because he's got used to his mistakes on the field, and then now he's learned from his mistakes in becoming a god damn solid Vidic sidekick.

I hope Fabio can do the same as well. I can see him playing almost all games for QPR, provided that he doesn't get any injuries.

but it was kinda worrying when I watched him play against Swansea. loses the ball quite frequently whenever he has it.

takes time bro, takes time.

Beckham went out on loan, and now he has 3 kids and a semi-hot wife. (oh also some championship trophies but that's not important right now)

That Kid also went out on loan, and now Manucho's gone thanks to him.

evans hate is like carrick...one season of some inconsistency and ppl start slating him...few seasons back then he was doing great for a 21/22 year old partnering vidic during rio's absence

de gea lindegaard rafael rio vidic smalling evans evra buttner valencia kagawa scholes carrick fletcher anderson giggs cleverley nani young bebe rooney welbeck hernandez van persie berbatov

25 men...fletcher should be included, who knows he can recover to play some games...he started playing in the u-21s already
*
i dont think SAF will take the risk just yet. i'm gonna assume that for the whole season, he's gonna be playing in reserves to get full fitness.

something is not right in that list.

someone's going out for sure.

I don't know which team you are supporting by calling it that, but you are definitely not supporting Man Utd or Manchester United. So I think you are on the wrong thread. This thread is about Man Utd or Manchester United not about man u or whatever that team is.

Added on August 20, 2012, 11:50 am

I have a feeling SAF gonna use 4-2-3-1 today.

-------------De Gea----------
Rafael - Carrick - Vidic - Evra
-----Cleverley - Scholes-----
Valencia -- Kagawa -- Young/Nani
-------------Rooney----------

I think he'll start with that.
*
Then my bad, man utd then or rather Manchester United. Hope u satisfied rolleyes.gif im stating that i'l support man utd this season becoz I like their squad.. I always favor man utd play style.. but most of d tym I hate their arrogant fan.. no offense tho, sum true fans are very nice. icon_rolleyes.gif

we've got 5 very decent center backs, problem is we can't get even 2 of them fit? zzzz

looks like we will be really shaky when defending then tonight....Fellaini, Pienaar, and Jelavic are not easy to deal with sweat.gif sweat.gif

Nah, he still young n learning.. Name me top world class full back never made a defensive mistakes in their early 20s..
Fabio, like his brother are typical Brazilian fullback /wingback. They learned more attacking arts than defending.
The likes of Alves or Maicon are known for defensive fragaility and lapse in their early career. They become world class only after 25++ yo something.
Fabio reached a phase he need to play week in week out. Loan are right option for him since Evra have a good injury records.

fellaini is reported also having an injury, so if that's true it should lessen the burden of our defense, but Jelavic when on form is also a pain in the arse to handle.... sweat.gif

(oh also some championship trophies but that's not important right now)

it was bad if it were to happen in the middle of the season, to be honest. Isn't that the season where we were soundly beaten by Fulham and Rooney made a transfer request and refuses to sign the contract?

well i am gonna predict this lineup:

DDG

Rafael--Evans (yeah, i know)--Vidic--Evra

Carrick--Cleverley

Valencia--Kagawa--Nani

Rooney

i chose Evans because he was seen in the RvP training pics, so he might be just fit enough to be fielded....might be wrong though, but we will see

Can't effing wait for kick-off, Persie, Kagawa, Rooney, Hernandez, Valencia, and many others - the team is rife with attacking options. So many possible (ruthless) formations.

Don't think I've been this excited since the 08/09 season. biggrin.gif

Super excited about our season opener, cannot sleep lol.. Interesting lineup, Valencia ahead of Rafael at right back and Welbeck ahead of RvP. SAF maybe wants to ease RvP into our system of play, he only got one or two days training with the team.

I thought i was the only one rclxms.gif. I really hope he moves on to other club, i want to see him play.
Chica won't suceed at Chelsea, no Rooney and Giggs. Chica is way more poacher type than Torres, not suit us.

"I've left out Chicharito because of the protection I need to give us in case something happens to one of my centre-backs." - SAF

But still, Berba > Chicha? And SAF not even listed Berba in PC before this.

Kagawa is superb tonight. His defence spliting pass to Welback was phenomenal.... Too bad he didnt score.

Take off Nani and place Young... Then Scholes for Van Persie.

Moyes, please sell Fellaini to us. laugh.gif laugh.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

With Jelavic Fellaini and Pienaar combo, I say 0-0 at HT is good for us. 2 tall target man plus 1 pacey AMC, and with only 2 fit defeders, nothing we can do especially contain Fellaini. sweat.gif

very very disjointed upfront. Not enough width, too congested in the middle.

