this may sound stupid, but is it related to network connection issue?
D3 requires full time online connection, unlike other games can play solo offline.
maybe something hogging your network bandwidth like p2p or pps.tv?

i don't think network issues will cause fps lag...

if it drops on your every 1st battle once u start diablo 3...it's normal...
if it persist after a few battles...then it's a problem and try to turn off all nt so important applications/software....
if still not working smoothly, then sorry to tell u i dunno how to fix it...can try to see got any solution on the b.net forum...good luck smile.gif

Try this.

While the following isn't guaranteed to resolve all stutter symptoms on all systems, we have seen significant improvements on several computers using this method. This workaround involves partially disabling Windows Drive Indexing, a tool that speeds up Windows searches.

Disable Drive Indexing

1. Click Start
2. Click Computer*
3. Right Click your Hard Drive (typically C:) and select Properties
4. Select the General tab
5. Uncheck Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed...**
6. Click Apply
7. Select Apply changes to drive C:\ only
8. Click Ok, and then Ok again
9. Load up Diablo III and see if your performance has improved!

* = My Computer on Windows XP
** = Allow Indexing Service to index... on Windows XP

Turning off indexing to the "drive only" will still enable your Windows' searches to be quick. If you still have stuttering after this workaround, you may wish to experiment with turning off indexing to subfolders and files as well. Once you've turned indexing off for everything, the option will change to one that lets you re-enable it if need be.

In the meanwhile, I'll pass this information on to the devs so that hopefully more changes can be made on our end to reduce stuttering. Thank you!

if you can get your HDD I/O benchmark/logging done, you will have your definitive answer and can work from there smile.gif

please do not do that as some driver/graphic card will get stressed out trying to achieve max fps, gets over heated, auto throttling and you actually get shit fps.

in case you haven't heard... there is a bug causing fps to drop badly when you had the fps limit enabled. whistling.gif

search the blizzard bug forum...

my point is still valid though, and i have never encounter fps drop badly when having fps limited for 1 of my PC and 2 of my laptops (1 laptop being sis, another sis playing on my laptop)

that's 3 machines in total mind you.

not limiting it on the other hand, let's just say it isnt the friendliest thing to majority of notebooks and it probably won't be very "lap"top friendly

this is the bug.
if it is an issue, use 3rd party software to limit fps, or have vsync to limit it to 60.

tldr:
- you will need limitations on fps so your graphic card doesnt stresses itself up pumping frames you may not need
- if your fps below the limit anyways and you still suffer from low fps despite having everything low with the d3prefs modification, it's just your machine not meeting requirements

yea trying to track if i have any background service running. any tool to recommend or windows task manager good enuf? lol
yea i get sudden spike, sometimes for like 5 seconds . i see my msi afterburner fps counter drop below 10
i felt it more in D3 ... i can play new CoD games with almost max settings and i rarely get such spike. i cant imagine D3 being more taxing than those FPS. im not even playing D3 at max .... i get spikes even when i set to everything lowest ...
*
you should know COD still use the same engine for years since 2007 CoD 4 MW1 until black op 2

how can u expect any lag with the old engine game that even a 3000 series AMD runs it like fly

D3 graphic slightly heavier than CoD, and i think something is wrong with ur pc build other than ur graphic card

ur graphic card is very good enough, but u still suffer lag on D3

another thing is D3 is really quite buggy, even high end extreme pc still suffer terrible lags sometime, not always

did u run temp check? sometime temp may become issue of lag. check if any prog running at back and turn it off. turning off ur antivirus is one of good step, it appear antivirus / firewall may raise lag depend on what setting u setup. smile.gif

did some analysis. it appears that the HDD read spike correlates with my stuttering issue. perhaps i will give the 16gb thumbs trick a try.

If this is an I/O issue of the HDD, you may also want to check for other possible HDD issue and file system related issue. These stuff slow down your PC also.

I am using a regular HDD also, and so far is only getting very minor lag spikes when i first connect into the game. It last anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute at most.
