Guys, any tips for drawing realistic faces?

I can draw anime style faces, but I failed miserably at realistic faces. I been trying to draw my friend for ages, but I just can't seem make it resemble the person or realistic enough. Facing troubles especially at the eye and mouth and the overall shading I should use.

I need to reach a level where other people can see the picture and recognize the person I am drawing.

My skill levels is lower than the quoted Adamiquesce picture above.

I look at some tutorials, but none seem to help me at drawing better.

More info - I draw with purely pencil and paper, I don't use photoshop or anything to touch up.

The best tips I can give u is, just draw what u see.

One of the crucial basic in realistic painting for me is the tones, u get that right, u can make your drawing looks believable. Then comes the detailing, detailing is fun, thats when your drawing comes alive. Of course, everything fails if u dont get the primary sketch right, I mean the shapes.

I know this doesnt help much, and I dont know your exact problem, but if u got any question just ask. icon_rolleyes.gif

practice and more practice
various pencil thickness; B, 2B, HB, H, etc...

I also want to get some opinion.
Master seba, please do help.

I think I am still getting the primary sketch wrong. And my tones is still very bad.

Do you mind if I PM you my sketch and the photo I am trying to sketch?

I think it would be alot better if u post it here in the thread just to get it going. Plus the discussion would probably help others in the future. U dont necessarily need to post your sketch and your reference photo, u can also explain to me which part u are having problem. smile.gif

Interesting... Will give it a shot, although I'm an illustrator, not a fine artist XD

Looking at the "BEST OF DIGITAL ART", I have already thought this is not my game, honestly I'm hardly impressed by fine arts, maybe it is not technically superior to illustration type of arts or concept arts, no real skills involved.

I mean look at that, just give people the impression that you intended something deep (although you just flying about your brush thoughtless) and you are good to go! rclxms.gif

idk if this fits here, just my mural work done during form 3 in secondary school some 15 years ago, not sure if still there. the mural is in front of school library and it's meant for program nilam to encourage students spend more of their time reading.

my friend said the colors look dirty, some mistaken the mural for a beach. it's actually a sea bottom with water caustics in the background. students will submit their drawing of marine creatures and paste it on the mural. that's why most of the space is empty.

thanks for viewing btw.

thanks for the compliments. mural painting is actually quite flexible, it's easier to mix than water colors.

At 15 years old I still stuck with drawing manga style and copy Naruto stuff using pencil. sweat.gif

Hm, I've always had interest in art, but I never practised it during my school years. Like, maybe 1-2 drawings a year? Definitely didn't draw ANYTHING during my SPM/STPM years.

It wasn't until I was around 20-ish, when I have a steady job AND a lot of free time, then I started drawing just to not get bored.

And I'm a competitive perfectionist, so when I do something, I make sure I'm always improving/growing in some way laugh.gif

Haha very opposite to mine, I draw alot as a kid and teen, but pre-SPM onwards, I rarely draw, this year for example, I only managed to complete 1 proper drawing so far.

That's actually a great approach, discipline. hmm.gif

By the way, how about discussion about sketching strokes.

https://www.facebook.com/kr0npr1nz/photos/a...?type=1&theater

How do u guys do your strokes? I always find my sketches very messy because my strokes are fast and short, and I add a lot more lines when I do mistakes, maybe I need to change my habit, I wonder how these guys sketch look really good, alot of practice or just talent?

My strokes lagi messy.
I bodoh lighting, cannot properly imagine and shade my sketches, even more I messed up every time I ink my drawings.

Oh, and thanks for the links.

U dont need to care for lighting in sketches, just lines.

No problem bro, sharing the inspiration and great artists!

Thats what intriguing me, some people sketch so decently, they use slow and steady strokes and it looks so good, I think this is where all the practices make a difference, or talent.

Just like Kim Junggi, if u watch his live drawing, mistakes are almost non existent, he just let his pen dance, I wonder how he can even do that? Did he just pre-estimate the sketch on his mind and map it on the canvas. It is done so effortlessly, the details too.

Now that I have grasped the foundation of my style, but it still lack the 'punch' that it need to make it more eye catching. It would be too long if I go find it on my own. The only thing I could do now is improving the background to make it bolder and complement the orb to the subject, but I have no idea how to do it. sad.gif
*
If you ask me, I'm also a bit weak and inexperienced in concept, but theoretically, something eye-catching would be usage of vibrant colors, something bold and strong but not excessive in that sense. You can also try to bring on the subject more by giving it more dimension, put it in it's place, add more dynamics and style.

Of course I was just subjectively speaking, I am leaving it all to your imagination. smile.gif

Depends on the theme u are going for, from what I see from the illustration, the most effective thing to do is you need to add more impact into it, i.e Explosion of colors, contrasts and whatnot, monotonous palette will make it very boring to see. nod.gif

Explosion of colors, contrast is still a bit hard for ma to fathom lol. All I can do is google around and make reference from it. Anyway, still a good advice and I really appreciate it.  notworthy.gif
Love the calming, cute and happy family drawing.  wub.gif

Haha sorry about that, I always type out things like that, generally.

Oh well, let me share with you what is "godlike" in my book, and these are the epitome of the terms I used earlier.

These would be DYNAMICS.
