Well not sure which is true but there are reports suggesting that sources at both clubs said that Liverpool didn't even submit a bid.

Let's not get all disappointed here, Dempsey ain't world beater and some of our fans' desperation for him shows how low we have fallen. Maybe BR felt that 6m for a 29yo isn't worth it? Would signing Clint have automatically propelled us back to top 4? No. Were you people really thinking that BR is a miracle worker? If he felt that this is not the signing we need then wouldn't it be better to save those funds for the future when there might be better options out there.

makes good sense. signing dempsey will be the same case as signing downing.

but still cant ignore the fact that we need another striker. dont tell me we have to make do with the yesil kid for half a season  sad.gif
*
Yup and I guess Morgan too even though I feel he isn't quite ready. We are indeed desperate for a striker but it doesn't mean we should spend blindly too so yeah January window maybe? I would rather have BR continue scouting for bargains.

Not having the money to buy and unwilling to spend the money on something are 2 different things, we may never know what went on behind the scenes but ESPN sources said that there weren't any bids from us for Dempsey so its probably true we weren't even interested so stop blaming FSG. They sanctioned big ass transfer fees last season and they still spent quite a bit this summer, we are not Chelsea/City and this is not fantasy football! I believe the only target BR had eyes on was Sturridge but since Chelsea couldn't get Schurrle in, we didn't get our man too.

Missing out on Dempsey might not be that bad at all. Yes we need help upfront but maybe BR has his sight on some better targets he has plans for in the future. The main objective this summer was to trim wage bill and we've done that. It's a long term project BR is working on, stop being so short-sighted, even with Dempsey on board it wouldn't guarantee us a top 6 finish. He is no Messi and he is 29 this year, what future?!

Anyone read that Rafa wanted to sign Falcao for 3m but "you know who" didn't wanna provide the funds and he went to Porto instead? How sad.

Yea agree.. But the problem is, duno they need take how long to adapt with BR system. With the squad you stated above, yes I'm pretty sure we could hold and control the possession on field, yet are we really can bang the goal? I duno but I'm really exciting the match vs Arsenal. Wohoo!
*
And yet signing Dempsey or any other players linked with us for that matter won't guarantee us banging in goals either. IF BR did sign Dempsey and he's not scoring goals, Captain Hindsight fans will come criticizing BR saying he should've gotten us a creative player. Whatever it is, so much damage has been done in our last few regimes BR will need time to plug those holes step by step and we will be bound to mid table mediocrity for a couple more seasons.

Nah i agree. Truth is we did pretty well this window. We've managed to get Sahin, Allen, Assaidi and Yesil. On top of that, we extended Suarez and Skrtel contracts, and did well to rebuff City's approach for Agger. Pity we couldnt end the window with a bang but Rodger should be happy having gotten decent amount of players in.
*
I agree. Good midfielders are essential for passing play to work. Maybe BR is focusing on midfield department first then maybe forwards next summer. Rafa too did not build his team in 1 transfer window.

does Andy's loan deal have an option for us to recall when needed?
*
Don't think so. There is a buyout clause inserted and I believe West Ham paid a certain amount of loan fee. It doesn't make sense to pay if we can recall whenever we wish to so...

QUOTE(hyperyouth_firepower @ Sep 1 2012, 03:20 PM)
the blame is with FSG.

BR came in at first and said "well we don't have to sell anyone".

Out goes Adam, Kuyt, Maxi, and the list...
In April Tom Werner and Ian Ayre said "We HAVE the resources to compete with the very best in the world". That was RIGHT before KD got the sack.
Now? Can't even cough up an extra 2M for Dempsey.
And Stadium. Oh my blooody #$%^&*( can't they just do it one friggin' miniature section at a time, if they're to upgrade it?
*
"Dempsey, who had declared himself unavailable to play for Fulham this season, had turned down a move to Aston Villa earlier on Friday. Liverpool were later reported to have failed with an offer, although ESPN had been informed that was not the case."

It might be true or it might just be the media. It is unless you were directly involved in Liverpool's transfer dealings or we may never know. But apart from Dempsey, Borini 10m, Allen 15m, Assaidi 2.5m, Yesil 1m, Sahin reported loan fee of 4m, that's over 30m which as bad as suggested.

It is known that we have a substantially high wage bill with a bunch of underperforming players, I don't see anything wrong with clearing some deadwoods. Both Maxi and Bellamy wanted to return to their hometown clubs. Aurelio released due to poor injury records. Aquilani was pretty much unwanted by every manager since Rafa. Adam failed to impress and now that we are loaded in midfield it makes sense to sell him. Kuyt left because he was unhappy of not playing regularly last season and part of him wants to take on a new challenge. Whilst Carroll wants to stay with us he also wants to play regularly to reignite his form which we can't guarantee, maybe trimming his fat wage was a consideration there. Carroll is the only one who I think shouldn't have gone out.