Credits to Everton though, they crowded Rooney whenever he has the ball, and they press early.

im not surprised at this scoreline at all tbh altho i want a win, i guess most ppl only look on paper united should have won or at least drew this match without taking into consideration the starting lineup

fellaini against carrick, there's only one winner there...even vidic would have struggled against him

Evra need a break.
Cleverley and scholes owned. No force in midfield area.this is why we lost.
Nani's cross i dunno what to say.
Worst is rooney. Really rusty. First touch really bad.

Good thing was kagawa. I like this playing style. Know when to keep or pass.

1touch so bad...
game run oso bad.....alway stick 2gether so nearby...
carrick n nani especially....soft + kinda lazy wanna move...keep make sloppy pass...

rooney + welbeck+rvp oso not much chance of testing tim howard...
pui.....failure passing/1touch play....5finger can count finish...suck!

the only thing happy is vidic is back n de gea form...kagawa passing kinda impress...

we need to bed RvP and Kagawa in, stand to reason they wont perform well, its the old players that should be carrying the team until they acclimatize to the team, problem is, almost all of them decided to doze off, we deserved the lost when the team was playing half sleep throughout the game

It was quite unfortunate we got RVP quite late.. He havent got time to gel with the other players. But his combo with Kagawa is a very good sign of things to come.

that's the problem, you know something is not right when the new player who is just playing his first BPL game out performed other team mates sweat.gif

lets just hope this is a temporary form problem (and the injury problem at the back)....

Usually when we counter, we do it so fast. Pas here & there, suddenly already in the penalty box. But watefak tonight, when counter, they want to pass here and there, slowly, give time for the everton player to come down somemore.... Aiyoo, cannot brain

valencia play as right wing...kinda out of position...
still can accept..

but nani? zzzzz....throughout d game complain+bad passing

rooney n kagawa need time 2 match....like ronaldo+rooney take 2nd year to see d result...hopefully faster la....

carrick? too soft for a CB....passing oso headache...

cleverly+vidic jz back not long from injury...scholes old d...acceptable..

since last season i nvr like welbeck.. he likes a sissy.. soft like a girl n keep losing all his chance..
valencia still the same sh*t.. everyone can read his movement.. n i just wonder how dare he asked for the no. 7..
nani.. all of us can cross higher than he crossed for corner!..
evra.. another same sh*t.. so many season also same style of playing.. predictable..
i would really rather to start rooney(forced to)-rvp-kagawa.. our wings have been long gone years ago..

Yeah, that made me think too....why is Welback on the left, when you can put Young?  rclxub.gif
*
my guess would be his better workrate compared to young, rmb young have been criticised for tracking back much last season

clearly it backfired tho...welbeck was only a threat when he was cutting in, we played like 4-3-3 at times

Definitely wrong tactics this time. Wasted a lot of crosses. New players will slowly get to adapt. Relax everyone. Not to worried since this is only first game.

just get our center backs healthy, and we're good to go...seeing Carrick as center back is just excruciating....also might as well investigate why the heck did our squad players got injured so easily (4 out of 5 unavailable? wtf is this shyt?!)

- Still, poor on set pieces, both attacking and defensive, no player marking on near post on Fellaini's goal, Carrick vs Fellaini was never a fair battle, i thought he was gonna be Vidic's

- Esp. in second half, repetitively and ineffective playing from wing, almost never try to penetrate from middle of the pitch, lack of through ball from the middle when in some occasions RVP/Rooney was in good position to receive it

- Kagawa was impressive, besides DDG of course, clearly Scholes Cleverley Kagawa showed glimpse of hope in the middle of misery

- Some players, most notably Rooney was off form

- Positioning of Welbeck was actually unique and in some cases effective, coming inside off the ball from left, caught up Everton's defender, but he's weak and has poor finishing, added the fact Everton's defender played superbly tonight, didn't yield any result

- harsh way to start the season, but a good wake-up call, they'll be on fire on next home match

rise and fight back!

Actually the game wasnt so bad but we lack a really good enforcer like keane. Thats why pundits are asking why we didn't but the energetic enforcer like busquets, bastien, etc.

If we have 1 he can help us win the ball back when we've lost it and protect the back 4. We have no one currently who can properly protect the back 4 except fletcher and he isn't anywhere near world class.

If you got to ask me, Rooney is much poorer in this match. So he should not be an automatic first 11 for the next match as well?

