Go out, print small design profile of yours.
Search any company you think you can improve their visual design. Find their HQ phone and address.
Approach with thick skin, if you got shut in-front of the door.

Move on.... Look for other one.

I think it's all on individual which path they want to be..
Me personally, I can't see myself entering office staring at the computer, going to pantry fill-up my teabag and then sitting down wait for assignment to come it from the boss or leader of the division and stay 9am-5pm or 10am-6pm anymore.

So I took the other path and give it a try...
At first, not that fun because reality suddenly hits you when you get shut or your feeling got play.
For example, manage to had meeting with them. On the way to the office and suddenly cancel for no reason or having long conversation with them and 2 hours later they shows no interest on your business.

The feeling you left the office sometimes can snap you like in Korean Drama.. haha

I'm getting used to it already and able to read their mind..

Do you have a registered company or corporate partner?

You dont always seek success on the 1st try, meeting them is an opportunity, to service them you have to know their mind, what they want.

i actually went on an interview for a job offer that i am not interested, having a conversation with corporate leader are brilliant, how they think, how far they see and what they aim.

not unexpected. 2-3 years experience and still under 35. probably cause under 35 would be unmarried and non managerial level. and besides, come out to work at 22, should have at least 13 years experience if you are 35 already kan.. why would u look for a job like that?

Wow. That's not bad - both employment and side business.

If you don't mind me asking..

1. Is it a big organization (more than 30 staff) ?

2. What side business are you doing ? brows.gif

If you are good designer you can earn good money easy. It depends on your experience and skills. Also you can deal with all web promotion operation for all kind of web sites on the Internet. it's very modern filed in industry which can bring you good salary. For example I work with this company "Optimism" and can admit that thay are really good specialists.

Maybe you could share us some of your experience. How good a designer is with a fix peanut salary won't help either.

GREAT TOPIC! learnt lots from this topic!

QUOTE(pinkyd @ Aug 16 2012, 09:23 AM)
Thank you for sharing ur salary so at least we know that they are designers that get paid well!..

After I have graduated, I realize that they are 2 type of companies a designer can work in. Design Studio / ad agency / print house or Corporate Companies. I believe all the designers posted above are in a In-house dept of a corporate companies. That is why they manage to get high pay.. smile.gif

1. Design Studio / Ad agency / Print House
- The starting salary for a fresh grad usually starts below 2k. If your portfolio and skills are really good it can reach mora than 2k. The main focus of the company is producing design / ideas or any multimedia service. Your job is focus on just design. Working hours are like crazy.. Low benefits. But work environment is fun, creative with no dresscode.

2. Corporate Companies / Government Agencies : eg. Sime Darby, Bank Negara, Mampu, MPOB...
This companies usually have an in-house design department and just one or two position for a designer. The salaries can start between 2.5k - 4k for a fresh grad with many other benefits. You are paid high... But as a creative, working in a corporate environment with strict dresscode and guidelines may not be that fun. You will be the ONLY designer in the organization so you are expected to knoww everything and you have to do print + web + video all by yourself. Plus, if you are an executive.. you have to do other work like doing presentations, preparing budget,  and many other boring non-design related jobs. To get in this organizations also need just more than design skills. Employers will look at your pointer : CGPA 3.00 and above, also your interpersonal and communications skills which many designers are lack of.

So its either work in a fun design studio where you can explore creative juices with low pay or in a strict corporate environment with high pay?

Job Title : Graphic Designer, FA Artist
Location : PJ
Years spent in company : 1 year +
Company : Media House
Industry : Media
Tenure : Permanent
Employment Level : Executive
Experience before joining : 6month
Salary : RM 2.2k (and i heard there's no increment for this year. Office no money. And i am rage.)

Juz to share my experience. I got 2 interview with the creative agency last week. I got a lot of advise from the interview. They said, If you're young(20++), you better get ur ass in the creative agency. Yes, the pay is not high as you expected, but you will learn a lot from agency. You will improve your skill, your detail in design and everything. And trust me, only from the agency you can achieve higher level either as AD, CD and so on. They told me they interview one graphic designer which already have 5 years experience working at Printing House/Production before. They pity him because at that age (30++), no improvement on his portfolio. Because as a designer, your exposure is very limited if you're stuck in Medai House/Printing House.

I know this is true because I'm working at Media House currently. And yes, I do see that my design is not improve a lot. Media/Printing House is a very comfort zone for designer. No stress, so urgent deadline, no staying up late and so on. But, when you already spent lets say 2-3years there, then you started to find a new job. Trust me, it's hard to get the job title as 'Senior Graphic Designer' with your current portfolio. So, now i'm thinking to make a move since im still young, 25 yo. Haha.  wink.gif