With FFP coming you can't expect FSG to spend like City and Chelsea can you? If it was true that we offered up to 4-5m for a season loan for Sahin and 70-80% of his wage then that alone is a pretty significant investment to be honest. Why not blame the previous regime for wasting all that money when we had them instead of asking for more money when our investment failed to bear fruits. And for those calling for youngsters to be given a chance, this is it?

Probably why BR insists on selling him. Some players just wouldn't be as effective if they weren't made the focal point of their attack. Even a player of Torres' quality struggled at Chelsea.

QUOTE(led_zep_freak @ Sep 2 2012, 01:42 PM)
Didn't we try to sign him some weeks ago? FSG got ahead of themselves and announced the signing before it happen, didn't they?
Secondly, if we weren't seriously looking for strikers, then why did we send Carroll out on loan? Bear in mind that other than Dempsey and Sturridge, we weren't link with anybody on the last day. So if they aren't our primary targets, who was supposed to take Carroll's place?

My point is, somebody behind the doors clearly f***ed this up badly and once again we're at risk of facing another PR turmoil.
*
BR did say that they made an enquiry long ago and Fulham said no bid came in so its obvious we don't think the asking price is worth it. Our lack of interest till the end of the window is evident of our lack of interest and that he is not our main target. I believe our main target is Sturridge but since Chelsea couldn't get someone in too, the deal felled through.

For all the people pointing that we were 1-2m away from signing Dempsey, some even quoted a precise 1m. Seriously? You work for the club? You were directly involved in the deal? Don't judge if you don't know the truth. It could have been more or as ESPN quoted we didn't even make a bid! Or Fulham waited till the last minute when Spurs came in then they chose to close all negotiations with us due to grudge because they knew Dempsey was desperate to get out and Spurs is his final option.

Too static in the final 3rd. Often when players are making forward and diagonal runs, the person in midfield with the ball just stands and looks till someone closes him down and he passes it back. Just wasting time and ball. Notice how most players look so lost in the opposition half? We can only pass when no ones around, when someone closes in on them, they can't do shit.

Well at least we know if we continue to play like that for the rest of the season, Sahin most definitely won't be staying. And we can kiss Sterling & Allen goodbye because those 2 definitely deserve better teammates than what they have now.

carroll was only allowed to leave for loan when BR is confident we will get sturridge or/and dempsey...however since chelsea cant get Schurrle, sturridge is staying...and we only bid 4m for dempsey when spurs bid 6m..

btw, i tought carroll is only loaned out for a year...we can always recall him back whenever we want since he is still our player. he will only become whu player if whu pays the agreed fee next season...am i right?
*
Nope, the recalling clause usually only applies for younger players when you send him out on loan for experience for free and maybe the loaning club paying wages only. Carroll's loan involves a loan fee so it wouldn't make sense for that clause to be inserted. If you lease out a property at a fee will the other person be willing to accept the fact that you can recall at any time? If I borrow you a pen for 10 bux for 10 days but I recall it on day 2, does it make sense?

QUOTE(dillonyong @ Sep 3 2012, 01:25 PM)
If we are gonna talk about mistakes, we go a long way back. Back in Gerard Houllier's days, we were aiming for the up and coming Ronaldinho in 2001, before even the world know who heck he is. We were reluctant to pay $15 million to PSG. Then we refuse to pay $10.5 million to Sporting Lisbon to Cristiano Ronaldo in 2002 thinking it was too much. Then Samuel Eto'o actually begged GH to sign him instead of trying to land Djibril Cisse. I still remember the article "I am not as handsome as David Beckham but I am a better footballer than him". And Nicolas Anelka was actually settling down in Liverpool although on loan. We ended up getting Sinama Pongolle, Anthony Le Tallec, El-Hadji Diouf, Salif Diao and Bruno Cheyrou (future Zidane).

Then in 2006, Benitez thought Sergio Aguerro is a big risk and not worth the money and went on to sign Fernando Morientes.

Sigh... if those players have graced the Red shirt, wonder if we still be waiting for our 19th.
*
Oh oh and then there's signing Dirk Kuyt instead of Dani Alves, yes Kuyt has been a loyal servant but Alves is in my opinion the best wing back out there and that was when he was at his peak. And then H&G's refusal to grant Rafa funds for Jovetic. Perhaps signing Downing instead of Mata was there up for grabs.

If you think Houllier's days were a long way back, it goes even further back tongue.gif The legendary Michael Laudrup was due to sign for Liverpool in 1983 on a 3 year contract, but Liverpool at the last minute changed the contract to 4 years and Michael decided not to join and joined Juventus instead.