It is not we are poor (Rooney and Nani, looking at you now!), it's just Everton defended better. Distain and Jagielka are immense for crosses. They congested all avenues, leaving very little space to run at. Hibbert and Pienaar are solid defensively on the wings as well.

PS: The commentator was a bit spot-on when one was asked why Vidic wasn't picking up Fellaini on the corner. His partner answered "And what about Jagielka?"

It is not nice to be defeated, but, having weakened defence does contribute to the goal. Having said that, even though Kagawa is there, they didn't play much through him, or at least through the middle. They tend to play crosses more rather than try to play the ball in the middle, which clearly didn't work because we don't have a targetman there.

Kagawa looked neat and always moved into positions. I was wondering whether was it the tactics employed by SAF, or players haven't had confidence in Kagawa yet? Hopefully, in the next home game, they will redeem themselves and most of our defence back. Play that Buttner lad maybe, as Evra clearly needs a wakeup call. He looks complacent at times.

I was really really really disappointed with the way the goal was conceded. The first thing I thought to myself was, "Why isn't anyone marking the near post?" Next thing I know, Fellaini won the header and it went in that through that hole. I really do not understand why nobody was marking that post. A team of Everton's calibre will surely take advantage of that kind of mistake. Anyone with any ideas why that happened?

Disappointing start to the season. I can only hope they pick themselves up after this and do something better next time.

You need to understand. Welbeck cutting in was SAF's intention in the first place. Nani and Welbeck and Kagawa playing behind Rooney. The full backs giving width by overlapping on the outside. This is a very very different style of play with last season. There was a lot of promising passing through the middle, and the team had the option to pass wide if they needed to as well, but sadly there is still no fluency in their passing right now. They are simply not passing fast enough and their movement off the ball is not effective enough. It will take time to build that fluency and playing against Everton at Goodison is a very, very difficult place to test themselves on a style of play that they are still not familiar with in the first place.

I think people here are missing some point here... we are lack of choice at the back... against a very good aerial attacking Everton ... guess the reason why saf tried to use carrick.

The CM pair of clerverly + Scholes cannot help to protect the back four.... If you look at the Everton's defence... They actually park all their players in the middle which made MU attack from the middle more difficult... when we try to cross from wide... we had a poor crossing from nani and Evra was outplayed everytime by Everton's player.

Kagawa is the only good point I see so far from this match other than De gea good saves.. He is the ony one who keep running and asking for ball..

IMO, the weakest point in this match is the CM and the winger...

*
True.. what u said true.. if like what saf said about the competition within striker.. the 1 perform should stay.. out of form on the bench then.. perhaps.. next match rooney might start on the bench.. i would really like to see that.. luckily i didnt bash carrick.. CB not his post.. before the corner kick even started already expected that goal by just looking at the height.. sure da bao 1.. no choice.. cuz no other CB available.. but other position just plenty of them can play.. k la.. off to bed.. yawn.gif

just get either Evans or Rio fit and we will be ready to go...and also valencia should not be the RB (only when there's no other RB available)...

and to think that we will be playing Fulham who won 5-0 in their first game....without a proper defense....sigh

Dude. Chill man. This is only 1 game. It's a marathon. Not a sprint.
*
Watched the replay, and I thought the same. Miscommunication or no communication at all? Simple mistakes like that could cost us the league title. Then again, it is the first game. Everton is a hard team to beat, especially at home. Hopefully we will get the whole squad back soon, especially Rio. He is the former captain, and he is very vocal, and I am sure he would organized the defence during the set pieces.

Not an ideal start, but it wasn't that bad. Just that Everton played very well defensively.

Having said that, even though Kagawa is there, they didn't play much through him, or at least through the middle. They tend to play crosses more rather than try to play the ball in the middle, which clearly didn't work because we don't have a targetman there.
*
They tried to play through the middle in the first half, but it was too disjointed, too congested. Which lead to my remark that we are lacking width to spread their defenses a bit in the first half. Doesn't help that most corners doesn't beat the first man/no one attacking the post.

Some of the intricate passes are just behind the intended player, some are a bit overhit, a few first touches are just a bit heavy that their defenders can press instantly. Seems like they are trying to feel each other out. Hence, it is still early on.

That why wonder got any bigger size or tanker like DC in our reserve if compared to Carrick. Even inexperience and I also no expect can win Fellaini, but got size at least can hentam mar with Fellaini, no need lose like Carrick tongue.gif

Not Carrick haters here, just feel pity for him to play out of position and let others bash like no tomorrow. laugh.gif
*
I understand the frustration. But your suggestion is easier said than done.

