If we are gonna talk about mistakes, we go a long way back. Back in Gerard Houllier's days, we were aiming for the up and coming Ronaldinho in 2001, before even the world know who heck he is. We were reluctant to pay $15 million to PSG. Then we refuse to pay $10.5 million to Sporting Lisbon to Cristiano Ronaldo in 2002 thinking it was too much. Then Samuel Eto'o actually begged GH to sign him instead of trying to land Djibril Cisse. I still remember the article "I am not as handsome as David Beckham but I am a better footballer than him". And Nicolas Anelka was actually settling down in Liverpool although on loan. We ended up getting Sinama Pongolle, Anthony Le Tallec, El-Hadji Diouf, Salif Diao and Bruno Cheyrou (future Zidane).
Then in 2006, Benitez thought Sergio Aguerro is a big risk and not worth the money and went on to sign Fernando Morientes.
Sigh... if those players have graced the Red shirt, wonder if we still be waiting for our 19th.
Oh oh and then there's signing Dirk Kuyt instead of Dani Alves, yes Kuyt has been a loyal servant but Alves is in my opinion the best wing back out there and that was when he was at his peak. And then H&G's refusal to grant Rafa funds for Jovetic. Perhaps signing Downing instead of Mata was there up for grabs.
If you think Houllier's days were a long way back, it goes even further back

The legendary Michael Laudrup was due to sign for Liverpool in 1983 on a 3 year contract, but Liverpool at the last minute changed the contract to 4 years and Michael decided not to join and joined Juventus instead.
It's blunders like these that made us where we are today. At an era of globalization where all the big clubs and big club wannabes are cashing in on marketing potential, we were sitting back taking a chill pill basking ourselves in our long but diminishing glory.

My thoughts exactly on Gerrard. I've always seen him dropping further back as age catches on. It's a natural progression as one is no longer physically able to outpace defenders, or when your reaction time increases. As you get older, you'll noticed that your reflexes get slower, if even by micro seconds. Players like Gullit, Matthaus or event Giggs, who were potent attacking threats in their prime, dropped further back as age caught on.
Rodger's system insists that players make quick, short passes which isn't a strong part of Stevie's game. He is always looking for the killer, incisive pass and he prefers to run with the ball. He simply is not going to be afforded that amount of time up front. Yesterday, he was once step behind each time he was played a short pass. He often took too long and lost possession or he was forced into turning the ball over. Until Lucas returns, Gerrard should fall back, adopting a role Xabi Alonso used to for us, allowing Allen to move further up the pitch.
Very true, also what sets Stevie apart from Sahin and Allen is his physicality. We saw how both Sahin and Allen were easily outmuscled by Diaby. Stevie's tackles aren't bad either. Great players always have to adapt as they age, Scholes & Giggs did that part well.