It's blunders like these that made us where we are today. At an era of globalization where all the big clubs and big club wannabes are cashing in on marketing potential, we were sitting back taking a chill pill basking ourselves in our long but diminishing glory.

My thoughts exactly on Gerrard. I've always seen him dropping further back as age catches on. It's a natural progression as one is no longer physically able to outpace defenders, or when your reaction time increases. As you get older, you'll noticed that your reflexes get slower, if even by micro seconds. Players like Gullit, Matthaus or event Giggs, who were potent attacking threats in their prime, dropped further back as age caught on.

Rodger's system insists that players make quick, short passes which isn't a strong part of Stevie's game. He is always looking for the killer, incisive pass and he prefers to run with the ball. He simply is not going to be afforded that amount of time up front. Yesterday, he was once step behind each time he was played a short pass. He often took too long and lost possession or he was forced into turning the ball over. Until Lucas returns, Gerrard should fall back, adopting a role Xabi Alonso used to for us, allowing Allen to move further up the pitch.
*
Very true, also what sets Stevie apart from Sahin and Allen is his physicality. We saw how both Sahin and Allen were easily outmuscled by Diaby. Stevie's tackles aren't bad either. Great players always have to adapt as they age, Scholes & Giggs did that part well.

Past is passed. What for keep emphasizing how we missed out those players? It could be tat we signed them and they flopped as well....

It also could be the case that we signed some relatively decent player that turned out great for us... Eg, Bellamy, Riera, Arbeloa....
*
Yup no matter how bleak the future looks we gotta look forward and hope for the best. This time around Allen is looking like a great signing while Borini is the opposite. Hit and miss biggrin.gif

Hi there,
Have you taken into consideration the wages that the players would command?
Can't say I know a whole lot about that, but I read somewhere that Aguero's wages far exceeds Carroll's.

Would appreciate it if you could shed some light on this issue, thanks bro. smile.gif
*
Yup that is true but at least u are paying more for something in return rather than paying half that amount for nothing in return. Aguero's wage of lets say 160k is worth it considering he won City the title while Carroll's 80k got us an 8th place finish. If finishing 8th is what I wanted I could've gotten another player for far cheaper than 35m and 80k per week.

If we cant attract top players as what you said, then we still shouldnt pissed away the money for 2nd rated crap out of desperation. Caroll for 35m and Downing for 20m? What were we thinking?
*
Have to agree with that. It is as if we can no longer attract top players so we are trying to pretend to still be a big club by paying big money big wages for sub-par players to create the impression that we are signing top players.

Doubt Owen is the one we need. He no longer has that pace to get past defenders when he was scoring for fun for us. If you want him to score you will need to put it on the plate for him, clear cut opportunities right in front of the goal with only the goalie to beat. He offers nothing constructive to our overall play.

Drogba on the other hand is a dominating presence, he can both score and create. Unlike Carroll, Drogba knows how to make use of skill, off the ball movement and a little pace on the ball. He can still be good without the need of players pumping the ball to him. But his super high wages might be a big obstacle. I doubt he would sign for us for significantly less pay and for all his love for Chelsea.

Yea agree. I don't think Owen is the want we need anymore although he is what we NEED now. Perhaps, appoint him as striker coach? Just a thought for me.

Drogba, yes agree again unless LFC can really pay an attrative wages, otherwise I don't think he will join us just becase wanna "help" us. If not he also won't go China la right? lol

BTW, why BR still didn't use Yesil, the german kid? I was read feel articles fr different sites like goal.com, soccernet, ppl rate him (compliment him) as NEXT  DROGBA?
*
Yeah that makes more sense. Maybe he can teach Suarez and Borini the art of scoring.

QUOTE(solstice818 @ Sep 3 2012, 04:40 PM)
But a summer window which brought in three young, but significantly talented starters in Joe Allen, Nuri Sahin and Fabio Borini as well as two exciting young potential stars of the future - Samed Yesil and Oussama Assaidi - could hardly be deemed a failure as we build for the future.

In Brendan Rodgers we have a talented young manager and we have valued highly his judgement about the make-up of the squad. This is a work in progress. It will take time for Brendan to instill his philosophy into the squad and build exactly what he needs for the long term.

We have been successful in improving the commercial side of the club and the monies generated going forward will give us greater spending power in the coming years.

We are still in the process of reversing the errors of previous regimes. It will not happen overnight. It has been compounded by our own mistakes in a difficult first two years of ownership. It has been a harsh education, but make no mistake, the club is healthier today than when we took over.

Spending is not merely about buying talent. Our ambitions do not lie in cementing a mid-table place with expensive, short-term quick fixes that will only contribute for a couple of years.

There will be short-term setbacks from time to time, but we believe we have the right people in place to bring more glory to Anfield.

Lots of good points there. Some fans are just too quick to turn their back of managers and owners. rclxms.gif