We're talking about playing a young, inexperienced centerback against a well drilled and organized team like Everton. They'll just get raped. That just doesn't make sense no matter how you look at it. Carrick has experience and will always be the better choice. I agree with SAF completely here.

*
Actually I thought the team did try to play through the middle. Unfortunately Everton were simply too good in defence and did a damn good job crowding out the middle, forcing United to push the ball out wide. where United were simply ineffective with their crosses.

RVP too new to the team, Welbeck has a "bit" of form, and he's a bit biased to a locally-raised striker. (Welbeck is United born-and-bred).

I am thinking he is intending for Chicha to be the OGS in his comparision of the '99 strikeforce.

I've been thinking about this for some time and unless someone can come up with a better explanation, I can only come to the conclusion that this was a mistake made by one of the players, normally the full back. There can simply be no excuse to not guard your posts during a corner against a team of Everton's calibre.

That's what I think as well. They tried playing through the middle but Everton defended very well and did a good job congesting the middle. There was simply not enough fluency (maybe because the team wasn't used to playing like this) to break Everton's rock solid defence.

Actually United did have width in the form of Evra and Valencia. The problem was like what you said, the crossing was too poor and often couldn't beat the first man. And you highlighted another good point. No one attacked the posts. I think this was because the team was simply too disorganized and unfamiliar with the new playing style which is a mix of pass through middle and crossing from sides.

I agree. RVP was simply too new to the team. I cannot understand why people are questioning this decision. He only joined days ago. How the hell is he supposed to suddenly bed into the team who are themselves playing an unfamiliar style of football against a rock solid team like Everton?

SAF went with the safe choice and I agree with that decision. It would've been a draw if not for that silly goal that the team conceded from not guarding their near post in a corner.

And again, easier said than done. So just simply score more goals right? Who cares if you concede 10 goals? Just score 11? If we concede 11th goal at the 94th minute then just score a 12th goal in 94th minute + 10 seconds?

Yes the attack should score goals, but it's pointless when the defence is leaking goals.

And just how is RVP gonna manage when he had no pre season and no practice with the rest of the team whatsoever because he just joined days ago?

The fact that RVP looked anonymous vindicates the fact that he was a sub. He simply doesn't have enough training with the rest of the team yet.

Some of my thoughts from the game:-

1. Man Utd are going to have a tough time defensively as long as Carrick's playing a CB. As good as he is in midfield, he's not a CB and it shows.
2. Kagawa is pretty impressive. He showed good movement and awareness of players around him. His layoff to Cleverley which was cleared off the line by Jagielka was nice.
3. Nani, Welbeck and Evra had a pretty bad game. Nani with wayward crosses, Welbeck was hardly in the game and Evra just didn't stamp his authority going forward or even defensively
4. Too many crosses from the wings when none of our strikers are particularly good at headers. No more CR7 =( RVP plays better through the middle or drifting in.
5. Scholes seems to be playing the "Carrick" role, sitting deep in midfield while Cleverley links up midfield and the strikers. Didn't really notice him spraying the passes around much. Maybe his role requires him to play shorter passes like Carrick.
6. RVP needs more practice time to gel with the team. SAF mentioned this in the interview, they didn't get the best out of him but that's expected since it's his first game.
7. De Gea looks like he has his confidence at an all time high now. 180 turn from how he started last season. Looks like he's gonna be keeping Lindegaard out.
8. Tony V at right back seems alright for now as he works hard but they are missing his crosses on the right if he stays there. I'd rather have him back at right wing.

You know what, I have been thinking for a while now, and here is a suggestion before the transfer window closes....

Sell Berba and Nani, get Kaka on loan, and find a CB to sub for Ferdinand. 4 weeks of injury is an indication.

It was expected, that's why I don't have single Man Utd player in my fantasy team for this week at least biggrin.gif we never get good result against Everton, even when 3-1 up we still draw 3-3 last season, I expected a draw, but too bad we lost....it was a bad result but still acceptable for now, Everton always Man Utd taboo team sad.gif

Agreed on Berba. Nani I thought Juve wanted him so I was hoping we'd get a good price for him but no luck there. As for CB, I think when everyone comes back from injury, we'll be stacked. Rio and Vidic starting with Evans, Jones and Smalling as back up. Jones and Smalling also back up for RB. Looks like Ferguson doesn't really have much faith in Scott Wootton although people were saying he had a good pre-season.

Kagawa seems to be a tad too creative for the other players surrounding him to understand his play, hope the lads would gain better understanding of his play in order for us to fully utilize him.

He's more of a 1-touch passer, where we're used to hold the ball but heck his touches are really creative & unpredictable even by us seeing it on tv. The only player i can see gels up with him perfectly at the moment is Rooney and for the rest, either he needs to make more simple straightforward passing or the lads needs to keep up with him.

Either way, he look promising as a creative playmaker, good buy.

Yeah... I agree Kagawa seem to be too smart for his teammate to really follow his move. De Gea kept us in until the first goal. If not because of him, we are already doom in half time.

The one play that I feel playing worst is Nani (Evra come second). Too many poor crosses, too many poor passes.

Overall, I think they should let Kagawa organize the attack. He seem more to be doing it better than Scholes and Cleverley. Cleverley also playing poorly in first half.

I think we miss Valencia + Rafael combo on the right that provided the width and terrorized defenses countless times last season. The two have a very good mutual understanding between them and gel very well.

to simply put it - we missed Carrick in the middle of the park
if only he was playing there instead of covering for Ferdinand
I see a repeat of Everton if we don't sort out our defence asap...Fulham this weekend is another strong, physical team and they'll surely learn from Everton tonight

I totally watch that match yesterday and I kinda regret staying up.. Evra couldn't defend to save his life..and nani... he made so many mistake.. bring down the morale of the team...we look really lost when we attack.. nothing is linking..

But really yesterday is all about FELLAINI .. that fella ar I tell you.. alone destroyed us..

Added on August 21, 2012, 11:07 amI think it will hard for us to keep up with city this year... I just don't feel it when most our center backs are injured... Woeful injury crisis..

Don't just blame the both of them by saying they bring down the morale of the whole team. they are professional and it's a team game. When some players aren't playing well, others should pick up the slack. Having a bad game here and there is pretty common. Everyone has bad games. So don't go saying that it's because of Evra and Nani that they whole team morale drop and due to that we lost. It's the whole team.

not just nani, rooney was also dreaming the whole game,he lost the ball almost every single time after he got it

and for those who expect RvP to be instantly useful, go play your FM please

I believe RVP will make the impact real soon. He will slowly gel into the team. Less than 1 week he had been training with the others.

In the history of the League, no team has gone on to win the league when they lost their season's opener except for 1951/1952 & 1995/1996 season - both leagues were won by Manchester United.

Honestly i was impressed by how well kagawa played last night..his passes and link up play at least gave us something to cheer about..

Nani was horrible on the wing..perhaps one of those bad days for him but he cannot be performing like that week in week out..no point having RVP or even anyone else upfront if the crosses jz doesnt meet the target..

No point playing RvP if we keep playing in crosses period.

From the goal replay, about the near post guard problem, I think the left post is guard by Welbeck?Because after the goal saw he try to clear it out hmm.gif

I think this week against Fulham probably same back 4, Evans early will be back for next week, assume Ferguson don't want rush him back laugh.gif

Think you are being biased. If the same happened on Everton's end you'd be cheering loudly. I think in all fairness, the goal is legitimate. It was 1v1 and Carrick lost the battle of strength and positioning. Football is a physical game, just because a defender falls down from a jumping challenge doesn't mean he was fouled. They both jumped, Carrick got outmuscled and lost out. That's all.

I hate it when we Lost..but to have only 2 real defenders on the pitch And conceded only 1 goal is not too bad..valencia movement is limited on the RB..

Still wonder why no big club come and bid for him. Everton pay him for 16m, really worth every penny laugh.gif

probably because the bids will need to be huge (say 25m+) just to convinced the Everton board to sell coz they didn't bought him for cheap

the f**ker was winning everything, and even shake off our marking players like nothing....you'd think he was Messi/Ronaldo in afro yesterday, 1 man destroying the whole team

Okay maybe I was a bit harsh.. because I actually stayed up and watch the match.. really disappointed..

I probably could forgive nani..

But For Evra.. how many times have we seen a huge gab on the left wing... I mean literally.. At a point that you can actually see rooney running all the way back to the rescue... he is getting very comfortable at his position.. very complacent..

If we were playing city.. expect another trashing..

Anyways.. its over... Lookign forward to the next match.. we haven't seen the real Man Utd yet... Am still excited!!

Everton is difficult to beat, and Fellaini is monstrous. But Kagawa and De Gea really show some spirit there. De Gea is sharper than last season, Kagawa is a perfect man to link up midfielder and striker.

Our next match is against Southampton, who have shown an impressive gameplay against noisy neighbour City. Hope for some change in tactic and lineup, and expecting good comeback.
